I am not sure what it was with myself ... it seems to work when i pointed it to my aquarium rybka folder.   When i pointed it to the other folder for my playchess uci engines it did not work.

Fair enough! I don't have playchess, so I can't test it.

Ok, thanks. I'll edit the release notes.

Vas,

I upgraded to Deep Rybka 4.1 SSE42 x64.exe.  The process was easy.

I'll be testing a number of things, but so far I can confirm that the "non display of analysis when pulled from hash" bug  (I pointed it out to you in this thread  - http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?pid=259107) has been fixed.  I tested this position, taking the steps mentioned in the thread:

r3r1k1/1p1bqpp1/1b1p1nnp/8/p2PP1P1/3BBN1P/PP1NQ3/1K4RR w - - 0 19

where the bug with Deep Rybka 4 SSE42 x64.exe shows up 100% of the time.  After a few runs, Deep Rybka 4.1 SSE42 x64.exe shows the bug 0% of the time.

Thanks

Can anyone give me an idiot proof guide to downloading and installing 4.1?
Parent - - By Nick (*****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 20:40 Edited 2011-03-13 20:42
Mark, the file attached to this post is called Rybka41Update.txt, it is really the exe file, renamed to txt, as you are having a problem downloading exe files I believe.

Steps you should follow:

1) Download Rybka41Update.txt which is attached to this post (right-click, save)
2) Find out where on your disk you downloaded it to, and rename it to Rybka41Update.exe (right-click, rename)
3) Run it (double click on it)
4) Accept license
5) In the input box put the location of where your Rybka exe files are (eg. c:\users\mark\chess\rybka).  The names of the Rybka files are like "Rybka 4 x64.exe" you may need to search for them
6) Press install button
7) Now any Rybka 4 exes you have, will also have their Rybka 4.1 versions in the same directory

Let me know of any problems.

That's pretty good Nick, but I'm sure I could find an idiot who couldn't follow these instructions...
Parent - - By Nick (*****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 20:47
Hehe, according to the location finder of this forum Mark lives about 15 miles away from me in the UK, so one way or another, we will get him going

Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 22:51
I gave it my best shot but still not working.

Thanks anyway for your help.

Spent to many hours trying, now lost all interest.

Sometimes these things are not as smooth as we would like.  Well, if you get the energy to revisit just let me know.  I'm in Aylesbury at least once a month.
Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:01
it's odd, i get to number 5 and then number six but once you press install it last for about 2 seconds then closes down.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:03
I must be not putting in the correct files for number 5 on your list.

> I must be not putting in the correct files for number 5 on your list.

I think possibly that is true - perhaps we should focus on that.  The install/update process does only take a few seconds.

So do you have Rybka or Deep Rybka?

If you have Rybka can you locate the file "Rybka 4 x64.exe" on your harddisk? ("Deep Rybka 4 x64.exe" for Deep Rybka)  Use "search" .. depends what OS you are using to how search looks .. what OS are you using "Windows XP" or Vista or 7?

Basically if you can put the directory of where your Rybka executables are into the updater .. you will magically get 4.1 versions placed in that same directory.
Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:25
I have Deep Rybka, i'm running windows 7

It seems Rybka is on my D drive not C drive.

Had a go at that but still no good.
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) [us] Date 2011-03-14 15:15
Mark, here is a picture of what is in my sse42 directory where I had my old R4 files.  Does yours look anything like this one?
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-14 15:33
KeoKi010, The only one that looks the same is the last one which is in my download section of my computer.
Parent - By Vempele (Silver) [fi] Date 2011-03-14 15:50
What are your Rybka 4 files named, then?
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) [us] Date 2011-03-14 18:00
search for your Rybka "*.exe" files, place the update .exe file in the same directory.  Click on it 2x and it should update the Rybka files.  If that doesn't work, can you post a picture of your Rybka directory. If you don't know where the exe Rybka files are look in the gue engines folder for the gui you are using.
Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-14 20:48
God knows well these file are?
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-15 08:07
Thanks Uly, i now have a screen that looks just like the one KeoKi010 posted. What happens next?
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2011-03-15 08:10
Put the engines in the folder you would normally put them at. Then install them to your GUI.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-15 09:01
OOPS! I don't know were they are. When i doulble click on one of them say the x64 version it asks me to extract the files when that is done nothing else happens.

Sorry guys i know i'm not helping much here.
Parent - By keoki010 (Silver) [us] Date 2011-03-15 14:32
Mark, if you are using ChessBase gui or Fritz it sticks them in a hidden folder. Do a search that includes the hidden folders.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-15 21:17
Sorry to be a pain but all my helpers have gone?
Parent - - By keoki010 (Silver) [us] Date 2011-03-15 22:00 Edited 2011-03-15 22:20
Ok, lets start here.
1. What gui are you using?  ChessBase or Aquarium
2. Search all folders on your hard drive, whichever one you think you have the gui on, for *Rybka*.exe Include the hidden folders if you are using ChessBase
3. Write it down exactly as it shows up, ie. C:\user\mark\etc. etc.
4. Post the results to us.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-15 22:46
I can answer the first question-Aquarium.

I will search for the files and report back.
Parent - By Permanent Brain (*****) Date 2011-03-16 07:51
It should be pointed out that by "search for the files" it is meant that an automated search function of the software should be used, like the search function of the Windows Explorer (NOT the Internet Explorer)... Also, if examples like *rybka*.exe are given, it is meant that you type in these asterisks just as shown, to make sure it finds all variations of Rybka executeables similar to "Deep Rybka 32-bit w32.exe" etc.etc.

For comparison, with the Fritz 12 GUI and in Windows XP, the Fritz 12 exe is in C:\program files\common files\ChessBase\Engines\ (the directory names may be slightly different on an english Windows system as I try to translate from a german Windows here). - But that's just one of several possibilities where a Fritz GUI keeps engines... maybe UCI engines like Rybka are in another place.

Good luck anyway.

P.S. A complete patch installer tool which can retrieve the original installation paths, would solve this problem entirely. I guess that's what ChessBase is using with F12 update number 20, for the Rybka 4 engine.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2011-03-15 23:45
Didn't they mail you the engine?

It's a good thing there is no correlation between CC chess skills and computer skills!
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-03-16 01:50
He got the engine, now he has problems installing it...

I guess his Rybka 4 came pre-installed, so he doesn't know how to do it.
Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-16 07:54
Your so right my computer skills are rubbish.
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:19
Had one go. This time a small square black box came up but still no luck.
Parent - - By Nick (*****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:21

> This time a small square black box came up but still no luck.

Yes that DOS window (black box) should appear momentarily, that means it is working.

1) Which directory are you pointing the updater at?

2) What Rybka executables are in that directory before and after the update process?  You can use "file manager" to find out ...

Thanks for your patience !
Parent - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:27
But it still shuts down right after that.

All that comes up on my D drive is Aquarium engine 64x
Parent - - By Mark Eldridge (****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:32
Still no good.

Going to sleep now up in 3 hours.
Parent - - By Nick (*****) [gb] Date 2011-03-13 23:36
Ok sleep well, would like to know answers to these two questions ..

1) Which directory are you pointing the updater at?

2) What Rybka executables are in that directory before and after the update process?  You can use "file manager" to find out ...
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-03-14 01:47 Edited 2011-03-14 22:47
Maybe someone could upload "Rybka 4.1" somewhere and give the link to Mark, after he downloads it, delete the link.

It's obvious he has Rybka 4 legally so I wouldn't see a problem.
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2011-03-14 01:55
Wouldn't it be easier to just email it to him?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2011-03-14 02:46
Oh, yeah! I'm not used to using email (and, possibly the whole Persistent Hash issue would have been avoided if I did check my email when offered to be Rybka 3 Beta tester), I never thought of that.

Do you know his email? Otherwise, creating a link and sending it by Private Message is still faster.
