"A normal procedure to append downloaded PGN games to a database, would be:
1. Download the file and save it to your preferred folder for PGN downloads.
1a. Unzip/unpack the file if required, to get a PGN file like "championship.pgn" for example
2. In Hiarcs, press the F12 function key (or select File/Open/Database from the menu)
2a. Ensure that the database you want to append the new games to, is openend.
3. Select Edit/Append Games... from the menu of the database screen --> file selector appears
4. find your downloaded PGN file and select it --> click open --> done! :-)
4a. It is possible that you need to adjust the file format selector to include *.PGN
Alternatively, you can open the PGN file in Hiarcs first - which is recommendable to check if it is ok, complete etc. - and then select all (CTRL-A), copy (CTRL-C), switch to your big database and paste with CTRL-V.

Hello Mike (and others),
I tried to do what you said and it works, but there is still a problem. I just followed your procedure and downloaded 5 or 6 files and appended the games to my database. No problem, except that for every file I downloaded there are now 3 icons on my desktop (a PGI, a PGN and a configuration settings file). Since I do not like this mess, I made a new folder and put everything in it, but then the games disappear from the database. It seems clear that the original files have to be on the desktop, but I do not like this. Is there no way of putting them in a folder or something, so that I do not have to look at it all the time? Or do I need to do it over and choose another location for the files I download (how do I do that?)?
Anyway many thanks,
Jack

There is no need to put the PGN files on the desktop (nor for any other file). In point 1 of the procedure, I assumend that you have a folder where you use to put the files into, which you download from internet, like
D:\downloads\chessgames\
(or more like windows standard, for example C:\User\Jack\Downloads... or similar)
Normally, if you start a download you should get the opportunity to choose, where the files will be saved into. I would not choose the desktop for that but a normal folder, like above. Also, if you have appended the PGN game to an existing database, these games will be stored in that database permanently and moving or deleting the PGN files they came from, should not affect them anymore. These files have no connection. It's like copy and paste. So, if they disappeared somehow, something was wrong. Make sure that you don't skip point 3 of the procedure.
