Just out of curiosity. Do you have a corr. chess rating?
Parent - By RoepStoep (**) [nl] Date 2011-03-16 13:17
No, I actually haven't played that much correspondence chess before. I have been following this forum for quite a while, also enjoying the games played here, and decided to give it a shot myself.

As this line seems to clearly favour White. I have challened the author of The Sniper, Charlie Storey, to a game. He is playing the Black side. You can follow it here http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1263559264/103#103

It seems his book is busted in correspondence play... I wonder what the database of Nelson Hernandez says about this opening?
Parent - By Nelson Hernandez (Gold) [us] Date 2011-04-09 18:41
Novelty move was 8...Qa5.  The novelty game was Sadvakasov-Dougherty, 1-0, 34th World Open, 2006.06.30.  It's difficult to characterize black's play here in the opening other than "unconventional".  Time and again he avoids the #1 move in my book and plays playable moves that rank lower.

I'll follow that thread, thank you. I'm curious how he would play for black after Bxc3, as I'm willing to play that position from the white side any time.

Me to! Nf6 is clearly bad allowing Bh6! I am not sure teh alternative Qa5 is much better. It will be interesting.

I'm really sorry, my computer broke down with serious hardware issues, maybe I fried the poor bastard by playing this game... I've already ordered a new system with an AMD Phenom II X4 955, which should improve the quality of my analysis considerably by the way :), but this doesn't arrive until next week. I hope you understand, I'll try to be up and moving as soon as possible

White is clearly better here. My game v the author of The Sniper book FM Charlie Storey did not end. He refused to play on in a position where I had a nice advantage. GM Gawain Jones is annotating that game on www.chesspublishing.com I will also send him this game when it is over. He told me that he thinks the dxc5 line is the biggest test of this system.

For those of you that can not see the game as you are not subscribers here is the game with my notes. It would not be fair to show the notes GM Gawain Jones added without his permission.

It's short analysis, but in my IDeA, I have white as already practically winning by move 9.
Parent - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2011-04-16 10:56 Edited 2011-04-16 10:59
I think you are right. OTB the Sniper maybe a good surprise weapon. In correspondence Chess it is at best dubious. As Gawain points out in his notes 7.Qb4! is the key variation.
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2011-04-16 11:52
btw the Sniper Author is still crying about it here http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1301967801/60

if we get a rematch maybe we can join forces :)
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2011-04-16 21:31
His talk is quite amusing--I wonder if he actually takes himself seriously, or has an odd sense of humor?

The thought of joining forces in competition naturally gets my adrenaline going and my mind flowing with excitement...but alas, there wouldn't likely be time for quite awhile, especially since I'll be getting married in June. :-)
