Anyone know why the Rybka Chess site has no obvious mention of R4; it's almost as if it doesn't exist.  It just looks as though it is frozen in time at the point where R3 was launched.

Any ideas anyone?

Maybe because it is frozen in time????  I don't think it gets a lot of maintenance.

Felix went on strike after Rybka 4 was released and Mr. Rajlich hasn't visited the site since 2008, when he fell off the face of the Earth.

well yes, Vas didn't write up the FAQ and so on yet, I planned to add something for the opening book, but didn't do that yet. as for Rybka 4, there were more updates than one may think, but the most apparent one is the purchase website. yes, I know, there should be much more...

IMHO the Rybka engine is the best. But we, or at least I, don't know if the Rybka website or engine are the top priorities for Vas or Felix. If not then it is quite reasonable and understandable why the delay(s). They have other responsibilities of more significance to them or their families. They have a right to set their own priorities. If they later become second best it is OK with them.

However, if the website or Rybka are their top priorities then one might note that the 'best' can only afford to be non-resposive as long as they stay the best. That is if they hope to avoid the the unfortunate fate of countless companies who were the best. (Became second best for a short time but were unable to overcome their reputation even when again offerring the best product.)

Thank goodness Rajlich is actually a nice guy.

I recently expressed exactly this sentiment to another software development person in an unrelated genre who had issued much fewer and much more frustrating updates.

I stated it close to the way that you stated it, as polite and as understanding as possible and trying to place myself in their shoes. I asked a simple question about the development process that was along the lines of whether or not the project was actively being worked on or if the company had issued other priorities or divided up developer time between other projects.

Well, the answer I got was that I was rude for asking, that they (this developer and the team he/she oversaw) had been working 10-15 hours a day 5-7 days a week with a team of 4 or 5 and how dare I imply otherwise. This person indicated I was ungrateful, disrespectful, and ignorant of standard practices of software development (which ironically I was trying to alleviate by asking questions).

Still periods of 6 months to a year have passed without significant updates, even without some changes that were very simple, highly desired, and certainly could not take more than a week (severely liberal estimate) to implement.

Luckily there is every indication that Vas is a good person and would not react this way at all. Still I've often encountered a lot of friction with developers so I must conclude that it is simply a mysterious world I will never understand unless I become a part of it myself.

Well, you could certainly replace the "I" with "we" above.  Everyone is looking for a logical explanation as to why there is no update, etc. and it just doesn't seem to exist.  Some things just defy explanation...

The mother is 21 years older than the child.
6 years from now, the mother will be 5 times as old as the child.
Solve and discover what Vas is up to and how he is tackling the cloning problem.

This reminds me of the 1990s film "Barton Fink", about a successful, socially-conscious Broadway playwright who goes to Hollywood expecting to write screenplays in the same vein as his plays, but is rapidly overwhelmed by the sheer commercialism, crassness and menace he encounters from film executives.  He assigned to write a script for a wrestling movie and suffers from a case of writer's block.  He watches rushes from a similar wrestling film and repeatedly observes a fat and ugly wrestler getting up from his stool, approach the camera and shout, "I WILL DESTROY YOU!!"  Later, he visits a community of writers and as he walks past their bungalows he can hear them drunkenly shouting and screaming inside their homes, suffering creative agonies.

Same problem here?  Vas may have a case of programmer's block.  Rybka has become like that fat wrestler.  I WILL DESTROY YOU!!

> yes, I know, there should be much more...

There mustn't be very much about R4. But Informations about R4 should be on the home page, and a link to more R4 informations.
But now all wie can find here is:
"Rybka 3 User Area" (Aha)
"Here you can download Rybka 2.3.2a or purchase the latest (which??) Rybka version." and in the end with this link we find R4
FAQ about R2-versions
Rybka 3 book

Visitors will only find by chance, that there exists a Rybka 4, and only if they follow the link to the latest Rybka version.
All other texts only speak about R2 and R3.
Months after R4 had entered the scene.

We know, that there exists R4 :-)
But please immagine you enter the Microsoft Site and read about Windows98 and WindowsXP, and you have to search if you want to read about Windows7 because you have heard rumors that such an Operating System should exist.

Maybe they could skip over mentioning Windows Vista :-)

Anyways I agree about the Rybka website. Maybe a story could be put on the front page that says something like, "Rybka still at the top of the heap with Rybka 4".

Of course, months ago it had to be there. But as always, Felix is completely asleep.

I think of the last words in the Rocky Horror Picture Show:
And crawling
on the planets face
some insects
called the human race
lost in time
and lost in space
and meaning
