"Five to ten years from now, a machine of this scale will be routine in a modest-sized cluster," said Rick Stevens, associate laboratory director for Computing and Life Sciences at Argonne National Laboratory. "In some ways it's like giving us a time machine to look forward five to ten years as to what general purpose machines will look like. The smart developers will take advantage of that (today)."

Seems to me the first person to befriend to Rick Stevens just might be the next Freestyle champion!  (Don't think I wouldn't do it!)

Yeah, yeah I know, no engine could use all those cores.  But they will soon enough!

Actually I don't believe in something even remotely similar to this being in popular use. Perhaps two or three Freestyle maniacs will have it. I imagine Majd could be one of them.. ;)

But besides that I believe that the hardware way to improve chess is quite stony and dissatisfying. Look at Hydra and Rybka and you know which way to go...

Two or three Freestyle maniacs...hmmm, let's see, who could you be talking about?

The number of CPU's is impressive, the amount of RAM is impressive ... but the amount of storage ... are they kidding.  I can have that today for less than a $1000.  This must be a typo.

High time for Vas to make a cluster version of Rybka ;)

At some point, a cheap cluster implementation might make some sense. I bet getting speedups like 1.5 for 2 and 2.0 for 4 wouldn't take too much work.
