I know this is a topic for the "Chess" part of the forum and not the "Rybka" part, but I figured I would post here because this is what everyone reads.  I got Hiarcs 11.2 UCI via e-mail just a little while ago.  It is said that there are enhancements and changes in parameters, but how is the playing strength of this version compared with that of Hiarcs 11.1?  Also, how much in the way of bugs have been fixed?  For example, Hiarcs 11.1 is virtually useless on my machine because it often crashes or "hangs" in infinite analysis or deep position analysis, and it loses a number of games in engine-engine matches due to running out of time.  Have these problems been cured?

I would have thought people knew me to be intelligent enough not to post a question that has very easy, very obvious answers.  I asked for more specifics on what is new with Hiarcs 11.2 UCI.  Obviously I already knew of the topic on the Hiarcs site, which is just a copy of the e-mail I got earlier--I asked specific questions hoping that people who read these might have some answers since the Rybka part of the forum is the most-read part by far; I may still repost in the Rybka forum.

Anyway, none of my questions are addressed in the Hiarcs FAQ (if they were, I wouldn't have asked them here).  Have people noticed any improvement in the bugs that I mentioned?  Is Hiarcs 11.2 a playable engine now?  Can I actually use it without it crashing or running out of time or using up all of the system's resources even after exiting the Fritz 10 GUI?  Furthermore, is Hiarcs 11.2 noticeably stronger than Hiarcs 11.1 in early testing?

Sorry, I guess I'm just a bit perturbed that this was moved to the "Chess" part of the forum after I stated why I was asking in the "Rybka" part--I would have thought the rest of the answer to be obvious--the same people who do the stuff with Rybka also often experiment with other engines, including Hiarcs, especially in tests against Rybka, and some of them, e.g. Harvey, have probably been testing it a bit before the rest of us got the e-mail today.

As far as I can see H11.2 = H11.1 - key locking Hiarcs to a specific system configuration

Hi Mike,

I think you should check again.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

Yeah, as Harvey mentions, the key locking to a specific system configuration seems to be changed--at the very least, it's much more flexible.  As for the other problems of which I spoke, I have not noticed any hangs or time losses yet, but time will tell.

Hi,

Thanks. Please let us know if you do find any problems.

Thanks,

Harvey

ps I was going to reply to you yesterday but the thread vanished and then I realised it had been moved!

Thank you; are there any noticeable strength changes between Hiarcs 11.1 and Hiarcs 11.2?  What would you say is the elo difference between the two programs?

Hi,

I don't think you will notice a big jump in ELO.

The version is mainly some bug fixes and Vista enhancements and MP support. It should show a slight improvement.

The big jump in ELO will be in Hiarcs 12 which I hope will be released towards the end of the year.

BTW all Hiarcs 11 customers will receive a discount if they decide to purchase Hiarcs12.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

As I already stated, I am no longer into Hiarcs very much and after re-checking the program I donĀ“t see any significant changes over 11.1 except that it has no longer the key locking problem.

Not much about the changes anywhere, as far as I can tell. I guess the important stuff is the new key-system...

The problems you mention with 11.1, I don't have on my machines, at least loss on time is very rare, and hanging during long analysis I still have to see. But as we know, no computers behaves exactly in the same way. However, I see those tendencies with X54 sometimes.
