This will be a friendly game to help Scott Nichols form FICGS to help adjust to the Rybka forum. Of course I'm going to be an underdog but this should be fun. Good luck Scott, I'll play the game here because this will be the place. You will play the tournament.

My first move will be 1.e4
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-14 00:43
Scott to make your move just post in your reply like for example, 1.e4
Parent - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-14 00:46
Scott this is just a friendly to help you with making moves and stuff. So don't worry about time forfeit. I'm usually making 80 to 90 % of my moves within a day. So you can check this and make your moves accordingly.

Ok, I've got this far. Thanks for setting this up Jimmy.

I reply 1. ...e5

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3

The next thing to know is that after a couple of moves or so. People like to see a broad so if you post a FEN in the post you can bring up a broad. I use Fritz 12 GUI and I just hit Copy Position in the upper right. And hit Ctrl+V to paste, You don't have to do it every move. But every few or so.

The opening phase of the games here go fairly quickly. Its not uncommon for the 4 or 5 moves a day until people are out of there books.

Hehehe don't you worry good ol' Scotty is known to be a quick mover at FICGS ;-)

Geez?

If you want to left justify your post use the "post" at the bottom left.  It will bring the post to the left margin.
Parent - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-14 18:39
I made my move to the left. I'll try to keep this organized.

BTW I would disregard my record on FICGS. I was having hardware problems so I had to resign those games you see in my record

Another tip... click on "Lookup" on the board, in the opening it will bring you to the ChessOK opening tree mode... in 6 man or less endings it will lookup the ending.

Thanks keoki! That is a new tool for me.

Now its time for the finally thing you need to know about this forum. You are allowed to offer conditional moves. Usually they are offer to speed the game a long a bit. In this case you offer conditional moves. On force moves (checks and captures), or obvious moves were there is only one good move to make. Of course if someone offers you a conditional you can choose to accept it and make the next move or you can decline and make another move instead.

My example for this is for this move now.

If ..6.dxc6 then 7.d3

So you can accept and make your 7th move or decline and make another 6th move. Of course your only other choice is bxc6 and I doubt you will play this.

That is a good idea to have "if" moves.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Be7 6. Bxc6 dxc6 7. d3 Bd6!?

I put the "!?" on there. Is this allowed to make it kinda more fun...?
Parent - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-15 20:12
Yes it is fine to have commentary signs. I like to do them every once in a while. Now I'll give you a little reasoning behind my move. Well the Lopez has a good standing with all normal lines for black. I choice the delay exchange. Because it changes the character of the game without going into the regular lines of the normal exchange which look to be in good shape. As Paul(National12) would say. Lets add to opening theory . Plus I didn't think you have play this line very much.
Parent - By keoki010 (Silver) [us] Date 2010-11-15 21:54
Hey guys one other comment. If you single click the piece it shows all legal moves for that piece, then you can single click the destination. It won't send the epd using "lookup" however. You can make one or ten moves this way but the post will not retain the moves. If you have a pgn in your clipboard however you can paste it into the ChessOK opening utility and use it. It is kind of like a variation board. You can check out a move.

I agree that changes the game away from the main lines. I actually have 2 corr. games with this line. One continued 7. ...Qd6, the other 7. ...Bg4. That is kinda the reason behind the commentary on my seventh move to also enter uncharted waters.

To expand a little; I had two previous games in this line precisely for the reasons you named. One with White and one Black. The Ruy Lopez enjoys such a good reputation as a fighting defense, that I don't see why it is not adopted more. All I ever see in response to 1. e4 is c5 these days. At least about 90% of the time. It's probably a phase as I think there are still many very good lines untested in most openings out there.

On our game, I compliment you on a nice opening.
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-16 21:03
Well I choice this opening also on the grounds. That I wanted to do battle in a position were human input is going to be important. As it is more of a close game and manoeuvrings is going to be important.
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-16 23:15

10.Ne3 was an alternative, the evals on lookup are often nonsense.
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-11-17 00:04
I agree with that. I usually just look at the wins and loses for human games for lookup. The engines want to play h3, within a few moves after 10.Ne3 and doesn't look as useful then.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2010-11-17 00:14
you mean after 10.Ne3 Be6 11.a4 0-0 12.h3,however i would not play that.i would most likely have played 12.Re1.however this is sidetracking you.nothing wrong with move you played.

i know this is a very very friendly game but i do not understand 12.Be3.it appears to me that white has suddenly decided to go into defensive mode.

So is 12.c3 the best move? It look fine to me so far. I guess maybe this is looks more like a draw than me trying to win. Its far form over, I do have some interesting moves left even in this line.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2010-11-18 10:32
i was expecting 12.dxe5.
