Up Topic Rybka Support & Discussion / Rybka Discussion / 7... Nc6 practically refuted in the 6. Bg5 Najdorf?

The April's fool joke is on whom?

Last night, there was a game in the Danish Championship going like this:

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Nc6 8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 h6 10. Bh4 g5 11. fxg5 Nd5 12. Ne4 Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 fxg6 15. Qe2

I suspect 15. Qe2 is some kind of a novelty. During the game, some guy said that 15. Qg4 and 15. Qc2 had been investigated in a NIC yearbook (98 and 99 I believe). I checked a batch of playchess games from December 2011, and here, 15. Bf2 had been played convincingly.

I took a look, and the 15. Bf2 move looks very strong. In fact, it seems like the whole 7... Nc6 move is in a huge crisis, at least I could not find any good deviations. I cannot claim with 99.999999% certainty that black is lost after 7... Nc6, but practically speaking, it looks very unattractive for black (if white has access to engines and books :P).

What do you think?

Here is my analysis. At some places, in sub-variations where black is probably certainly lost (from a probabilistic point of view ;-) ), I am sure that refinements can be made; I just made enough analysis to support a conclusion. At any place in the analysis, please share improvements for either side. Please also note, the mainline of the analysis is almost certainly not black's best, but some kind of principled line. The question is, just how inferior a position does black have to accept in order to avoid losing outright after 7... Nc6?

interesting!
what did you conclude finally?
If you concluded that 15. Bf2 move looks very strong, as under:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Nc6 8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 h6 10. Bh4 g5 11. fxg5 Nd5 12. Ne4 Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 fxg6 15. Bf2
instead of...
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Nc6 8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 h6 10. Bh4 g5 11. fxg5 Nd5 12. Ne4 Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 fxg6 15. Qe2

How would you justify it in simple words that I can not figure-out from complex PGN posted?

I am not fond of playing "The Sicilian Defence" quite often as a black. It is my personal observation that the word "Defence" should be dropped from "The Sicilian Defence" coz it really does not provide any strong defence to the black neither higher the chances for black to win. Further more some moves requires acute calculation otherwise black is always ends-up in troublesome situation than white.

I do apologize for my limited knowledge with computer chess.

I think the "tradition" is to call openings for black 'defenses' and openings for white 'attacks'. For example the King's Indian Defense vs. the King's Indian Attack. They may not have these qualities at all.

i agree with you

What is the point in using word "Defence" which can not defend or win at all? ....if it is "Defence", one must not loose at least.
When ever I play The Sicilian Defence and loose, my buddy always tont me what kind of defence really it is? coz the name sounds so big.
What is the point in using word "Attack" that can not be turned into a WIN? ...still "Attack" is OK coz attack may leads either into win or loose.
just being little funny!

I'll just stay away from 14... fxg6, as the white win is almost inevitable while most material is staying on the board.
14... Qe3+ 15. Qe2 Qxe2+ 16. Bxe2 fxg6 17. Nf6+ Kf7 18. O-O takes away queen and g-pawn problem yet white's knight begins slaughtering pawns.
13... Rb8 14. Qd3 dxe5 15. g6 fxg6 16. Bf6 gives white the game
I have nothing for 10... dxe5 or 12... dxe5

One line that you are missing is, and that black could very likely hold is 13... Qxb2 14. Rb1 (14. g6 fxg6 15. Rb1 Qxa2 16. Bf2 dxe5 17. Bd3 Be7) 14... Qxa2

Please take another look at my analysis. I give 13... Qxb2 14. Rb1 Qxa2 15. g6 fxg6 16. Bd3! and I think this is close to lost for Black, the analysis is all there.

I am looking more into the 13... Rb8 lines after your suggestion of 14. Qd3. I can't see that 14. Qd3 wins straight away, but it's interesting.

After 2 days of searching 7... Nc6 is great for black after
8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 h6 (9... dxe5 is lost for black) 10. Bh4 (10. Bxf6 is drawn) g5 (10... dxe5 is lost for black) 11. fxg5 Nd5 (11... Nd7 is lost for black) 12. Ne4 (12. Nxd5 is drawn, 12. Bg3 is drawn)
12... Rb8 13. c4 (all other moves are drawn) Ne3 13. Qd2 d5 14. Nf6 Qxf6 16. gxf6 (16. is drawn) Bb4 17. cxd5 (Rb1 is drawn) cxd5

12... Rb8 Refutes the entire Qb6 mess
12... Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 (13... Qxb2 is very lost for black after 14. g6 fxg6 15. Rb1 Qxa2 16. Bd3 Nf4 17. Nf6 Qf7 18. Bxg6 Kxg6 19. Qg4 Kf7 20. O-O Qxg2 21. Qxg2 Nxg2 22. Kxg2) (13... Qe3 is lost for black) (13... Rb8 doesn't look good so far)
14. g6 (else the game is drawn) fxg6 (else the game is lost for black)
Move 15 holds many lines for white. The only ones that does not begin to become drawish are Bf2, and Qc2. I think black could pull through but I wouldn't what to be against white in it.
15. Qc2 Rb8 16. b3 Be7 17. Bf2 Qc7 18. Nc5 Qa5 19. Na4
15. Qe2 Rb8 16. Bf6 Nxf6 17. Nxf6 Kf7 18. Ng4 Qxb2
15. Bf2 c5 16. Qc2 Bb7 17. b4 O-O-O 18. O-O-O Qc7 19. Nxc5 Bxc5 20. Bxc5 Nf4

By drawn I mean <= 0.10 after 10 moves. By won I mean >= 1.50 no matter blacks alternatives along the line.

Hi,

I looked into 12... Rb8, interesting idea. I have added analysis of this move to the original post.

Apart from 13. c4, white can also try 13. Qd2 (or similarly, 13. b3), when it seems black has nothing better than to enter the endgames arising after 13... dxe5. These endgames are essentially the same as the endgame after 12... dxe5.
Parent - - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2012-04-08 05:44
Black has 13. b3 Qa5 Qd2 14. Qd2 Qxd2 15. Kxd2 dxe5 16. c4 Bb4 17. Kc2 Ne3 to draw.
Also 13. Qd2 Rxb2 14. Bc4 dxe5 15. Nf6 Nxf6 16. Qxd8 Kxd8 17. O-O-O Ke8 18. Kxb2 hxg5 19. Bxg5 Nd5 goes out to a draw, unless I missed something?
How do you post your entire tree as you did before?
Parent - - By Alkelele (***) Date 2012-04-08 06:05 Edited 2012-04-08 06:08
I don't know about your line after 13. b3, it seems complicated.

You are right, the ending in the 13. Qd2 line is hard to assess. Maybe black has enough for the exchange.

I added a bit more analysis to the original post.

You can copy the entire tree by exporting your analysis as a PGN file. In Fritz, you just go to copy the game, and then the analysis is in the clipboard and I can just copy-paste. I am sure you can do the same in other interfaces as well.
Parent - - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2012-04-08 06:15
I will keep going through 13. b3 to be sure I have gotten everything.
My Qd2 seems quite solid and I do not think there is enough left on the board to continue into a very deep game.
In aquarium all of the IDEA analysis is saved as .hsh and .elm, plus an .epd files for results and .xml for analysis nodes.
Parent - - By Alkelele (***) Date 2012-04-08 06:21
In Aquarium, what I guess you can do is open a game and run through your analysis. Then it should be possible to export that game as PGN, I would believe.
Parent - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2012-04-08 06:28
That would take far too long for all of my lines.
I have found a way to convert .epd to .pgn, but it is too large now (33 MB).

And my final report of the night is

I have 22. Bf2 (instead of 22. Bb3) as white's best move, with a score of +0.48.  I don't have this analyzed very deeply, but one possibility is 22. Bf2 f5 23. h3 Bf6+ 24. Kc1.  This might be getting drawish, though--white needs to trade those bishops, I think.

Actually, I would be quite fine with it if we weren't about to start a team match in the next month.  I probably wouldn't be giving away much at all, but any slight advantage is valuable in such a situation of such a high draw likelihood.

Hi Tim,

I added some more analysis of 12... Qb6 13. c3 Rb8. I can't decide if I like 14. g6 or 14. Qf3 better. Neither move seems entirely convincing yet. The endgames after 14. g6 seem a bit drawish for me, perhaps black can save one of them. The move 14. Qf3 is complicated weed, after 14. Qf3 Be7 15. b4!? (15. b3!?) dxe5, white can choose between 16. Bf2 and 16. Bg3, and it's some complicated stuff. I haven't found a very clear advantage for white yet.

I added analysis of your suggestion 19. Qg4 in the "old" mainline after 12... Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 fxg6 15. Bf2 Qxb2 16. Rb1 Qxa2 17. Bd3 Be7 18. 0-0 Qa5. I also expanded on the analysis of 19. Qf3. Both moves seem quite promising, close to completely winning, probably a bit more analysis will prove 99.999999% wins with either move. I also expanded the analysis of the somewhat promising (but not convincing) 19. c4.

In the line you give after 15. Bf2 c5, I find also 20. Bc4 promising (20. Nxe5+ is the alternative). Generally, black seems in pretty bad shape after 15. Bf2 c5. I expanded the analysis of this line.

I added your suggestion of 16. Nc5, after 15. Bf2 Qc7. Also 16. Bc4 seems good for white.

So, after 15. Bf2, black seems to be in pretty bad shape (15... Qxb2 loses, and the alternatives 15... c5 and 15... Qc7 give white a big advantage). I wonder if it would be possible for you to get a higher score than 0.59 in Idea here if you add my analysis.

Going back to 14... Qe3+ 15. Qe2 fxg6, white can also try the simple 16. Nxf6+ which seems to give a fairly clear advantage in the endgame.

Going all the way back, I also expanded the analysis of 12... Rb8 a lot. I am still undecided as to whether 13. c4, or 13. Qd2, or 13. b3 is more promising. Maybe black is fairly ok.

16. Bf2 (16. Bg3!? hxg5 17. Bxe5 f6 18. Nd6 Kf8 0.08) Qc7 17. g6 fxg6 18. Bc4 0.29

But white has a nice game here
12... Qb6 13. c3 Rb8 14. g6 fxg6 15. Nf6 Kf7 16. Nxd5 exd5 17. Qf3 Kg8 18. Bd3 dxe5 19. Bxg6 Rb7 20. Bf2 Qd8 21. O-O e4 22. Qe2 0.51

For your old line 12... Qb6 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 fxg6 15. Bf2 Qxb2 16. Rb1 Qxa2 17. Bd3 Be7 18. 0-0 Qa5
Qg4 is completely won along with any move after 16... Qxa2 and most lines after 15... Qxb2
19. Qg4 2.05
19. Qf3 1.05
19. c4   0.85
The only way black may able to not lose is 15... c5 16. Qg4 Nf4 17. O-O-O 0.52
which is why I am staying away from 14... fxg6 and going with 14... Qe3 0.40
But of course all of this can be skipped with 12... Rb8 0.22

15... Qc7 16. Nc5 (16. Bc4 Be7 17. Qg4 Kf7 18. O-O Kg7 19. Qg3 c5 20. b4 Nf4 0.33) 16... Bg7 17. Bd3
Nf4 18. Be4 O-O 19. O-O Rb8 20. Qc2 0.62

I added all of your analysis from yesterday and am still updating todays. It takes me about 2 hours per 1000 positions.
Your main line isn't still going through 16... Qxa2 is it. After 13. c3 dxe5 14. g6 it is Qe3 0.40 for me.

Indeed, in your first line with 15. b3, 16. Bf2 is no good. The question is if 16. Bg3 (or 16. Nf6+) is any good. I added some more analysis. Right now, it seems like black has good counterplay also after 16. Bg3, but maybe I have missed something important.

It is after the apparently more promising 15. b4 dxe5 that both 16. Bf2 and 16. Bg3 are interesting. I added some analysis after your 19. Rd1 move after 15... hxg5 16. Bf2. Complicated stuff.

Yes, I agree, but I suspect it is somewhat drawish. I would like some more convincing stuff to kill 13... Rb8 :-)

I am still analysing various lines.

I have found a separate way to post my analysis.

Thanks, I took a look.

I updated the file in the original post with some more analysis. The move 17. b3 is interesting in the 14. Qd2 line, I added some analysis to support yours.

Generally, things are beginning to look fairly stable in various lines, and we can probably best assess some of the endgames with tests. But at any rate, we have turned the 7... Nc6 line upside down :-). 12... Rb8 best try for black? Who would have thought :-).

Btw, which engine are you using? I get somewhat different scores than you, I think, and I am using Rybka 4.

Do you give a set amount of time for a position when you use IDEA to check analysis?
Parent - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2012-04-08 19:12
Deep Rybka 4.1 with customized piece weights for IA and houdini 2.0c to score.
IDEA settings: 20s per position.

13... Ne3 14. Qd2 d5 15. Nf6+ Qxf6 16. gxf6 Bb4 17. b3 dxc4 {+0.22}  (17... Rg8 {+0.22}  18. Bg3 dxc4 19. bxc4 {+0.22 Score} ) 18. bxc4 Rg8 19. Bg3 Rg4 20. Be2 Rd4 21. Qxb4 Rxb4 22. Kf2 Nxc4

At first sight, this ending looks very promising for white to me. It is clear black is walking on a thin line to draw here :-). Currently I am playing some long comp-comp games in this line, to figure out if it really is a draw. I have noticed that Houdini is often too optimistic with its eval in worse endings, so I really doubt +0.22 is correct here.

BTW, nice work so far and thanks for sharing!

I have been trying to trade off for one of those white bishops.
23. Rhb1 is white's best move after 13... Ne3 14. Qd2 d5 15. Nf6+ Qxf6 16. gxf6 Bb4 17. b3 dxc4 18. bxc4 Rg8 19. Bg3 Rg4 20. Be2 Rd4 21. Qxb4 Rxb4 22. Kf2 Nxc4.
I have however turned over all of my time into 18... c5
The black lines out of this will trade off plenty of material at a cost to engine evaluation, but it is lovely and I am sticking to it.

Hi Tim,

18... c5 is an interesting move. I don't quite see it work out too well in the end, following:

19. Bg3 Nc2+ 20. Kd1 Bxd2 21. Kxc2 Be3 22. Bd3! (rather than 22. Be2).

Let me know what you think. Maybe I have missed some other good tries for black along the moves.

Nvm, after 18... c5 white is able to force a win after 19. Bf2 by keeping its bishop on c5.

Now I am looking for into 18... Rg8 to be sure white cannot force a win out of it.

Interesting, I am trying to turn 7... Nc6 into another drawing weapon against 6. Bg5
while you are trying to refute the entire line. I hope this goes somewhere.

It's great fun.

I agree that black has problems after 7...Nc6?!, which is probably +/-.  Much safer is 7...Qb6=
Parent - - By Nelson Hernandez (Silver) [us] Date 2012-04-08 14:29 Edited 2012-04-08 14:37
In my book 7...Nc6 is ranked #7 in order of preference and is marked black, i.e. "not playable".  The path I would likely take once in this line would be 13...Qe3+, which certainly doesn't look promising, but is at least better than following the main line to positions I am seeing as often-played and 97% lost.
Parent - - By Weirwindle (***) [us] Date 2012-04-08 14:59
13... Qe3 is lost here.
What do you have for 12... Rb8 Nelson. I am drawing everything out with it very well.
I will upload 500 games out of 7... Nc6 and try to capture most of the lines.
At the moment if I set a computer (Rybka with a little bit of randomness) without a book up
against my 12... Rb8 there is never a win.
Parent - By Nelson Hernandez (Silver) [us] Date 2012-04-08 16:11
I only have three games in book after Rb8 so the statistics are quite meaningless.  (I haven't posted 2012 games yet, though.)
Parent - - By Alkelele (***) Date 2012-04-08 16:12
Hi Nelson,

Can you tell how many times 15. Bf2 has been played in the old mainline (with 13. c3) ? Has it been played by humans yet?

Are there any recent GM or corr. games in the 7... Nc6 system? (within last year or so)

How much do you have on 12... Rb8? Is that fairly uncharted territory?

Through the end of 2011 I'm showing 39, 100% Playchess, no human or correspondence (and I keep up with those too).  I haven't posted any 2012 games to book yet; I am sure there have been more since as it has been seen pretty much continually since it was first played in Baxus-White Queen on 03.01.2011.  (Baxus played it 7 out of the first 8 times in Jan-Feb 2011 and may be related to W00t and Gortt9, who also played it often in the early days of that variation.)

> How much do you have on 12... Rb8? Is that fairly uncharted territory?

As mentioned earlier, only three games in that line and all over the map:

Crafty-Hossa, ICC, 1-0, 1998.12.18
Twee King, Rybka 3-Dashers, Rybka 3 Dynamic, 1-0, 2009.02.18
Katzenmaier, Fire 2.2-Like-Water, Houdini 2.0b Pro, 1/2-1/2, 2011.11.06

Thanks. It's quite interesting to see this 15. Bf2 move introduced on Playchess, while New in Chess yearbook was later discussing weaker alternatives (as far as I know). Unfortunately, playchess players never get credit for their discoveries (when chess people comment on moves and games, they pretend that only human games or corr. games exist).
