I was thinking, in order to shorten the time it takes to run a tournament of 10+ abk books, I can just run a quick tournament, and take only the top 5 for serious testing right? I can just remove the weak ones from the tournament and speed up games since there are less contestants. Well, then I thought, books are supposed to be able to respond to a wide variety of openings. If two books only play Najdorf, what are you going to do if the book comes across one that never plays it? The book runs out of lines. And the (possibly inferior book) wins since it actually has lines for that opening.
In fact I was just using Tria today and found out in one very common opening, the book had no lines! In effect, it'll be very easy to create an "Anti-Tria" book and win the tournament...
What do you guys think? To test Tria 1.5L Varied and 1.4L+ and Aaricia, should I put in another 10 books to test it's repretoir of openings? Also, running a large tournament full of books is fine to test one book only, but what if it is to test any future books too? I can't imagine running a gigantic tournament of books just to test and new books that come out...
Now I have a headache.
Thank you.

Please, please note that it is more complicated than at first glance.
Never Ending Story ..
But Sedat have good practice and testing of 10 - 20 of the best books is a good idea.

Dear Dark_wizzie,
Actually your idea is not bad,but unfortunately nowadays there are not many Book Authors who create oftenly new books for Arena Chess GUI
In other words, there are no many new competitors, that's why the interest will be not big due to testing new books against books which are too old-dated
And its will be great,if we will see a lot of new Arena books (at least 15-20 participants by different Top Book Makers) which are belong to 2011 year
However,i wish you good luck with your Arena book tournaments
Best,
Sedat

Arena is the first GUI I've ever use, and it reminds me of when I first got into computer chess, so I've grown a little close to it. Also, I heard that the ABK books take up less space. Arena is free, and it's easy to edit lines in a book with a click of a button. But yes, Arena isn't the hot ticket item as of late.
However... a few points I'd like to make regarding all this...
1. There are still some books in ABK coming out. MrQ book and Tria 1.5L Varied came out yesterday, and Lango book came out today. For the lack of variety of books I test, I make up for with accuracy. I will be able to test the books more times, leading to a more reliable result. ABK isn't a dead format.
2. There is a mess of CTGs released for free. Even with the commercial CTG books, it's a mess. Too many books, too little organization, too little testing done. I know you try your best, Sedat, but you alone can't test books made up by, say, a hundred people.
3. I don't have software to use CTG right this moment, and Chessbase 11 isn't for free. (If I can't afford a $30 book, you bet I cannot afford a $100+ GUI!!!) Chessbase light can't do anything with books. It's kind of dumb.
4. If I am to test CTGs, I must crown two winners: One for free books and one for commercial books. I would need to buy the commercial books to test them, which, as you might guess, won't happen. If I am to test free CTG, there are too many books to test... Even with 30 books it'll take forever and a half to play 100 games in just FIVE minute per game for ALL participants.
5. I will test ABK books in a new format: I will test new books by adding the book to a tournament, then adding the top 5 books that I have. This way books might have to have more variations in order to win.
Cheers.
