I haven't posted here recently, but some of you might remember me from a couple of years back when I introduced my Tarrasch Chess GUI here. The goal of the Tarrasch Chess GUI, then and now, is to be the easiest to use chess GUI available. The first version of Tarrasch (Tarrasch V1), has been well received even though I took some rather alarming and dramatic shortcuts with it (no variation trees, no proper file handling). In some ways, I can claim these shortcuts made a lot of sense, since it has taken months of effort for me to fix them; A version of Tarrasch without these shortcuts, indeed with very good variation tree, comment and .pgn support will be available soon, this is Tarrasch V2.
You can read much more about Tarrasch V2 on my website triplehappy.com, and more specifically my blog, triplehappy.wordpress.com.
At present I am offering interested people an opportunity to see a preview of Tarrasch V2. This is a nearly complete, lightly tested version. I call it an "alpha" (i.e. pre beta) version. Again, you can read about it, and request a copy, on my blog.
One of the reasons for making it available is that I am hoping to get some community testing. I am hoping someone here, with a legal Rybka 4 licence might participate. I have a user on the blog claiming that Rybka 4 does not work, but since he admits to using a "copy [of Rybka 4] given to him by a friend" I don't really want to engage with him.
Since very little about the interaction between GUI and engine has changed since V1, it would be quite helpful if someone can simply test Tarrasch V1, which is hosted as a download here on RybkaChess.
Thanks.

Mr. Forster it is good to see you again! I am a fan of Tarrasch GUI!
rybka 4 works fine & the 1 cpu version has been my default tarrasch engine for some time. most likely the user you are referring to is simply an idiot.
i would love to test v2, i'll PM you my email.

Thanks for this. And thanks for the support and encouragement on previous occasions. One day I was doing a little vanity googling and came across this on a Hiarcs forum, posted by your good self;
"i say this practically every time a discussion about chess GUI comes up, but someone needs to higher bill forster (tarrasch GUI) & give him a bucketload of money. ive never had an easier experience with any chess GUI than his, & it does what its supposed to do perfectly. not flawless, of course, but excellent. you're up & running in a minute, literally, from the moment you click the download link. and that's one guy just messing around for fun."
Needless to say, of all the things I've ever read on the internet, this suggestion, in particular the bit about someone giving me a bucketload of money, is the one I agree with most :-)

one think i think would be nice to include, since tarrash is primarily made for the casual chess game (imo anyway) is pre-move of some sort -- don't know if that's in v2 or not.
Sorry, not sure what pre-move is. Could you please elaborate a little ?
pre-move is used often in internet blitz chess to gain time advantage & is at least psychologically convenient against computer opponents who will take still take unnecessary time to make obvious moves (like captures or recaptures). so if i have rybka vs me set at 60 minutes/game (which i never would) instead of waiting 3 minutes for it to make a capture or move i know is coming, i can just pre-move the recapture or response, read the times, then when it does make its move let it continue to think on it's next one & carry on.
hi bill & thanks for the test copy -- while it seems to load pgn's fine, i think it'd be nice if it could paste them from text. for example, if i look up a game on chessgames.com, my usual route is to simply C&P the pgn & paste it to the GUI, instead of downloading it, browsing for it, & loading it.
i also think there should be a stop/start kibitzer button.

Thanks for your comments. I nearly added a stop/start kibitzer button at the last minute. I would have done so if I had a decent 16x16 pixel graphic at hand. I will definitely do it before my final V2 release.
Note that you can go to chessgames.com, copy the text of a game, and paste it into Tarrasch. At that stage it is a comment (blue text). But you can go Edit>Promote comment to variation and presto, the comment becomes moves. Is that good enough or do you need it to be easier?
[Edit later: actually strike that, I will change it so that if you paste something that looks like a game, with or without ["pgn-tags"], into an empty board, it will *automatically* promote it from comment to moves, thanks for getting me thinking about this].

awesome! i don't know how you'd do such a thing, but my primary analysis GUI (aquarium) does manage -- if you paste chess moves, even if not PGN, it recognizes them as such. i find it very convenient.
Will someone pls send me the protocol or procedure to use when I'm using Tarrasch GUI to play Black in a Set Up Position. If possible, pls reply to guycoffee@hotmail.com
I have my clocks set for 5 min. moves. Isn't this an adequate enough time for the Klibetz engine or Rybka to provide the best options available. My main prob is when I flip the board so black is on the bottom of the screen, it appears that the Rybka engine thinks my Black pawns are on White's 2d rank.
Lastly, I'll ask if anyone knows of any good websites/blogs that discuss computer chess.
Sorry for all the ?s.
In anticipation of receiving a reply< I kindly thank the Respondent. From a neophyte trying to learn how to use Tarrasch with Stockfish.
