We're getting too deep into book now for the statistics to be definitive, but I would have played the much more common (played about 80% of the time) 10...Be6.  10...Bg4 is played about 10% of the time.

Novelty move.  Critter played e3 here.  It was just a 5+2 game so don't have second thoughts; you did way more analysis than Critter did.
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-06-24 03:08
Thanks Nelson, 12.Nd2 is clearly best (black easily equalizes after e3), computers have problems understanding it. Engines want to play 12...a6 but evaluations go downhill the deeper you analyze.
Parent - - By deka (****) [ee] Date 2011-06-24 07:23
I played 12.Nd2 because I wanted to keep as much material on the board as possible and not to let you to increase draw chances by exchanging.
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2011-06-24 14:39
That is good to follow that principal for closed games. Another thing to remember is to have a good square to return to so you don't get passive. In this case you will.

Will get passive or will have a good square?

> I played 12.Nd2 because I wanted to keep as much material on the board as possible and not to let you to increase draw chances by exchanging.

I wish some day I could say something like that, I would also have played 12.Nd2! but my explanation would be along the lines of "and when I excluded e3, the engine went crazy with the evals, so I cross-checked the variations with the other engines, and at the start, all of them were unimpressed, showing very low values for white, but eventually, I could find variations that would make Nd2 the favorite move of all other engines, and eventually get fail lows for all moves! So that an engine would start with a score of 0.07, but after refuting its black defenses it would end with a 0.40 score! This position was terrible for engines, but I discovered it too late" :yell:

Which demonstrates in closed positions general considerations often work as well as concrete details. I'm glad we have an anti-computer position, because lets me to fight on equal terms with opponents with better hardware and more experiences.
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-06-24 22:04
I'm not, being weak OTB I can be blind to an obvious move all engines miss.
- By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-06-23 23:50
