I closed the previous vote because they were incomplete and added new options.
Vote for more interface is the best take advantage of the capabilities of engines especially Deep Rybka 4.

I'd like to see this poll repeated after the next generation of Aquarium hits the street. It uses far less system resources than does Fritz- and offers more significant GUI options. What is not consistent in this poll is the admixture of databases along with GUI's. You need to have two separate polls or suggest more than one vote allowed.

 I have both in fact although the block of wood does not attack my feet from under the bed, nothing like sharp claws on bare skin to wake you up first thing in the morning :yell::twisted:

On the GUI debate I like the Fritz\Chessbase stuff, I tend to use Chessbase 10 mainly (may get CB 11) I also like the Shredder Classic for its simplicity .... As for Aquarium, a wonderful concept and very powerful but poor in the ease of use department, the same IMO can be said for chess asisstant. I still use the origunal Aquarium at times but am STILL having to wait for the 4.06 update before I give the 2010 version another go. I do not have the time these days to learn the in and outs so need it to be a painless experience lol

:razz: Well I have a 120mm fan keeping the chipsets and memory cool so if Gizmo did attempt anything of the pissing kind then the said fan would remove any offending item

Gizmo, had that cat musk spraying over everything! And it didn't bother you one bit.  Well, hell, why not move that block of wood right into the kitty litter! :yell:

(ps: How can you possibly give an informed  opinion on a producted you stopped updating two years ago? What is that about? Have you been stepping into the ring lately without head padding? No wonder you don't mind Gizmo pissing on your mobo! :yell:)

So not true, I bought Aquarium 2010 as soon as it appeared and used it but it is far from user friendly plus tried all the updates to 4.05 STILL!! awaiting 4.06 ... It seems it is going to get more complicated although some basics are supposed to be easier but we shall see ..... I have A2010 installed on my Windows 7 drive awaiting the update but at the moment mainly run the XP64 drive so A3 gets used from time to time

>Have you been stepping into the ring lately without head padding?

This I must admit is true  on wednesday just gone I had to get in the ring with no headguard!! (actually never used one) and was holding the pads for Tania (Thai-Boxing warrior  queen lmao) whom I simply thought to be a nurse but it was pointed out to me that at night she is a stripper/lap dancer/pole dancer which to be honest explains her chest measurements  It did take me a few minutes to regain my composure HEY!! it`s a tough job but someone has to do it :razz::twisted::yell:

Don't be so cynical. Here is a tutorial in understanding the concept behind the fat lady singing. The question arises whether it is really over when the fat lady sings, or has it, rather,  just begun.

I think it is quite obviously Fritz that has the upper hand- taking into consideration that a great majority are voting for  Fritz/Chessbase and combining that number with Fritz GUI, since there is only one vote per person- that, at present, gives Fritz approximately 46% of the vote.

Frankly what they need to address is ease of use in my view.

+1

It has enough features and I have enough resources, so what sid mentions wouldn't be a factor.

When I first started working with Photoshop- it was essential to get clear instruction into the use of the software. The way a tutorial is presented can go a long way in helping users cultivate an enthusiasm for gaining insight into, and  learning how to use the software. I enjoyed so much studying trainings presented by Deke McClelland. It made learning fun.

Aquarium's developers need to learn how to present a training manual that does pretty much the same thing. They obviously know the material. But, I  don't think they do a good job in  presenting tutorial material as educators. And, I think it also helps if English is not their second language.
Parent - By RFK (Gold) Date 2010-09-23 07:01 Edited 2010-09-23 07:23
This is not the fault of the software. It is as all sophisticated software demands- clear and concise and well organized training manuals and tutorials. To the person writing the manual and/or tutorial- is sounds great! Because, they already know the material. But to someone just tuning in- it sucks in its organization of material and approach. :yell:

Inshort- Don't throw the baby out with the bath water! Really!
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) Date 2010-09-23 07:27
But Photoshop is about art, and learning new ways of art is fun. Chess is just a mathematical problem about finding the best move in every position, and that can be done easier in a different interface.

Would you use Photoshop if you could use MSPaint to make outstanding works of art already?

Form the other side, chess is about analysis methods, the tutorials you're talking about would be about how to use the interface, not about chess.

And I'll say it again, Aquarium is like if they built a new car where you steer with the pedals and brake with the wheel, its ease of use won't change if you add more manuals and tutorials.
Parent - By RFK (Gold) Date 2010-09-23 07:57
I disagree-

Learning any software that interests you can be invigorating and fun if its done right. I know a lot of people who were intimidated by Photoshop and end up using something less intensive to avoid the steep learning curve. But once I introduced them to certain of Lynda.com trainings and specific trainers, that fear evaporated exponentially.

If I want to have the best in a computing experience for running chess games- and decide to build my own machine to meet that need- I  have absolutely no issue with  learning the hardware and knowing the manual to make that experience happen, and it is fun! Even when things go nuts.

If I want to have the very best in a chess experience,  and chose to utilize certain software enhancements to make that  experience happen-

yeah! I'm going to want to learn as much as I can to make that happen- But if the manual doesn't really answer that need and  only leaves me frustrated-I might get really angry.

And that is what I am hearing on this forum. Not just frustration but also anger over not getting what they need. P.S per instruction.

>> If I want to have the very best in a chess experience,  and chose to utilize certain software enhancements to make that  experience happen-

Could you elaborate about that chess experience that other software doesn't provide?

Perhaps you just enjoy learning, and Aquarium is a new challenge for you, but not all people have fun learning a new interface, they have fun with chess, having to learn it how to use an interface is an obstacle, not a bridge.

And stop with the Photoshop analogies, Photoshop can do things that no other picture program can do, so learning how to use it is a bridge to gaining new abilities for art, Aquarium only has IDEA and trees, but people can be successful without IDEA, and trees aren't something that is NEEDED (e.g. you can be fine without using trees).

But it would be useful that people could use those features with ease, I think time invested in improving the interface would be much better then having a video where someone teaches the 20 commands you have to do to do something simple. Problem is, the developers are very happy with breaking with the wheel and steering with he pedals, and they're sure it's a superior method to the "old way", so I don't see any change happening.

It is cool that you like to learn about software.  That means Aquarium is great for you.  I don't like to learn about software, I like to use software to learn about other things or be productive in other things.  Neither way of looking at it is wrong and it is a good thing we have different choices.

I don't know if we will ever see the "perfect" gui, which is why I am glad we have choices.

I Agree. The software should be a means to an end, a tool. User interfaces should be intuitive, fast, and effective. I think software developers greatly undervalue this point.

I've used all the GUI's mentioned in this poll and my vote goes to Shredder, however Arena is not far behind, and with a new release rumoured to be just around the corner, with support for Gaviota Tablebases among other things, it could easily become the new no. 1 in my book. Especially if they finally relent and add Shredder-FEN support for Chess960.

I voted Shredder but I would actually say Shredder for playing and most analysis and chessbase for database and research and annotation stuff.

I still have never gotten Aquarium actually work.

When you say Fritz do you mean the latest version with a Ribbon interface? I find the ribbon interface a bit intimidating at first. I somehow like the older Fritz 11 interface.
Parent - - By mindbreaker (****) Date 2010-09-23 13:56
I prefer F11 also but I think there is a lot of rooms for improvement.  I think there is no 5 star interface the best is barely 3 stars.
