Smarthink 1.20 is pretty cool as well!

Some missing from your list are Hiarcs 10 (or so, I've heard) and Critter 0.70 (that plays very unlike its bigger brothers).

so if you play positional chess then... you can pick & chose from a million cookie cutter bland useless engines, but if you're a tactician, it sucks to be you unless you're willing to cough up $50 or more? that's an annoying bias in the extreme!

Chess engines in general are bad at quiet or closed positions, so no engine is going to help you if you are studying strategy.  All engines are competent at basic tactics/combinations aimed at the gain of material.

There are a number of free engines that gambit material.  Rybka 2.3.2a had an Ultra Optimistic parameter which should get it to sacrifice.  Shredder Classic 4 comes with a Kamikaze version.  Stockfish 2.3.1 has an aggressiveness parameter.   Spark 1.0 has a kingattack parameter.  Toga Checkov was supposed to be tuned for gambit play.  Tao was a free Chessbase engine which had a wild style.  Homer comes with a Tal personality.

Do you know if there are some settings out there to make a gambit style engine out of Rybka 4.1?
