I have installed the Windows 8 customer preview on my desktop in dual boot mode with Windows 7.

My initial impressions are mixed at best. The Windows start button is gone. Its replacement is a whole new start screen which appears to be tailored to mobile and touch screen users.
The windows task manager has a new look. It is somewhat more friendly but it certainly doesnt like Rybka UCI processes   . They simply dont show up at all in task manager even though they are working just fine.
Other UCI engines are displayed in task manager. It must be something to do with multiple processes and shared memory which I believe is unique to Rybka in the engine world.  One thing that is improved is boot and shutdown times. Overall I think Microsoft may have a hard time selling Windows 8 to hard core power desktop users.

Yes, they are trying to turn our desktops into tablets. As Ubuntu is doing with the Unity GUI, and as Gnome is doing with the Gnome 3 desktop on other Linux distros. Imagine the mouse pointer as your finger, and you get the picture. Well, my PC is not a tablet, it is a PC. It has a mouse, a keyboad, and it isn't touch screen. The new interfaces are just not appropriate in my opinion. A tablet is a tablet, and a desktop is a desktop. They require different GUIs and interfaces. Of course, the PC of tomorrow may be different from the PC of today...

Note that Apple have now dropped the "Mac" prefix for it's latest operating system version. It is now called just "OS X 10.8". They are bringing features from the IPhone iOS to the Mac. Thereby dumbing it down.

So our PCs are being "dumbed down" to the lowest common denominator, a phone and/or a tablet.

a wheel is all you need on a mouse to emulate swipes

then click is the same as tapping

I am a developer so I am very much in tune with the user interface

Why would I want to "swipe" on my PC ?

Fortunately with Linux you have lots of choices with GUIs so you don't need to put up with this rubbish. But with Windows you are stuck with what MS gives you

I have used Windows since the get go.

I have also used FreeBSD which was around long before Linux ever surfaced

I have a Windows Server and I can use the Hyper-V to run anything I want including FreeBSD and Linux.

3indows and microsoft seem to be tailoring itself to the teens now as they only speak smart phone and as an affect this has trickled down now to our desktops GUIs.
I'll be keeping Windows 7, thx. I'll leave it for the kiddies to play with the big pretty buttons and bloat graphics.

enjoy it while it lasts as the next version will probably be completely in a cloud. LOL

Well...fortunately there will be no need to upgrade if you don't choose to. I am still happily using Windows XP Prox64 with no issues whatsoever, as I prefer the user interface to that of Windows 7 - not just for chess but in general. It is still the best Windows operating system in my opinion, and I would be suprised if that changed with Windows 8 from what I have seen and read so far.

Mark I'm running Win64 myself (bought a REALLY CHEAP OEM VERSION) on my Q6600 it is still chugging along and can still run the newest games!

Yah - if it ain't broke don't fix it!  I b runnin XP PRO 64 as well.  I may change when support drys up.  Also it does not support Direct x 10.

If as said in this thread that they are targeting teens/ youth with new system, and I can see no real advantage to upgrading - why bother?  I do not like the idea that the Task manager does not see Rybka running.   What else does it not see?:confused::slim:  Perhaps Microsft is going the way of the Automobile-  that is being made too complex for one to use without paying Micrsoft tech support!

If this is the new thesis of windows (8) I will wait for the rebound - the anti - thesis -from customer complaints  (windows 9)- then buy the synthesis of windows 10   That is usually how I roll.

Still hating on the Fritz Ribbon regards - Nimzovik
