> You can convert the ChessBase database in to a CBF base that can be read by the Shredder application - much better!  :o)

How do you do that?  I know that you can convert other things to CBH but I didn't know you could convert the other way as well.
Parent - - By Razor (****) Date 2010-04-16 06:22
It's held within the ChessBase application, like 'Save As' in a MS Office application.

The steps I use are:
1. use Ctrl X (this opens up a window to create a 'New Database')
2. make 'Save As' type .CBF file and enter the 'Name' you want to call the DB and select 'Save'
3. using your mouse, select the database you want to copy data from and drag the DB icon over the top of the new CBF DB you have just created
4. select 'OK' in the 'Copy Games' window.

You should now have a CBF version of the CBH DB you just copied - when you open the ShredderClassic GUI simply use the 'ChangeDB' feature and point to where your new CBF DB is stored.

Thanks for the reply!  This is going to be very helpful!

Eelco, no problems for me with Chessbase gui.

I had the very same issue in the Chessbase  Rybka 3 and Deep Fritz GUI 11 editions. The problem is caused by Design/Notation in high quality option being checked by default. Unchecking this option got rid of the problem.

Thanks a lot for this tip Peter! That actually seems to solve the problem for me too, I can see all the players names and if I check "high quality" again, the page immediately goes blank, so there is definitely a cause and effect relation with this option. This makes the GUI much more usable especially the database functions. Veselin Topalov should hire you as the Chessbase expert for the match, Chessbase does not have the money for more employees maybe but if they would hire you they could lease you for the match for a nice sum. Ask danger money for having to fly through the ash clouds to Sofia. And double pay for needing to beta test Rybka 4 in the process :) I'm sure Topalov could use you with all the Rybka preparation they are apparently doing.

Thanks,
Eelco

Glad that sorted the issue!

Persistent hash, randomize, positional endgames: there will be novelty, improvements?
Parent - - By Ryba (*) Date 2010-04-19 20:49
Approximately what is the elo improvement ?
Parent - - By Vempele (Silver) Date 2010-04-19 20:52
Approximations are best left to the people who play 10 games and, having no grasp of statistics, declare their result the ultimate truth.
Parent - By Razor (****) Date 2010-04-20 05:16
Agreed + use a time limit that they then believe can be extrapolated across all time limits with the same results!  :-)
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-04-20 05:48
It is frequently best (and easiest) to take this to the limit and play 0 games, producing results with a large enough error bar to satisfy all possibilities. For instance, this technique can be used to answer questions about a match between F13 and Rybka 4.

Vas, I hope Rybka 4 can beat all the current clones and free versions of chess engines (Stockfish, Komodo, etc.).
Do you have any comment about this? I will have to wait for about a year to see if R4 can beat these egingines,
until I pay a high high price for something that is being offered for free. Two years has become a long time to wait
for something better than R3 or (maybe not better). I hope you have it! Best of luck to you. You are in for some fierce
competion however. I will wait for the legitimate ratings to come out on R4. If R4 is still the best engine in these ratings
and can beat the clones, and free programs I will buy it immediately! Again good luck to you!

Sincerely Yours,
Gary

You said:
"- Rybka 4 will be a normal UCI engine, without copy protection, and will be available in the first part of May."

My questions are:

1)first part of May of which year?
2)What are the days of May that are included in the first part?
Parent - - By Vempele (Silver) Date 2010-05-11 17:34

> 1)first part of May of which year?

Well, Vas once promised a beta version for <day of week> May <number>th. This would imply 2021.

I don't like all this deviousness. Just give us our R4! Its been too long...Team Topalov lost so what is left to wait for?

May 30, 31 that is clearly shown as being at the start of May on my Calendar! Maybe Vas is using the same one? :-)

Vas, how can one preorder rybka when:
- there is nothing official said about her improvements (fixed bugs, rating, playing style, parameters etc);
- there is no official release date and you have a well known record in postponing things;
- there are other marks on the market that show respect to theirs cutomers (including Rybka 3) ???

Vas is not asking you to preorder R4 ChessBase is.anyway if you read it properly it is only single core version they are advertising.:)
Parent - By wem511 (**) Date 2010-05-15 04:50
Yup, and now they have a deep version up if you click on the 'new products' tab they have
- - By Jessica (**) Date 2010-04-11 13:19 Edited 2010-04-11 13:22
I think even after Rybka is released I will wait to see if its able to beat these newer engines out there that are very strong no point in paying 100.00 when we can get stockfish and other engines for free.  So I hope that these e.g. some fix some not include the majority of what we asked for in the rybka 3+ update with higher elo because if not what would be point of buying this?  Kinda reminds me of people that buy Hiarcs and other of these engines.  So I'll wait to see some results.

So based on your test which I know you tested does/will Rybka 4 be able to out perform these new (under the table) engines that are very powerful?  This is an important question because they are free.
Parent - - By dr_zied_haddad (**) Date 2010-04-11 13:50
It's a good point, just see my previous posts. I think even if Rybka4 improvement will not be very very important, without a +70 rating points, if the product is good enough with especially many engines with different style of play, investing in the new engine (+ an updated and bug free aquarium for those who didn't have the product) is interesting.
Personally, i'm and still addicted to the shredder engines, even if it's no longer the strongest. It always comes with a lot of interesting ideas and different style of play, but also it's among the engines (as were the fritz and rybka engines previously) that we still can change the settings to have our own private engine !!

I think the thing that worries me the most is his answer to:

> 3. Are the Rybka 3+ bugfix (bishop under promotion, hashtable bug, ect) incorporated in Rybka 4?
Vas: Some are fixed, some are not.

To be honest I believe Vas see's Rybka as losing ground to free software (the future of chess I hope) so had to come out with something somewhat stronger than Rybka however the downside to this stronger version would be many new bugs.  Now I'm sure this question won't be answered by Vas because he doesn't want to make another promise he can't keep but IF Rybka 4 is found to have many new and some of the same bugs will ALL Rybka 4 recieve some sort of update that correct this or will we have to wait for THIS CLUSTER VERSION by wait meaning buy?  Or will you provide update for FREE?
Parent - - By Geomusic (*****) Date 2010-04-11 15:25 Edited 2010-04-11 15:28
Jessica, you understand to even theoretically operate a Rybka Cluster version you need AT LEAST 2 nodes (computers) hooked together and a cluster OS to take advantage of it right? Plus its expensive, I think Windows Server 2008R2 Standard will set you back $1029 just for the OS. Unless you use a cluster Linux version then convert with Wine. But I don't know if that can or has ever been done with the private Cluster Rybka version :) And we won't even get into how much your power bill would be just ask Lukas!
Parent - By BrandonSi (***) Date 2010-04-11 15:36
Server 2003 has clustering services, which might be cheaper, but you're right, building a high performance active-active cluster can get expensive.

I suppose on could string together 2-3 nodes based on i5 750's for about $2,000 USD, not counting the OS.
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) Date 2010-04-11 15:50
Rybka Cluster doesn't need a cluster operating system. In fact I use XP x64.
Parent - - By serbian master (**) Date 2010-04-11 16:47
Can you tell us who was beta tester of rybka 4 in playchess?
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) Date 2010-04-11 17:42
Rybka 4 isn't ready yet - so no-one has a Rybka 4 beta. The current private Rybka version still is called Rybka 3g118. So if you find Rybka 4 on Playchess it's a fake.
Parent - By Nelson Hernandez (Gold) Date 2010-04-11 18:47
And of course, you are sworn to secrecy on the strength of this version.  I wonder if Google German translates cuss language well.

AFAIK we(?)'ll get two weeks of testing time.

Wow, that long? I vaguely remember we had even a bit more last time when R3 came out. At least more had been planned. If now only two weeks are planned in the first place....

No testing is required. If it compiles, ship it!!!
Parent - - By Eelco de Groot (***) Date 2010-04-12 03:02
No shipping is required, because Chessbase can now offer its products for download, since Deep Fritz 12. This theoretically offers more flexibility for the release cycles of both Chessbase and Convekta with respect to Rybka that is, because they were until now synchronized to Chessbase that could only offer CDs. So theoretically a bugfix version would now become possible that does not take two years to complete :) Welcome to the twentyfirst century Chessbase. Well, I suppose training CDs are far more important for their revenue and they only provide this as a service to Vas to compensate him for not getting the server version done in time. I'm 100% speculating, sorry.

Eelco
Parent - - By Geomusic (*****) Date 2010-04-13 22:11
I don't think it was Chessbase's fault for not having the servers. More than likely Vas saw the disgruntled rybka fan-base and decided it wasn't as cherry as he thought it was at this juncture for remote rybkas. Everyone was screaming R4 first and this is what they are getting. Fans win again! well sort of :)
Parent - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2010-04-13 22:18
Servers can be leased from a lot of places. That's not likely to have been the issue. But remember that Cloud Rybka needs a serious GUI and Vas doesn't do GUIs, so this would have to come from Chessbase or Convetka or someone who can provide this capability. Getting this done right will be a big deal and won't be a trivial matter. When you are charging by the minute, people will expect a first rate experience, not just a strong engine.
Parent - By Vempele (Silver) Date 2010-04-12 06:26

Last time the mail said, "Our status is that we're past code freeze". Presumably he had trouble compiling some of the versions and wanted help. :)
Parent - - By serbian master (**) Date 2010-04-12 19:32
ha ha ha this is no true. If rybka 4 no exist yet, then how made rybka4.ctg?????? with rybka 3?!
I think rybka4.ctg is made of cluster + rybka 4.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) Date 2010-04-12 19:43
Rybka 4 does not exist yet.
But iterations between R3 and the coming R4 yes.
Parent - - By onursurme (***) Date 2010-04-17 19:13
How do you know?
Maybe it is completed and Vas won't need to change anything.
He say that still there are some bugs and he will release Rybka4 with those bugs.
Parent - By Uly (Gold) Date 2010-04-17 19:31
That's very unlikely.
Parent - - By SchachProfi (****) Date 2010-04-11 17:20
There isn't any need to use a special "cluster version" at all, or in other words, its pretty easy to write one's own "cluster-version".

I have written a stub program which can be used with every UCI-engine (and it often is definetely interesting to mix in other engine's moves as well), it simply analyses the best moves of the master engine and best black's answers to those and exchanges its knowledge with the running child-engines, even including the persistant hash and other features.

I have optimized it to my 16x4-core cluster here, but if there is a deeper interest (and a cluster at your hands) i may send/release a free copy of it soon to you/the community. My cluster beats a single Deep Rybka 3 or any other engine running on a normal PC with ease (both using just a general purpose opening book).

I'd be interested to look at it! I'm curious as to how you would evaluate the "best" move with engines of different origins, especially given a large discrepancy in evaluation.. I assume it's just a master UCI interface for the GUI, which then coordinates with the other engines via UCI? Would that then necessitate your own time-control algorithm? Seems like it would.
Parent - By dr_zied_haddad (**) Date 2010-04-11 18:09
