- - By Elderta (**) Date 2010-09-05 16:21
hi chess fans. I really need a help. I am playing a correspondence game and i reached this position:
1r4k1/6p1/1q2np1p/4nQ2/1rPpP1P1/3P3P/p1P3B1/B1R2RK1 w - - 8 34

white to play
after 8h of analysis in Arena, my 6 engines doesnt even find a common move. Worse, rybka 3 is sugesting the passive Kg1-h1, in a line where it moves too much the king. Can u give me a plan please?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-09-05 18:46
No, that would be cheating, play the game by yourself.

I'd feel terrible if I knew my opponent is getting outside help.
Parent - - By Eelco de Groot (***) Date 2010-09-06 16:41
Oh, I don't think it can hurt very much. Just one move. The position is bad. And using Rybka is like getting help as well I think. Not that Kg1-h1 from Rybka 3 seems to be very good. Don't want to pass up a chance to trash Rybka   Only one move really comes into question for Rainbow Serpent but if Elderta's opponent sees the score by any chance he will be pleased. Curious what the eval is from Rybka 3 or 4, a good test if they see Black ahead after a while ? My computer is not very fast so I don't think I'm giving him much advantage, will be difficult game anyway.

Eelco

It would not hurt in a game result perspective, but it would hurt ethically, I don't think Elderta's opponent is getting outside help, so by getting it the match becomes unfair (it doesn't matter if Elderta loses anyway, what matters is the unacceptable behavior).

The opponent should be able to win it if he got into this fine position not just by luck. Which makes it a bit hypothetical if this is really helping the poster but I suppose I don't care enough, sorry Vytron. The best move has changed by the way but I will not be posting it. Maybe in a week or so it does not matter anymore it would be nice to compare it maybe what Rybka makes of it. Curious what Rybka 4 does if the position is bad and everything loses alpha/beta does not really work so well anymore. But passive play seems not a good idea either.

You can see there were several Fail Highs (++ moves) that apparently were false Fail Highs, they did not lead to a new best move. This is a disadvantage of using PVs that are only Fail Highs, they may be inaccurate and the next PV search with a wider window must have failed low but you don't see that. This only becomes apparent when the search has gone back to 30.01 Rfd1 It is still iteration 30 so I assume this is what is intended to happen (assuming Shredder GUI is cooperating). At least that is how I interpret this output now, but maybe there is a bug I don't understand. I don't think I changed that part of the code.

That's "normal" behavior (as in, latest Stockfish does that), it was introduced by Rybka 3 (or I didn't notice any engine doing it before) because apparently it brings ELO points, but I hate it as it kills the engine for analysis. The engine rushes to get an alternative move ASAP, and doesn't care to tell the user what happened with the silent failing move (here, the user would have to force Rcd1 to know how it ended up, losing much more time than if the engine didn't hurry), that's why I suggested the Always Score Main Move feature in Rybka 4, hopefully the engines that do this aggressive approach of failing moves (that are growing in size, Naum and Critter also do it) implement an ASMM feature as well.
Parent - - By Eelco de Groot (***) Date 2010-09-09 19:30
Thanks for pointing out the similarities between some engines here Vytron, and comfirming Stockfish does it too. I see you carefully did not mention the clones  I still don't see how in this particular case, it is not a bug because really after a false Fail High here the engine should immediately return to the previous best move, but it doesn't. Very strange if they all do this

I built a new version, not with any changes after a Fail High but this one does nullmove a bit differently. It produces different moves which is mainly what I like about it, because it makes it a bit different from Stockfish. Apart from again false Fail Highs at large depths I don't see it do anything weird yet, but it really produces different best moves. As all moves appear to be losing I won't say it is anything significant. I'm glad the third attempt actually saw some differences in the output. Possibly a slowdown that will offset any benefits.

Eelco

In a surprising twist, this engine build 047 goes back to the very first best move Rf2. I'm not sure it means anything if all the moves are losing but it sure is different! Two false Fail Highs which muddy the picture but best move remains Rf2.

Just after I posted the above, a new line. I think I will stop now, iterations taking very long already:

we(my oponent and me), we dont care about where other is getting help. Vytron, i think this isnt the best argument 2 refuse a help, is it?

Well, if your opponent doesn't care, that's different. Though I find it weird, he challenged you, not Eelco, or the whole forum, etc. (I mean, at what point can you get assistance?, from move 1?, but, oh well).

best advice i can give is try different moves at decent depths and see what you come up with. I don't know think this tip is to unfair
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-09-06 13:24
Yeah, general tips should be fine. And for what I've seen "decent depth" can be as low as 11, provided the user knows what important positions to analyze and he analyzes enough of them.
