According to CCRL one of the strongest (maybe THE strongest) non-Rybka engine is Zap!Chess Zanzibar from Anthony Cozzie. Apparently he named his engine Zappa and Zap!Chess ist the commercial name under which you will find it for sale at Chessbase. In the Chessbase shop they sell a CD which contains Zap!Chess Paderborn and Zap!Chess Rejkjavic, but no Zanzibar. So where can you buy that software?

It's a free update for everybody who bought Zap!Chess.

Thank you for the information. You wouldn't happen to know where I can get this upgrade? On the Chessbase server there is only a service pack from 2006 which solves some problems. Not a word about Zap!Chess Zanzibar.

Here. Or www.chessbase.com -> service and download -> select Zap!Chess -> scroll down. It's below the service pack.

Thank you. :)  I have been looking at www.chessbase.de. There they do not have it.

I thought that Zap! Chess is a mini Deep Blue of sorts and needs very powerful hardware and long time controls to achieve good results. In the WCCC's it has run on something like 512 CPUs hardly what the home user has at home.

No, Zap chess IS a good engine, also on 2 CPU: http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/40_120_ratinglist/ratinglist/rangliste.html
but you are right that one reason is the good multi processor scaling, on 1 CPU it's not that strong....

Zanzibar is probably third best behind Rybka and Hiarcs on 1CPU, so still not too bad!   :)

Hi Graham,

Do you have figures for Zap x64 and x32 on 1 CPU compared to Hiarcs on 1?

Thanks,

Harvey

Not sure if that's what you were after or not Harvey?

I though Harvery aftering is Hiarcs and Zap running on single CPU result ( 64 bit and 32 bit both)
