we will excuse Lukas from this as we are talking about us mere mortals.

the people i know now realise the fastest stuff we can have is 5680 or 5690 at 4.2 to run at 24/7.12 core.

The blame is down to EVGA SR-2 motherboard.

The company itself will never acknowledge this as it would be open to liability.

What do we do.

I have seen rigs with phase change coolers achieve some spectacular overclocks on single socket boards. I have not seen anything for dual socket or video cards yet but I would imaging somebody is looking at that.

Keep in mind overclocking for a given CPU will vary from one to another on the wafer. The bins are sorted by how fast they can run, unless they are dumpstered due to defects.

My old AMD X2 4200+ (2.2 GHz) was able to achieve 3.025 MHz and be stable. Unfortunately the hard disk I was using failed followed by a PSU failure. So now that CPU is on the server and my gaming rig is now being modernized.

See my CPU page, its got an interesting video for the roadmap part.

After doing some investigation I think the problem is with the processor bin. Each batch of CPUs (like my 5690s) comes out in batches. Officially these are all equal but in practice one sheet of silicon can be better or worse than the next. The early 5690s were getting to 4.5Ghz with stability, my CPU is a late bin (i.e end of line, almost) and is made from an inferior sheet of silicon. Hence it only goes up to 4.2 Ghz.

this sounds like a wishful thinking explanation and one that builders will give you.Everyone with 5680's seems able to get 4.2,5690's should give you more otherwise what are you paying for.IMHO fault lies in motherboard.

who says and who tested with houdini 24/7.
