When I was young, me and a friend tried to do exactly the same what vas did. We wanted to make a chess-engine, and for that we searched a lot of information about chess engines, and we noticed that crafty was playing a lot better than our own engine. We wanted to understand crafty and to make it better, and we spend time analyzing it. And then fruit appeared, and to us it was like magic how fabian could make the search algorithm so fast. So our plan was now to improve fruit and take some code from crafty too, and perhaps also using bitboards. We never did open source projects before, so of course we haven't been thinking about improving the engines and giving back the source code. Now we wanted to have a strong engine, and to make money with it, that was our plan. But I started school, and there was no time left anymore for programming, so it died somehow.
Later when I started to write open source code, I stared to understand why it's wrong to copy code and to act like it's your own. But at that time, when we "found" the source codes on the internet, it was like we would have found something on the street, and now belongs to us because we found it.
I guess, since Vas seems not to be a open-source guy, I guess that he also doesn't understand very well why it's that bad to copy from somebody else.
That's why I really understand Vas.
What I really dont understand is, why Vas doesnt appologize to bob and fabian. Since it's clear that R1 copyied a lot from crafty, i wonder why vas doesnt say: "i'm sorry bob, i know i lied, but I was ashamed to admit that I was copying."

THis forum has seen a whole lot of falsehood. When they waited for Vas making an update they came running insulting Vas all day long. Someone like you doesnt realize that he is worse than what he is trying to stamp as evil wrong. It's your hypocrisy that stinks. Is that a reasonable standpoint to advise someone else to apologize? Is it your business to appear here to talk such a nonsense. Because what is if Vas didnt do anything wrong? Dont you understand that Vas know better to do than a nonamed figure like you. I have told the story of the 6 years long character assassination, German Rufmord, and you have the chuzpah to act here like hypocrit? Look, I could take your text and then asking Bob to apologize. Because in my eyes he is the cheater.
That vas copied from crafty is already proven. I dont know why non-programmers need to deny that strong. If you would be a relative of vas i would understand that you deny everything, but why do anonymous people invent such rediculos theories like: "he could have produced exactly the same code without copying".
What will you do if that case will go to a court and vas will be officialy spoken quilty? Will you still deny?
I'm curious if now after the facts are on table, if Vas still denies to have ever copied something from crafty.
It seems exactly that attitude of vas of not cooperating caused him that troubles, and i guess he will get more, because if you copy the work of somebody and make money, and then in the end you even deny to have copied, than you give the original autor more reasons to proove that code was copied.

Cipri, I speak of relevance. Having Crafty in experimental isnt wrong if you then throw it out and get 700 points better than at the start. For normal people this wont make it before any court other than your private lynch court, anonymous cipri.
The other question you mentioned is a more difficult. Why opposing obsessed formalism nitpicker at all? The eternal question for the human comedy as such. A policeman will give different answers than an artist or someone who is concerned about the character structure that leads to the obsession of relatively less important aspects in life. Of course in computerchess we have many who like that field because they can treat human beings like machines. Of course they will dislike a special button for *cheating* because they have the delusion of purity and cleanness.
But human beings arent clean like machines. In Vasik's case the 700 jump is what makes him clean. Dont confuse it. A jump of 4 points is also nice but then Crafty would be thrown out anyway. In Vasik's history Crafty wasnt replacing Vas own talents as a genial programmer. If Vas speaks of Public Domain it means sort of tongue in cheek because all others of the closed source players hide the same secrets. Users would be surprised if their program couldnt handle underpromotions.

You speak of irrelevance. One can't violate a license agreement / copyright when one wants to... And the minute he entered a crafty derivative in any open competition, such as CCT, or CCRL, or whatever, he violated the license agreement...
