If you have 4 gigs of Ram in xp64 should you allocate as much as possible or someone was saying 128mb is key for all time controls. Thanks for replys and opinions...
This is with 2.3.2a.....

Hi,

Opinions very greatly.

Chessbase GUIs will handle up to 2GB of Hashtable.

Use all you can without activating page file swapping.

I use 832MB, a good friend uses 16MB, so there you go. :)

We both use Rybka 2.3.2a

832 MB is cut down to 512 by Rybka - she only takes powers of 2.

Hi,

The Fritz Gui list many Hashtable sizes, like 1, 4, 10, 12, 16 on and on.

My question is don't the know that the engine will only take powers of 2 ?

Thanks

Rybka takes only powers of 2 - other engines use what they get.

Hi,

Thanks for the information.
I have changed my hash to 1024MB, up from 832MB.
I play long games on playchess, made the change at ELO 2617.

There were many discussions about that in this forum.
With 4 GB of RAM you should use 2 GB hash as an absolute maximum - btw. if you set hash to 3 GB Rybka will only take 2 GB.
I prefer to use 1/4 of total RAM for hash as a maximum, but on Windows XP x64 2 GB still works, when you have got 4 GB in total.
In case you are using Vista x64, using 2 GB hash on a 4 GB computer might get dangerous. I can see that on one of my computers that currently runs Vista x64 - it has 6 GB of RAM - when using 2 GB of hash it uses 3.9 GB of RAM (it is an 8 cores x5355). As soon as your computer starts using virtual memory (swapping RAM contents to harddisk) performance drops extremely.
In very short games, large hash sizes can have very bad effects - for Bullet i recommend to use no more than 256 MB - else there is the chance to loose on time.
