What's a ' Centaur ' ?
I played Age of Mythology and it's Expansion and I now continually have to think about the Question-Title.
> What's a ' Centaur ' ?
It may mean a computer assisted by a human to play, or a human assisted by a computer to play, depending on the level of interaction that is happening.
If you have a subscription to "Chess Life," there was a good article on that subject in the 2/11 issue.
I do wonder though, at what time controls are Centaurs better than strong engines by themselves -certainly not at blitz.
Probably hour/game is enough to reach that point, since the Centaur has the ability to Ponder much better than the engine
But even having a successful "ponder hit" on each individual move would only be enough to increase elo by 50 to 70 elo points.
That's assuming equal chess books, but I think if the Centaur played for a win, or got intentionally into a position the opposing engine is bad at or simply into an opening position where the drawing chances are greatly reduced, then the strength addition could easily get to 150 elo.
There is no reason to assume that there would be anything different than the numbers found through a decade of research on the subject. The qualities you mention are what might make the player stronger in general, but this is different from ponder hits. You can't gain more than 50 to 70 elo on ponder hits, and in practice, the true number will be much less (after all the opposing engine will have some ponder hits, too).

Yes, I claim there's more than Ponder Hits in the reason a Centaur would come forward significantly.
If I recall correctly, last Freestyle tournament all unassisted engines were annihilated.
The last Freestyle tournament was a long time ago--we are closer to the draw boundary now. Also, "annihilated" is relative--they simply didn't score as many points in a tournament of approximately equal competition because they weren't as good at getting wins.

I meant the recent ones played at InfinityChess.

Oh well, I guess my 150 estimate refers at matching the entity against a group of opponents and not about the strength increase when face to face. I was not clear in my statement (what with me mentioning factors that only happen on a computer v centaur game), but when I thought "this guy is 150 elo stronger than a unassisted engine" I really had in mind the overall strength (in a rating pool) and not a 1v1 one.
