IMHO the tension somewhat was released when black played 28....gh2. I would prefer 28...Ra7, idea is if white will play h3 i have to sac minor pieces on h3 while i can swing my queen on the queen side via Bd7/Qd8/Qa7 let my minor pieces work on the kingside.
> the tension somewhat was released when black played 28....gh2
if i don't play that then white plays h3 next. and bxh3 will fail, white can defend.
You can always prepare for the h3 sac by knight a manuever nh8/nf7/ng5. A proper post mortem analysis will be more fun after your game.
you may be right. i looked at this bxh3 idea, including that knight maneuver, had some trouble in trying to make it work - i didn't look at that idea for very long in most lines, white seemed to have resources in a few key lines and i rejected the idea probably a bit too quickly.
Ok in post mortem we shall see the best plan.

interesting fortress for me, didn't really analyze anything beyond here other than don't allow takes h4 in some circumstances. i thought white would have tried another plan though still drawn.
drew a 2400 player with Black otb last night, was winning or borderline close to winning most of the game, and then when i was finally winning with a simple plan, which i saw, i force a perpetual
, though i had 7 versus 19 seconds w/ 5 second delay, there was very little risk. it was a good result for me especially since i just made up the opening in a g/30 minute, usually this is a bad idea, but the concept seemed really sound fortunately. it's a great feeling just to play simple, pragmatic and well-grounded chess, and things work out your way, NM approx 75 points away once the TDs submit the crosstables... with a little luck and more good results possibly achieve NM by mid-April

This game went quickly from fantastic to bore-city,
That's the way it goes sometimes.
Matt, congrats on your OTB results lately! I remember back a few years when I could actually play decent chess, I was 32 points from Expert. I figured, anytime now, never made it,
Those last few points are the hardest to get, good luck and let us know!

interesting game...i must admit that was interesting
congratulations to both players
congratulations to both players
Very gg guys, lots of excitement.
thanks guys. i'm pleased with the game, it was a nice creative achievement. d5, a5, Qe1, b4 and all the White knight moves were interesting choices by white, and g3 and Rg7 for Black in terms of which points of the game I will look at again. i guess a question is whether white would have wanted to play a5 or c4 earlier, the best for white in the latter case that i saw was a transposition to the game line and i don't recall my analysis for the former, it seemed to me that white's queenside expansion was correct as played, but i will have to check this, white's 14th thru 26th moves. i enjoyed my knight maneuvers, i'm not sure the first one was completely necessary Nb to eventually e8, but the second one starting with nf8 and eventually to g3 was the point for playing the g3 push, this was risky and i didn't see some things all the way thru although i saw that i was able to get in h4 in at the right time i had not worked out beyond ng3. i could have played rg8 instead of g3 and white probably has a nominal edge. paul then consolidated his position perfectly, although there were some moves that were forced so i expected no less, and things got tricky again i found a clever draw line from qh5 to a drawn position, which happened, by fortress or perpetuals. qg6 instead of qh5 maybe was possible, with sac options on e4 or d5, and many tricks, but white comes out better there, so i thought, i didn't work out qg6 lines. a few other tricks were possible to play for g3 and fish for bxh3 but white should have some advantage with best play in that case. for my first 20 moves, it was very quick analysis, black has a clear plan, and there were a lot of hidden resources for black --- to go for the race position is white's best try after Pd5/e5 locked structure was set. i'm going to check the xb5 sac again, my analysis thru 18 moves, most of it was erased at some point, but i did a lot of it again, i was sure the sacs don't work, i know black draws but i had analyzed a win too in that case. white's development of the knights seemed to me exactly right, but again i will need to check this again. not sure if a5 a move earlier makes a difference in the position, c4 a move earlier than played did not change the position in my analysis. an interesting plan i thought white could implement was to play rd1 and walk the king to c1, instead of blasting open the queenside, but this too seemed equal and double-edged. probably the most complicated game i've played in term of the sheer number of white options, although probably not the most difficult to play as black as a KID player, black's lines were clear, i think the pressure is on white to find the right way in more instances. i don't think i've ever had a full board of pieces in a real game after 40(!) moves! glad to break new territory on this line with such a great opponent!! -Cheers, Matt
Very interesting game, thank you both. Nice result.
This game some what changes my concept of this double edge opening
I went fairly deep to this one and other one, and IMO they don't work at all. You did well, without running unclear risks, which I think is not a very good idea against such strong player.

gg fellows enjoyed it.
certainly one of the hardest games i have ever played. No its the hardest game i have ever played and i have played some tough ones in last couple of years.
I was white and nearly got stuffed, just shows how much i know about chess.
Matts play was brilliant and i have no doubt would have beaten me me otb.i was rated 2000 ELO 40 years ago but age takes its toll.

thanks. glad you appreciated the game. who knows about my play otb bc in rated games drew a 2400 friday with black, beat 3 1900s saturday, and lost to 3 1900s sunday - in part too much chess and i didn't play pragmatically, the one loss affected my mental approach to the next game, so my rating back to about 2100.
did you check 22...g3!? It's difficult to see what White plays on that... [Edit: By the way, 22...g3 seems to fail given White best play.]

Did you look at 30...Bf8 ? The main idea is route the B via e7 to either h4 or d8 (to free the N on e8 to go attacking). Additionally the h file is cleared for the black rook. Black has some lovely slow motion piles up down the h-file in some lines.
I am not sure if this gives black an advantage but I am also not sure it doesn't! Also, whilst I have not analysed this exhaustively, black appears to be safe in the resulting lines, despite the early engine scores.
30...h4 is also fun after 31.Nf2 h3 32.Nxh3 but 32 Ng4 and 32. gxh3 are less interesting from black's persepctive.

30...h4 Nf2 (and Ng4 next and Black is worse)
30...Bf8 Qf1 is what I had and I didn't look at this deeply, besides Qf1-h1, and on h4 Nf2 h3 Nxh3 Bxh3 Kg1, White is better. But other lines I didn't check, so worth checking.
And it seems like my analysis on 30...Bf8 is wrong so... will check now.
ok so 30...Bf8 as White I will play Qf1 and Kh1, and Nb1-c3-b5-c7, and I'm not sure if Black is getting his counterplay in time. Even Nb1-c3-b5 may be enough on 30...Bf8, but it seems still things are not still entirely simple, probably then Qf1 first... in which case White can get a position in which is Q on h2 and K on g1 if he would like.
There's also 31.Nf1 too and the Q may just be free to take on b5 next. Although I am not sold on the idea it certainly is very interesting! I did consider the idea of putting the Bd8 in other lines but not in this position. White seems to have more real options here. Nf1-Kg1-Nh2-g4 is an idea... perhaps this may even be strongest - to bring the knight to h2 - because in that case Nh4 is always met with Bxh4 and h4 or h3 is met by Ng4, and white likely gets an edge.

below is a pgn of the game including many of the forum comments that pertain to the analysis of the positions, they are a bit more organized this way. the unattributed comments are probably mine.

I have black with an advantage in all the lines I looked at after 30...Bf8 and the immediate 31.Nb1
This was the main attraction for me of playing 30..Bf8. 31.Nb1 was a plausible move, so I felt 30...Bf8 might give you practical winning chances without any risk, whereas everything plausible the 30... Nf8 line seems to force things towards a draw.
I had 31.Qf1 Be7 32.Kh1 being level and having checked the lines again I still come out with that eval e.g 32...Bd8 33.Nb1 Nf6 34.Qg1 h4 35.Nf2 h3 36.Nxh3 Bxh3 37.gxh3 Qh5 Nh4 39.Bxh4 40.Rg2 Rg3 41.Rxg3 f.xg3 42.Nc2 Nh5 43.Ne2 Qg5 =
31.Nf1 and 31.Nf2 also seem fine for black to me; I only looked a tthem briefly but I think black is certainly not worse after eithe rmove.
But just as I was about to post my analysis I started looking belatedly at 31.Qf1 Be7 32.Qh1 and that seems to lead to an advantage for white.
So 30...Bf8 seems like an interesting idea but incorrect.

leads to advantage for Black after ...h4 ...h3, the endgame is better/ winning for Black after Q trades
in the pgn i posted there are comments on Bf8, I did not work this out completely.
as i posted: white plan on Bf8: Nf1-Kg1-Nh2-[g4!?] - to bring the knight to h2 - because in that case Nh4 is always met with Bxh4 and h4 or h3 is met by Ng4, and white likely gets an edge.
for instance: 31. Nf1 Be7 Kg1 h4 Nh2 h3 Ng4 however, looking at this line deeper this may just be okay for Black, would require deeper analysis
I read the pgn.
So after 32...h4 33.Kg1 h3 34.Kf1 what are you going to play? I don't see how you take the queens out to your advantage. 34...Qh5/6 35.gxh3 Qxh6 seems to lead to an awful endgame for black

sorry i had a different line, I had 33.Nf2 in which case a queen trade could happen, 33. Kg1 interesting, maybe just Nh4-g2-e3!? have to check...
I should note that my preference however is 31. Nf1 as in the line I gave.
