Rybka 4 is now finalized and packaging has begun. Ordering information can be found at ChessBase (www.chessbase.com) and Convekta/ChessOk (www.chessok.com). Downloads from RybkaChess (www.rybkachess.com) will start on Wednesday (26.5.2010) evening.

A huge thanks to everyone on the Rybka team who helped. Lukas and Jiri have made huge contributions recently, Lukas with his clustering project and Jiri with his opening work. Nick and Larry helped considerably with the release, and Jeroen and Felix also chipped in.

Another huge thanks to the Beta testers for their help, and to Dadi for providing a sub-forum for this purpose. We've had 3500 posts in this subforum, it's been very productive.

More detailed credits will be found in the release notes.

Full documentation about Rybka 4 should be available by this weekend. I'll be here answering all questions and putting together a FAQ this weekend at the latest. We'll also be playing in Leiden 28.5-30.5, Hans will operate for us there, so this should be a fun week. :)

Congratulations Vas!  Rybka 4 is the strongest (soon to be) available engine.  I can't believe that you got large page support in and working so quickly, I hope we didn't beat you up too much to get it in :) As I have said - you are a coding Ninja!   Hi, to all my friends here - I had a great time with the beta test, it's such a pleasure to work with really smart people and a privilege to contribute, now I can go hide again for a few years!

Thanks for coming back for the release push Nick, it was a big help! You seem to have two modes - all in or total rest. :)

Yes that's me!  And good luck in Leiden.

Cheers.

I'm curious to see the finished product, but already like the large page support (I can drop my Ubuntu partition plans now). Lets see how many bugs are left this time ;-)
Parent - - By urodets (**) [ua] Date 2010-05-26 07:37
Why to drop ubuntu? Lack of disk space? :)
Parent - By Highendman (****) Date 2010-05-26 18:07
I venture a guess - just better use of disk space ;)

maybe some prices can be put up on rybkachess?
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-26 06:58
Various info will be added to our web site over the next few days. The prices for the www.rybkachess.com versions are 36 Euro for single-processor and 65 Euro for multi-processor.

thx a million for the info , I know a lot of people will be happy with that info  ! :)
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-05-26 15:24
Good! That means it the dollar price should be dropping every day!
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-27 02:34
The Euro is the dollar with 6 to 7 year time delay!

Vas
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-05-27 02:59
6 or 7 years? I wish! I give the dollar three years max. But this still gives me time to get a great discount on R4! :-D
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-27 03:02
Please note that I can't promise that these prices won't change. (In theory I am completely serious - and Jeroen would say in practice too.)

Vas
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-05-27 03:07
Jeroen would want payment in gold, but with extraction costs at 1/4 of the spot price, this looks overvalued too. Maybe you will have to start taking payment in chickens...
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-27 03:08
Either that or barrels of crude oil. :)

You can have some of the billions of barrels that are destroying the Gulf of Mexico!!  What a mess that is!

Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-05-28 15:39
Actually, Vas should be insisting on payments in Dollars for now, since they are rising relative to his local currency, whereas the Euro is falling...
Parent - By Bobby C (****) Date 2010-05-28 21:10
Yep the price in USD is down $2 since the day Rybka 4 was released.

I guess Yen would be better - or Yuan ;)
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-05-28 23:00
Do you think a lot of people in Poland are familiar with the Yen or Yuan?

a question for vas or the beta testers -- has mpv efficiency been improved in R4?

I never tested this, but after looking at the final product probably not. However, R4's hash usage has been improved and I now daresay that it's on the level of Zappa (i.e. excellent), this helps to speed up MPV in transpositions.

Not more than very slightly.

Vas, I read beta/alpha testers were testing with different settings. I am sure they found the best settings for different time controls. Will you be sharing the best settings or you will make the best settings as the Default settings?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-05-25 15:45

> I am sure they found the best settings for different time controls.

The settings were optimized for what was tested, but you can find better settings for specific conditions at home (that's why the settings are on release).

> Will you be sharing the best settings or you will make the best settings as the Default settings?

The optimized settings are default.

> The optimized settings are default

Are they they the best settings? best means R4 plays at full strength
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-05-25 16:59
For what was tested, yes.
Parent - By Albert Silver (***) [br] Date 2010-05-25 21:13
Mostly, yes. It can depend. For example, some settings were shown to be especially good against the clones, but less than ideal vs. the rest, and even so, it depended on the time control. There is no doubt there will be threads galore discussing this in the near future.
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2010-05-26 06:17
You'll have to enable large pages to play at maximum strength. All other settings are optimal.
Parent - - By Sunny (***) [us] Date 2010-05-26 06:26

> You'll have to enable large pages

What is the process to enable the large pages in OS?
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-27 02:34
We have a document which will be ready this weekend. Warning: it's not child's play.

Vas, I am in IT for last 12 Years.
Parent - - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [pl] Date 2010-05-27 03:04
Ok, let me put it more seriously: this feature is a pain in the neck! But it's quite worth it, a good 15% speedup.

Since I am just banging around on a 2 core Lenovo, should I even worry about the Large Pages thing?  Or would it  be more hassle than it is worth for me.  Especially for analysis.  Or will I be fine just using R4 normally and not worrying about Large Pages.

Thanks!
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-05-27 05:41
Let me put it like this: 15% faster means that you:

Can get the analysis output that Rybka would produce in one hour, in just 50 minutes.
Gain 15 instant, free Elo in games.

If that doesn't interest you you can ignore the setting.

Hi Vas,

Could you please include in the document the system requirements (OS version, 32/64 bit processor, etc, etc) to get LP working?

This would be useful in case one doesn't get this working, to know if he or she should o should not invest time trying to figure out how to make it work.

Regards,

                      Patricio.

PD: By the way, :-), Should it work in my old Lenovo R400 (2 32 bit core) in Win Vista Enterprise?

Ok.

I think so.

We'll try. It's hard to tune everything perfectly but there are no really major flaws in the default settings.

what does it mean when all lines of analysis output are grayed-out, which was also a characteristic of R3?
Parent - - By Vempele (Silver) [fi] Date 2010-05-31 11:31
It's a characteristic of the GUI. Which one?
