 Sorry to disappoint all of you; it will be me without a doubt. I plan on not losing any games this time around.!!!:lol:

My goal is to not lose 5 games this year, and I expect to succeed in this endeavor. (9/10 of my games last year there was decisive advantage at some point and 8 of those were converted - I have a knack of finding original and strong ideas but the implementation(!) of them, that is, my subsequent technique, there was/is a lot to be desired).  My opening preparation is really quite excellent for this tournament, for my entire repertoire, such that I can diversify with Black, against 1.e4, I can play 1...c5, ...e5, ...e6, or ...g6, with confidence, and I have figured out White's best approach against most everything, or, at the least, where to look for strong ideas.  Here I expect to have an edge on the rest of the field.  Plus I have a few really awesome novelties I would like to employ before someone else does and some rare lines that lead to pleasant and dynamic games.

I think that ppipper has to be considered the favorite, his win in the Catalan made a particularly positive impression on me of his play.  Somehow I don't think he will win this year because as defending champion, he will find it particularly difficult to win a game, I think - and I doubt he will go 3/3 with the Black pieces in the French this year.  I predict Mark, Paul, or Jose to win.  I would give Ruben, Sebi, and Uly an outside shot, but I am less convinced that they will win enough games to win the tournament.  If I had to choose one, I would say Paul is a safe prediction, because he does not lose easily.  Plus there are other unknown quantities this year.

I predict a plus score this year for myself, which I think not unlikely if I lose 1 game maximum.  Also I hope to beat at least one of the top 6 seeds.  Until I achieve this, I cannot make a more ambitious prediction for myself.  With the Black pieces, my goal will be to equalize normally - this is my key goal - and where I have made the most progress since last year.

Your unbridled arrogance is inspiring Matt! I was going to sit out this year because of a crushing number of games I have going, plus my outdated equipment, but after reading this I told myself, how could I NOT participate!

Garvin, I will send a PM to you. I now confirm my part in this 2012 event.

i think a tough guy to beat will be Barnard, although he does not have big hardware he uses his time wisely.

thanks for your kindly words Paul, you are also a very strong player, and im sure you are one of the favourites to win this tournament

I agree!  Time management is a good point of consideration for me, so thanks for the thought.  By the way, thinking of your Petroff game with Barnard - I now think for sure 3. Nxe5 is the way to go in the Petroff now, happily there's one new-ish way to sustain quite a lot of pressure there for White; besides, I worked out 3.d4 to a draw and all the key lines here have been demonstrated at the top levels, although I did find this new idea of a queen sacrifice at some point, but all the lines are so forcing, and clearly burn out to draw, so sad.

Great!  Glad you are playing, the game we played was one of the favorites of mine that I played last year, although they were all interesting and quite complicated.  I am not sure which part of what I said was construed as arrogant although there is some presumption to say that my preparation of opening systems is where I have an edge on the field.  I have performed extensive comprehensive research on the openings systems that I will be playing, and have worked out the positions that are relevant to my repertoire with the Black pieces, even the Modern defenses, deeply in some positions, to approximate equalities in which Black has no problems so I do not see how I should lose.  Last year I did not have a comprehensive repertoire and lacked knowledge of some nuances in the Scheveningen/Najdorf structures and in lines of the KID, which led to a few problems in my games last year, against Sebi and ralunger.  And I think my losses from the last year have made me more aware of the necessity of more comprehensive and objective analysis, which is particularly necessary in the asymmetrical positions I play.   And sure I am enthusiastic to demonstrate some of my newfound knowledge.

I was (mostly) teasing. But I like your enthusiasm. I hope this year along with the incredibly strong chess being played, that there might be more lighthearted banter. I will not be taking this lightly this year, exactly the opposite. I also have no illusions about winning, I just want to have fun this year. I just might be able to spoil someone's bid for the top.

My pick for the darkhorse this year is Alvin (Natmaku). He is very strong OTB and comes up with many surprises. I thought at first to win this, a person might have to take chances and venture into the unknown, but Jose proved that there is plenty of unknown even in the main lines. So the winner this year will be whoever plays the best chess.

Lolz... thanks for the kind words Scott. Yes, I would be eyeing for the top place this time. It is preferable to play not so popular standard opening/variation/system as I believe that it boils down to who has the best chess knowledge and implement it in fast time control hoping to outplay my opponent. I might carry some risky chess by playing some exchange sac or positional pawn sac for the initiative so looking forward for a lively chess.

I am glad to read that you are all opening up your repertoire, I really would like to see not as many drawish openings (e.g. B90) as last year, I wish that my victory has contributed little bit to this fact.

Personally I really prefer positional openings and positional battles, and that's what I will look for.

I don't have any clear favorite player to win, although Seby (very very strong opening preparation) and Paul (very high chess knowledge and very clever human evaluation of engine's evaluations) are always good candidates.

This year it will be much more harder for me for obviuos reasons. Also during the first 3 rounds of the tour I am afraid I wont be at 100% due to my job, but if I managed to be in top positions in 4th round... count me in the favorite group!
- By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2012-01-27 16:31
If David is playing I vote for him as the favorite for now.
