Up Topic Rybka Support & Discussion / Rybka Discussion / Rajlich team in 6th CSS/Pal Freestyle
- - By Vasik Rajlich (Silver) [hu] Date 2007-06-25 07:05
The 6th CSS/Pal freestyle tournament has finished and our Rajlich team has won with 6/9.

Our full team was:

Hardware: Lukas Cimiotti
Opening moonlighting (rounds 2 & 4): Jeroen Noomen
Openings & Analysis: Iweta Rajlich
Operation & Control: Vasik Rajlich

The tournament was stacked unlike anything which I've ever seen. The result was completely up in the air before and during the event. A special tip of the hat goes to our main competitors, any of whom would have been worthy winners:

- The 'Flyingfatman' team was positively loaded. In the driver's seat was Dagh Nielsen, the most successful recent freestyler. Analysis and support were given by Jiri Dufek, the second most successful recent freestyler, and Majd Ansari, a chess and computer chess expert who could run a NASA lab on the computers in his home in Kuwait. Many time freestyler Nick Carlin was the captain.

- The 'Cato the Younger' team contained the most successful recent freestylers not on the 'Flyingfatman' team. Anson Williams, Yingheng Chen and Nelson Hernandez have played together now for over a year and work very well as a team, with apparently well-defined roles which they've refined over many tournaments. They are solid and complete in their style and their approach, perhaps the most complete team around.

- Dennis Breder's team 'Klosterfrau' would under normal circumstances also belong in this discussion, although it seems that Dennis had other obligations and could not dedicate himself fully to the tournament. He still finished with 5.5 and a place in the top group.

Finally, all of remaining teams were quite formidable as well and could, under the right circumstances, win the event.

I'd also like to give a special thanks to:

- Lukas Cimiotti, who provided us with an Intel 2x 5355 (the exact same machine and Rybka version which ran in Amsterdam) as well as a QX6700 running at 3.8 GHz.

- Jeroen Noomen, who dropped by the Playchess room in rounds 2 and 4 and took us through the opening of those games. In round 2, he dropped us off in the middle of a crushing attack and black already resigned after just a couple more moves. It reminded me of Rybka in computer chess tournaments :) In round 4, Cato the Younger team was the likely victim, but they smelled something, dodged big theory with the offbeat 5. .. h6 in the Sicilian, and methodically drew the worse position.

- Iweta, who was great and (more importantly :)) whose French defense withstood the rigors of the tournament.

And, finally, best wishes to Rybka webmasters Felix and Christoph Kling, who yesterday celebrated their 20th birthdays. One more year and you can legally drink alcohol in the US. :)

Congratulations team Rajlich on a great performance again. I had no idea what we were facing when we played against you. Having Mr. Noomen setup a nice position in the opening before unleashing the full power of the Rajlich camp, give a guy a break! :)

Fortunately, Rybka is an amazing chess engine and analysis tool. After playing many freestyle games now, I start to get a feeling that chess really is a draw and it's not possible to force a win unless your opponent makes a mistake. That doesn't stop me fearing a loss whenever facing the likes of yourself and Flyingfatman / Flying Saucers.

The curse of the lone engines returns again. The centaurs did much better than the lone engines in this tournament. I think you were right when you pointed out that previous engine-only champions won probably due to having 8-way machines when their competitors only had single and dual processor machines.

My most exciting round was definitely round 3 vs Kreuzfahrtschiff. 5 minutes before the start of the round, my quad machine failed in a most dramatic way. It sounded like someone literally threw a spanner in the works! Well needless to say, my book was gone along with my all important quad! So during round 3, I played on whilst desperately trying to get my machine to boot up (I couldn't even make it to the bios). I checked all the memory, changed graphics cards and finally found out that it was the primary hard disk that had died. During the course of the game, I managed to get another hard disk in place, install Windows, Fritz 10 GUI and my engines.

We were very fortunate to still manage to win that round. Up to that point, I never worried much about time on the clock, as long as the position was safe, I was confident I could play out a draw without losing on time. Now I'll always be concerned that my machine might die on me when I have a mere 15 seconds remaining.

I'd like to thank everyone for taking part and for following the competition. Again congrats Vas and co. for the first freestyle double.

I didn´t saw all games, but at the final round, I was seeing the games.
In the last 10 min I was excited, because Cato could win and Rajlich
draw, at least in my head.
Very exciting !!!

Congratulations!

Vas & team,

Congratulations on your first place in the PAL/CSS Freestyle 6 finals event !  Really well done, a fine second victory in this event.

Our full report will follow before too long, suffice to say we had our own hardware problems including a lightning strike (Caissa?!) to bring down one of our quads during Dagh's momentous exhibition crush of Mission control - and multiple disconnections to our servers, including a 7 min reboot during the Cato game.

T'was a fun weekend, we must do it again sometime :)

Nick on behalf of team flyingfatman

PS. Happy Birthday to Felix and Christoph!

Hi Vas congrats. It was a great performance. I liked seeing French defence (my favourite one) working for you.
