I run 6 engines in 1 gui. A single engine never understands all positions well.
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) Date 2012-06-15 17:44
No matter what they say you can run single core engines on HT. I run 12 engines on my 6 core and 8 remotes on my 920 and have no problems. Just my opinion.
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2012-06-15 18:40
It's perfectly valid to run 2N single core engines on an N core cpu with HT to pick up a 30% gain. It doesn't make sense when you are running multi-threaded because you lose about the same amount from parallel inefficiency as you gain from HT, so it just takes more energy for nothing.
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 00:24
Really?????, I thought HT are not real so we cant run it ???
So on i73770K  can run 12 single cores without performance loss ?
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 00:32
not Om

you can run 12 single cores,BUT with performance loss

Houdart stated at his page that is much better 4 cores running at 2 Gz,than 8 cores (usint hyperthreading) at 1,2 Gz,even if the latest option gives a better kn/s (8000 against 8800),because with chess engines arent good to run hypherthreading
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 00:38
You are comparing that Robert stated is Houdini MP with HT and without HT. We are talking about in single core engines not MP.
Parent - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 00:51
well,you are right

in your scenario,i dont know what you say...
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2012-06-16 06:27
Here's the math:

- If you are running 12 single core engines, HT will give you a speedup of ~30%.
- Your processor will use ~30% more energy and run hotter.
- You probably will have to dial back your overclock.

So at the end of the day, maybe you will get 10-15% improvement from using HT.

Thanks. But I am not going to Overclock. I am going to run it in default clock mode.
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) Date 2012-06-16 13:42
That's what I do for IDEA and it works fine. I have 20 single cores working on my projects. I have 1 i7-980 and 1 i7-920, local networked and use the 980 as the master.
Parent - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 15:13
Wow. If I buy another PC, I need just one monitor and can attach the two desktops ? Just like cluster ?
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-15 01:28
I cannot recommend AMD. I have very little knowledge of their processors and how well they work in chess analysis. I do have every confidence in Intel.
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-15 01:51
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-15 02:00
I'm not sure AMD is at all good for chess. But others might have more to say on that from a better vantage point. They seem to be decent chips for gaming but beyond that for chess I'm in the dark. Because of their architecture I haven't heard encouraging things.
Parent - - By Chaotic Chess (****) Date 2012-06-15 05:25 Edited 2012-06-15 06:08
AMD only wins in price/performance ratio. Intel wins in performance without doubt clock by clock.

Is I7 3930X a good buy?
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-15 06:03
I'm happy with it. Although, it is very hard to o/c. I finally, received a solid board from ASUS-one board had a bad memory slot and the other a bad bios. I haven't tried to o/c this board yet.

Little disappointed that the GUI's will not  report the over clocked  core speeds accurately.

I was o/c at 4841  MHz and both Fritz and Aquarium reported the core speed at 3.30 GHz.

Hi, Robert.
Due to Windows 7 problem I installed windows xp 64 bit pro i a partotion.
From today morning It is crashing and I am seeing Blue screen after boot in XP.
But interestingly windows seven is not crashing and booting normally.
Until now I have tried 9 times and it has crashed giving a BSOD.
Every alternate time its easily booting to Windows 7. And its showing a  windows error report of crashing.

Later I found that XP cant use Hybrid Cross fire X but windows 7. Is It the Issue ? Grafix card ?

How are you managing your games now? Send your system in repair shop within one day it will be fixed, though you need to pay for the parts which will be replaced.
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 09:46
I am confused. But its not one day. They will keep it for month atleast. I am doomed in WBCCC2012 :=(
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-16 16:54
What I would do is only buy hardware... that  can be of  use in a NEWER  MOTHERBOARD.

I would not sink any more money into this old machine -  it might well  turns out that the motherboards  hardware gone south of goats cheese ( or it might not! )  - but that is the risk you are taking when you  decide to sink  more money into an older computer.
Parent - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 17:40
Then what should I do ?
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-16 16:39
I'm not familiar with your graphics card - apparently it is an older card correct?  The only way you would be able to check is to swop out this card and throw in another and see if it makes a difference. That was the first recommendation EVGA had for me when I complained that their new card was defective. I was getting display driver issues and only blue screen when it finally died. Blue screens could be caused by any number of issues.
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-16 17:38
It is ATI Radeon HD 5450.
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-16 17:42

Supports 64 bit.

Back off on the CPU overclock and see if that stabilizes the situation
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-15 13:45
I haven't Overclocked.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-19 01:24
take a look at the speed of my processor...

i dont know what happens;core temp works wrong,or the speed of my processor goes up and down alternatibely...now seems normalized, but a few moments ago, core temp seems was crazy with the speed!!

edit:my clock running at 35,77 Gz :yell:
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-19 03:58 Edited 2012-06-19 04:02
You have intel speed step engaged. If you disable it - you might have to reset your overclocking parameters. Besides, you aren't overclocking that much.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2012-06-19 05:29
What are you talking about? 35.78 GHz is one hell of an overclock! :yell:

You're over worked!

Robert thought i have the hell with satan inside my cpu
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-19 06:32
Robert,in the name of God,how can i oc a 5 years old laptop,core 2 duo,to 35,7Ghz??that is imposssible,even with the newer cpu's

i just pointed that my coretemp program became crazy, showing that ultra high frequency for the cpu

from what i know,my laptop cant be oc,and even if i can,i wont do it,the temp sometimes is 83 degress and the limit is 90!
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-19 13:49
Whats your problem-high temps ! Get a chair. Put it in front of your refrigerator and open the door -pull out one of the shelf , and put your laptop on it, and wala -have a beer and tap away! Have some left overs while you're at it.
Parent - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-19 18:01
