Good afternoon.  I purchased rybka 2.3.2a mp version recently.  I ran a game of myself against rybka and when we got to 4 piece ending the game just ended unexpectedly.  Is there an error/issue with 2.3.2a mp and nalimov usage?  I have rybka set to use nalimov tablebases frequently.  Please advise.

Which interface (GUI) are you using? While you were playing yourself against the program, what happened exactly when it ended unexpectedly?

In case you used Fritz and if you mean, the engine stopped when a 4-piece position was reached (while the interface remained), than in that case it is normal. By default, the Fritz interface takes control of a game if tablebases are available and a tbs. position is reached, and continues alone using them. In that case, the engine itself doesn't participate anymore, so to speak :-) That happens also if engines are used which cannot access tablebases, themselves.

But it is swichtable: In Fritz, press F3 for the engine selection, and there is a checkbox which controls if the GUI uses tbs. or not. I think you should restart Fritz to let that change come into effect if you want to change it.

(I do not have an assumption for other interfaces and I do not have the mp version.)

I'm using Fritz8 GUI.  The problem is, when i used Rybka 2.3.1 engine the tbs' worked just fine.  When it got the end game and it found the table, i could see in the processing window that it was doing specific moves right away.  When i installed 2.3.2a mp engine, when the game found the engine, the game just stopped.  I couldn't continue making any further moves, either myself or forcing rybka to move.  The game just completely stopped, you couldn't make any further moves.  I had to start a new game.  I have "use tablebases" checked in my Load Engine window.  I haven't changed any settings or made any different settings from 2.3.1, all i did was just load a new engine and this occured.  I don't think your answer explains this situation.  I did read somewheres a post about 2.3.2a having issues with Tablebases that's why the "never" option was put into the new engine but i can't find that post anywhere.

You are right, in that case my previous anwer doesn't explain that (it was only my best guess based on the previous information). I am sorry that I don't have more ideas to help. It certainly sounds like a bug. I can only comment that with the Rybka 2.3.2a SINGLE engine version and with the Fritz 8 GUI which I have too, I am using 4- and some 5-piece tbs. without problems, with different Nalimov usage settings.

(I have an updated version of the Fritz 8 interface, from May 18th, 2006. Although I doubt that it could be a GUI problem... but who knows?)

Lots of people, myself included, have spent a lot of time using Rybka 2.3.2a with the F8 GUI and 3-4-5-6 man TBs without problems. It works fine on all TB settings. Obviously as you move toward the use frequently setting, there is a greater chance of weakening the program in game play or analysis and even losing on time in game play situations. This is normal for engines in general, not just Rybka. You should recheck your installation and look for other causes. The thousands of people using TBs with R2.3.2a can't all be just lucky.

Hi,

this sounds strange - maybe some sort of a GUI issue. There are no known Rybka bugs which could explain this. If you don't get a satisfactory explanation here, feel free to contact Convekta customer support (info@chessok.com).
