My move again, to post a mating line, per the Warriors team request.

I'll post the longest line to mate, where every Black deviation leads to a shorter mate.

I think there's a mate in 23 or 24. I'll post it in the next 10-20 minutes.

if we find a hole in your line the game will be drawn :)

Mate after Black's 62. ..Ra3:

63. R4c7 g5 64. Rc6+ Kg7 65. R8c7+ Kf8 66. Rh6 Kg8 67. Re6 Kf8 68.

Ra3+ 75. Kh4 Re3 76. h7 Rh3+ 77. Kxh3 Ke8 78. h8=Q#

Any other Black moves, in the line above, leads to faster or equal mate length.

The only way to not resign, play until the end and finish the game before 2010 :)

Handshake! Good game HEM, congratulations on the win!

I'm still waiting for HEM's secret thread to check his thinking process of the start of the games.

Shahar,we are only normal guys playing chess.some of us have big hardware others not.i know for a fact that our 2 best OTB players have little hardware.yet you seemed to have had to prove a point by hirering outside hardware.fair enough you won the game.i could have done the same as you but i thought these games were played on a more friendly basis as did all our team.whilst i admire your great play and admire your win.i feel their was a certain amount of deceit in this game.i told you i am a bad loser.

You're a bad loser. :-D

I would consider it quite thrilling to play against such an opponent with high OTB strength and massive hardware access.  We knew he had this during the great majority of the game, and we also knew that he would be spending a huge amount of time on the match even before it started.  I just wish I had more time for the match itself--then I could have helped more in doing something like the coordination and organization that was done in the Headbangers vs. Warriors match.  Unfortunately, that simply cannot happen outside of the summer.

i think we were all aware of the extra challenge posed by accepting the fast time control, yet we did and we played and may have deceived ourselves.

HEM was willing to pay a high price and push the odds to win the Rybka Warriors scalp and succeeded. There is no deceit in that.

> i think we were all aware of the extra challenge posed by accepting the fast time control

But we assumed we'd get to think on HEM's time, only later on we discovered that HEM's plan was to reply as soon as possible to minimize our thinking time.

we assumed a lot of things, but we accepted the conditions that made this possible.

I'm very pleased to let you know that this game and its analysis is featured in the recent edition of 'Selective Search' (volume 146).
The magazine is only available in paper copy. Selective Search is published by Eric Hallsworth and I highly recommended it to all computer chess fans.
Many thanks to the one and only Harvey Williamson who introduced me to Eric.

what H/W did HEM rent out? i've never been clear on this. i assume he linked it up to the new IDeA somehow?
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2010-02-11 17:11
For the match I was using, during November, 44 cores across 6 computers. 4 'on demand' Nehalem-EP I rented from a cloud-provider; it's remarkable how inexpensive that was - there are 4-5 main vendors that rent 'on demand' hosted computers, and they mainly compete on price. I rented these 4 servers on November 4 until December 3. The servers I used were a Nehalem-EP (w5580) + i7 I own in my lan, plus these 4 * Nehalem-EPs rented over the web, all used with the new Aquarium IDeA that supports multiple single-core engines, local and remote. I used it mostly interactively - yes, many hours every evening - I guess at least 4-5 hours a day every day during this match, and 10-12 hours a day of interactive analysis during weekends. (HEM)

wow, that's intense! a well deserved win, needless to say.

HEM, where did you rent these machines & how much did it cost? i guess their only (possible) use was via IDeA?
Parent - By Highendman (****) Date 2010-02-11 20:28
From softlayer - http://softlayer.com/dedicated/
Yes, used via IDeA - taking advantage of it's new 'remote engine' feature. It was a lot of fun having quite a lot of positions analysed quickly.
I used multiple single-core instances, and IDeA was extremely helpful in my decision making.
I believe any serious correspondence chess player not using IDeA is at a disadvantage when playing against an equally strong player who knows IDeA well and uses it interactively.
