Hello, my computer has crashed 6 times in the last 2 days while running houdini pro aquarium.  It worked well for past 5 months til recently.  Don't think there are any new programs on there.  Maybe something is wrong with my computer.  I am close to throwing down $900 bucks on another laptop, but does anyone have any ideas what I can do to find the problem?  I am assuming some hardware is malfunctioning, such as the power supply or motherboard, but I really don't know.  I have samsung windows home 7, Intel i5 cpu 2.4 GHz quad core, 4 GB ram, 64 bit OS

Probably a heat issue because of dust buildup in your system.

That is the first thing I would guess, based on "five months".  Buy a small air compressor and clean your system every 2-3 months!

Are you getting blue screens or is Aquarium getting hung because Houdini is crashed?
Also what Fulcrum2000 said is possible.

install core temp, and look for the max temp. of your cores, and the actual temp, and look if your temp. is high

if is high, open the computer, and clen it...or replace the cooler

edit:is a laptop or a desktop?

Don't assume anything just yet. Go into Bios and check the PSU and is if it is fluctuating if not -it isn't that.  Usually blue screen crashes are associated with bad memory. Black screen - usually, graphics drivers. Crashes in general- might be conflicts in drivers. If you updated any drivers and didn't do a clean install.

download memcheck86

run it in dos and test each stick one at a time. I would test at lest to level 4  about an hour per stick. Test a stick - shut down replace with another stick boot up and do this until all the sticks are tested.

Usually, if it is one bad stick it will show up under stress testing and when you run chess that is stressful on memory.
