Does Rybka 4 have options for creating real personalities, or just piece value tweaking? Could someone clarify this for me?

Thanks

Piece values, time management and rook endgame scaling.

Thanks. A bit of a disappointment, i was hoping for something similar to Chessmaster-type personalities.

Maybe we can start some thread here with proposed personalities :) I like that option too in chessmaser. At least you can feel like playing in real tournament :)

I agree wholeheartedly!

For a start on a human personality, here is info from the Release Notes thread by Vas...

"GM Larry Kaufman recommends the following adjustments as more human-like:
pawns=0, knights=24, bishops=24, rooks=12, queens=0."

I suppose, you can value opponents pieces little bit more than yours for Capablanca and opposite for middlegame player who avoid exchanges. I do not know if it would be possible to put some "weird" settings to simulate weaker players. It would be also interesting to set engine to use only one processor if want to simulate weaker players, or also to set up fixed depths. This would be nice add-on for Aquarium...if it is not already somehow...to create different settings and to keep different settings not as different engine, but different personalities for that engine (in this case Rybka 4). Later, we can play games on our computer in order to determine ratings and keep those personalities.

Any idea how time management adjustments and rook endgame scaling will affect personality creation?

I actually do not know what rook endgame scaling means. Also, still waiting for my copy of Rybka and will see as soon as I get it.

All evaluation scores in rook endgames are multiplied by [rook endgame scaling] / 100.

Well, of course, set the queen to -950 and Rybka should aim to trade the queen for anything.

For a minor piece, most of the time. A worthless queen is very good at hindering the opponent's development. :)

I'd have to also set the rooks to -500 to have a chance! :)

But how to simulate relatively strong player with some style? That would be a bit of challenge.

rybka 4 on one processor is still going to play at 3000 elo :)

i think this is why the CPU usage meter was added. if you set it say 1 core @ 10% you'd have an opponent with all of rybka's knowledge but far less speed --- i like this better than fixed depth because it would seem much more natural.
Parent - By vdragan (***) [us] Date 2010-05-26 21:08
because if I intentionaly weakened program to simulate weak player, why then to waste rest of processors :)

The only problem is: you would certainly loose against Rybka on one core running at 1% CPU usage.

Does Rybka 4 have the UCI limit strength feature?
Parent - By Vempele (Silver) [fi] Date 2010-05-26 21:46
Yes.
Parent - - By yanquis1972 (****) [us] Date 2010-05-26 21:54
however it causes it to move instantly, which makes for an unnatural feeling game.

Some GUI's you can set a delay.
Parent - By vdragan (***) [us] Date 2010-05-27 01:29
or that can be set in engine too
Parent - - By vdragan (***) [us] Date 2010-05-27 01:28
Wait a minute...what is approximate rating for Rybka running on 1 core at 1% usage????
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2010-05-27 04:54
I guess 2500 - 2600 Elo
Parent - By vdragan (***) [us] Date 2010-05-27 14:32
that is interesting data. It would be really interesting to see how rating would go with percentage change. That, plus some other analysis would make nice scallability.

> Rybka on one core running at 1% CPU usage.

on a 12 core system is it better to set cores to 7 or cpu to say 99%

it's 'just' piece value tweaking, but somehow you can create complex personalities from this. how exactly remains for me to find out.  i'm hoping others will do the dirty work & share the results.

I'm also not sure how complex personalities can be created just by tweaking piece values. Hopefully there will be some detailed documentation. At any rate, it could be interesting!!
