I am unable to import Rybka as a new UCI engine into Fritz on my new computer, which runs Windows XP. I was able to import Rybka into Fritz on my old computer, which has Windows Vista as the operating system. Is this a Windows XP thing, or is it something else? Help would be greatly appreciated!

Rybka runs well under Win XP, so there must be something else. Can you describe, what exactly happens when you try to install Rybka? Is there any error messages?

Thanks, I will do that. I just noticed on the website today that it says that I should try removing the path to the Nalimov endgame tablebases in the options for the installation of Rybka. Could you tell me how to do that?

when I click on "Create new UCI engine" under the Engine menu in Deep Fritz 10, it gives me a "Set up UCI Engine" box, in which I select "Browse" to find the folder into which I copied the Rybka 2.3 UCI folder from the Rybka disk. I double click the appropriate .exe file (Rybka v2.3.mp.x64.exe) (although it doesn't have the .exe extension showing in the list I can see) and I get a strange box, probably an error message. Up the top this strange box has C:\Documents and Settings\PETER\Desktop\Rybka 2.3 UCI\Rybka v2.3.mp.x64.exe (so the appropriate path to where I have saved the .exe file on my computer), but then, the text of this strange message box only contains a single "r" and an OK button, as if I am missing the rest of the text of the message. When I click the OK button, I get an error box with the message "Engine could not load".

Sometimes it then gives me a message box saying "Error: Doesn't have parameters". When I installed Rybka on my computer running Windows Vista it asked me whether I wanted to install a 32-bit or 64-bit addressing version of the program, however I am not prompted with that question when I try to install Rybka on my computer running Windows XP SP2.

I am running Windows XP SP2, however I have a Dvi graphics and not a VGA graphics connection.

Are you sure, that your Win XP is 64 bit? It is not possible to run 64 bit Rybka under Win32. Try to run 32 bit Rybkas. Graphics options should be irrelevant, because Rybka itself does not use any graphics.

This is only important if you have those tablebases installed (you can find the path to the tablebases in the options, if you installed them). It looks like this error also pops up if you try to install the 64 bit version on a 32-bit system, so I changed the instructions a little bit.

hi - thanks for your help. Do you know how I can determine whether my Windows program is using 32-bit addressing or 64-bit addressing? I have 4 GB cache, and oodles of RAM, and have enough memory for using 64-bit addressing to make sense (and be necessary, if I want to access all of my memory!) Under my details, it says I have Physical Address Extension

If you look at the bootup screen, Windows will show either "Microsoft Windows XP  x64 edition" for 64 bit or "Microsoft Windows XP" for 32 bit.

If you run System Information, then in the System Summary there must be OS Name (the very first row) - "Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional x64 Edition".
In English Windows version you can find System Information from Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools.

You need to have Windows XP Professional x64 in order to run Rybka 64-bit.

Of course there are other operating systems other than Windows, that can run 64-bit programs. If you want Windows you have 2 choices:
Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional x64.

If you just have Windows XP SP2 this is only 32-bit so you can't run Rybka 64-bit.....

Fritz looks for engines per default in some hidden folder in "application data".
If you want to make an UCI engine, you´ll have to brouse your computer manually (normal path is C:/Programme(x86)/chessbase/engines).
