No one will beat the cluster until they can do better than make moves like 9.Ne2? giving up maybe 30 decipawns, giving Rybka a perfect shot to follow a line that has never lost before.  If books were up to standard then Rybka could show its superiority much later in the game, which would be more flattering to the engine, I think.

> 30 decipawns

You mean 30 centipawns.

Yes, 9. Ne2 loses about 0.30, but Spike swaps off bishops first and then plays 10. Ne2, which is also R4's preferred book move.

I have in my IDeA that the real mistake was 11.a4, though it has not been investigated thoroughly.

I would trust well-developed IDeA over my book any day.

nice :) I totally forgot that the tournament starts today :)

I'm playing in Ingelheim's championship today, the last 3 rounds (rapid). So far I'm at 3.5/4, playing against the strongest participant in the next round. maybe I can write later on how I played there :)

Btw., Christoph got his diploma today (he got an 1,1). Need to change his profile on our website, should I change it to "out of work"? ;)

What does 1,1 mean?
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2010-11-26 23:37
best is 1,0 and the worst 4,0 . So it's almost perfect :) (it says "excellent" or something like that)

btw., I finished 3rd today, well ok... I didn't play the best chess in my life, but the other guys at the championship weren't that bad either.
Parent - By dragon49 (****) [us] Date 2010-11-27 03:48
This is the opposite of the U.S. system.  When I was in college, back when Dinasours were walking around, 4.0 (A) was a perfect grade point average.

I'm glad you and your brother are doing well.

I have to admit that Rybka Cluster looked worse in the opening, but somehow Spike was way too slow to take advantage of lack of pieces protecting black's Kingside and got smacked.  It is possible that this is just chess above a human level, but I would be interested to see what Rybka Cluster evaluation was at say in this position after black Kf7.  I found a few obscure games played where this position came up but nothing important.  Maybe white simply doesn't have anything!  However I would have liked to see how Rybka Cluster would have played against another very strong hardwared Rybka 4 if h4 was played instead of a4 (which simply doesn't seem to fit the position).  I mean a4 Qa4 0-0!  Qxc2 Nf4 ... this really looks like a dangerous position for black, sort of a poison pawn type of position where things can really go bad very quickly and catastrophically.

Junior played h4 in this position (book move) in the Leiden tournament 6 months ago and lost rather badly.

Hi Jeroen ... great to hear from you.  I was in your beautiful city Amsterdam and just got back to London yesterday.  I looked very quickly on my laptop at this position after h4 and white play Qa4 and 0-0 ... if black queen takes pawn with white on Nf4 it seems that black has to be careful.  I am not sure how Junior played but after Nf4 all kinds of sacs seem possible but with my laptop it is hard to check out brute force variations.  But after Nf4 if say black plays Ne7 ... even Nxe6 by white seems playable.  Usually if that is the case then there might be some hidden potential there somewhere ... and if there is I am sure you know about it already

Ah Amsterdam, yes, that is a very nice city :-). Maybe next time you can visit Hans, he lives in the neighborhoud of Amsterdam. He knows all the nice places there.

Don't remember exactly how the Junior-Rybka game went after h4, Junior followed it up with h4-h5 but never got any counterplay.
