I have been facing numerous hardware problems in my PC. Don't know where to start with.
There is Ram Issue but dont know which ram. Arrire Pennisse  suggested to run memtest and found nothing.
Now If i run engines on 6 cores they are showing not more than 60 kn/s specially Houdini Critter and Stockfish Official.
But if i run then in 5 cores Houdini shows 10000 kn/s, Critter 6000 kn/s.

But Deep Rybka 4.1 runs as usual.

What should I do ?
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 15:49
run just in 5 cores until the round will end,and after that, try to know what happens with your computer Om
Parent - - By Chaotic Chess (****) Date 2012-06-11 15:58
Defective cores
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 16:07
Really ? This happens in All gui now.
Parent - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 19:58
i had 2 core 2 duo;the one that i have now,and other that was broke about 2 years ago;that latest, and being the same laptop, analized aprox at the half of the speed that the other laptop, being identical laptops

i ran a test, and the test showed me that all was ok,including cpu,but when i ran an engine,it reach half of kn/s
Parent - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 19:56
agree

but until he can solve the problem,at leats he will be able to play the WBCCC 2 with his computer with a good speed

Have you tried going into task manager and:
1) seeing if anything else is taking CPU?   If you had a rogue task that was gobbling CPU you might getting these symptoms
2) seeing what the graphs show about each core?
Male sure you show the tasks for all users.

By the way, why do you think there is a RAM issue?

I ran game booster before running all these.

>By the way, why do you think there is a RAM issue?

Mouse freezes randomly.

>I ran game booster before running all these.

That will remove some unnecessary process but does not guarantee all of them are removed.   There is no substitute for checking directly.

>Mouse freezes randomly.

In my experience that is not the normal symptom of faultly memory.   Faulty memory most often causes program crashes or even system crashes.  In fact I can't recall faulty memory ever having caused a freezing mouse.

BTW, if those are your temperatures while your machine is running flat out then they are aboslutely fine, in fact impressviely low.   If they are when the PC is not under significant load then they tell you nothing useful.

Check your CPU temperature. To prevent overheating there is a built-in "thermal throttling" mechanism which slows down the cores until the temperature goes back into safe range.
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 23:49
Are these temp ok ?
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 23:52
seems good and normal temp Om
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-11 23:56
As per AMD site max is 62 degrees. I get max 63 If run Houdini.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 00:02
the max is 62,and you get 63 running Houdini?...you are going to fry the cpu Om

disable one core and run only 5 cores until you know what happens to your computer
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 00:36
TJ max is 90 degrees.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 00:45
my laptop is also 90,and i cant do more than run it,since i havent another computer...and now, summer,i must select the option to only work at 75 % of the cpu power, and even that,my temp now is 64 degrees...if i dont set to use the 75 %,and i use the full 100 %mthe temp is 83 degrees...

look the capture, the max is about 2 hours ago,now i reduced to 75 %,and even that, look for the actual temp Om
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 01:11
Its too Hot salva. Soon gonna be omelete from dinosaur egg. Use a coolling pad Salva.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 01:17 Edited 2012-06-12 01:19
i know is too hot Om,but what can i do?nothing...

im also using a cooling, and i put the laptop over the cooling, and i also left the plastic of the backward of the laptop,so the cpu, hard drive, etc so all the hardware is in front my eyes,to make is less hot,but nothing happens;even with that, look to the temp Om

i must sent to repair the laptop because it crashed when i was playing round 2 of the WBCCC 2,and all (people working, hard drive,etc...) i must pay 100 euros,to have running again, and with that temp...

maybe for a lot of people 100 euros arent a lot,or buy a new laptop, but for me,is the entire world

Money is the only constraint in my life. feel like I sud go for smuggling for few days or meet Bill Gates.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 02:20
we can go to kidnap Bill Gates,Om

would you?

just jocking...i can pay the plane ticket to go tu USA
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 02:32
And I will pay the return
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-12 02:40
so all the problems solved!

now we only need a good and well armed arsenal, bypass the security measures, kidnap him, rent a plane, avoid the interpool, and a big bag to have his money

someone interested to join our dream?

I am running all engines on 68degrees.
And it is working fine.
Parent - - By mindbreaker (****) Date 2012-06-12 23:03 Edited 2012-06-12 23:21
Have you tried opening the side panel and just running a regular fan on everything.  I put it on high and use a dimmer cord to control the level of flow and keep the sound in check.  I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-Innovators-Comfort-Performance-Pivoting/dp/B000NNH9LW/ref=sr_1_16?s=appliances&ie=UTF8&qid=1339541899&sr=1-16

Not sure what happened to the price.  I think mine was $60. These centrifugal types make less noise relative to the amount of flow and are easily directable.  I am sure there is something reasonable.

It is a hot day here. My processor temperatures are usually about 4 degrees cooler.  Computer is at 100% CPU and has been for 3 days.  Running Critter (10,000-11,000kn/s).

Hi I want to buy AMD FX 8 coes setup. Plz suggest a rig. Go to flipkart.com and select the parts and tell me. But I am on tight budget.

Thanks in Advance.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:03
Om,i think a 6 intel core is better for chess than 8 amd cores...
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:14
I said Tight budget. i7 3930K costs 36K Only and in that I can make a AMD 8 core system which is not that bad.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:21
well, look at Google, and see if the i7 3930k performs better AT CHESS than the amd 8 cores...because i think will perform wors,at being very lucky, equal
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:25
You are talking about performance and I am talking about Performance/price ratio. For me No of cores matter.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:32
ah,that is different...for the money you have, you can buy the i7 Om?and are you going use the computer for more things than running chess engines?
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:39
That Only chess. This I will use for gaming. I willl have 2 pcs
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:46
ah,ok...that is different Om

but 8 cores to play games...what are you going to run?earthquake simulator?
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:50
8 semi cores for chess.  This 6 real cores for Games.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:54

>8 semi cores for chess.  This 6 real cores for Games.

what means that Om?i dont understand anything
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 00:56
Don't you know about Bulldozer Architecture ?
Its 4 modules having 2 cores each. Not real 8 cores.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 01:03
ah ah ah...that explains a lot...something like hyperthreading?
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 01:23
Yes. But Its real not like HT which is virtual.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 01:27
if it is real, those arent ''semi cores'' like you pointed, are real 8 cores
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 03:13
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 03:30
well,i think taht now i understand what you mean with ''semi cores''

i never will buy an amd...if i can (that at the moment i cant),i will buy a ''normal'' computer for chess analisis/play
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 03:39
AMD is not that bad. Just think what would happen if AMD will not be able to give competition to INTEL ?????
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 03:48
amd for chess is a crap...

>Just think what would happen if AMD will not be able to give competition to INTEL ?????

agree with that point;with competition, the end user is who take the advantage, because if amd doesnt give competition against intel,im sure that intel will go to 'sleep' instead of developing good processors...BUT that is the only ''good thing'' in amd;the competition they give to intel,so intel must develop better cpu's
Parent - - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 04:04

>amd for chess is a crap.

Never. Its a matter of comparison. My AMD 1090T X6 gives 12000 kn/s with Houdini where as Core i7 920 I had that time gave me 10000 kn/s .
Also both had the same price tag with AMD cheaper, and I had 2 extra cores for analysis.
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2012-06-13 09:42
well, maybe you are right...i think you are wrong, but i wouldnt argue, and keeping in mind that we wont arrive to an accord...

Whether you or me Agree or not, Facts are Facts.

>Whether you or me Agree or not, Facts are Facts

totally true my friend
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2012-06-13 23:35
It is my understanding-although, I stand to be corrected-the Intel Core i5 2500K can match in performance the AMD Bulldozer 8150 FX , where in some cases AMD might marginally over take it. But dollar for dollar it is pretty much comparable.
Parent - By Master Om (Bronze) Date 2012-06-14 01:45
Yes, It is. You are correct. But what about IDeA analysis ? Which one will be better ?
Parent - - By mindbreaker (****) Date 2012-06-13 03:43
They are real cores except for a few functions (not relevant for chess). That was not the problem, just a myth.  The real problem is that they lengthened the pipeline with a faulty assumption that the design would clock much faster. It can go faster, but requires far more power and cooling than they thought. On liquid nitrogen it can go very fast.  There was also an issue of Windows making very poor use of the chip.  They really should have worked with Microsoft to fix Windows for owners of the new chips with a simple update or somehow did it themselves.  It is supposed to work better in Windows 8 (max of 10-15% better) but that is not optimized either. I also hear the 16-core chip machines work better with Linux.  Probably true for the 8-core as well, but not enough software is made for Linux in the chess area which is already a small market.  Really pathetic that a company that makes as much as Microsoft making OSes can't make a decent scheduler.  The US government needs to break up Microsoft, Intel, the big banks, big oil, and the media conglomerates (for a start).  Unfortunately, the real progressive movement that broke up trusts and monopolies several decades ago disappeared after they got all the things they wanted. But since then, companies have persuaded lawmakers to weaken or eliminate all these laws.

Still AMD has no one to blame but themselves.  They got a huge antitrust windfall and squandered it on an idiotic design repeating well known mistakes that its competitor made a decade ago.  You just can't lengthen the pipeline and expect a chip to go faster.
