I open this new thread for all who want to know (or inform) when the next Freestyle tour will be coming up.

Situation right now is: we most probably won't have a Freestyle Tour before 2010. As to InfinityChess or any other sponsor we are on hold.

'Highendman', who some months before in this forum generously expressed his wish of private sponsoring, just informed me by email about his private reasons, why he has "to postpone sponsoring a free-style tournament for at least until after April of next year". I do not doubt his seriousness.

The good side of the medal is, we now have plenty of time for discussing the rules and formats :)

Regards,
Arno

So what you're implying is that we shouldn't wait for any new schedule from Infinity this month, right?
([InfinityChess has recently changed its development team and is now working hard on all necessary improvements in order to run a stable and multifunctional chess server, which also includes freestyle and correspondence chess tournaments. We aspire to be back with a renewed tournament plan in October, 2009.])

what happened to infinitychess???
Parent - By Ciron (**) Date 2009-10-21 10:39
There is a delay in development of the new InfintyChess software, as they made a new start from point zero, but I think a test version will be out in December. Unfortunately they do not update the (old) website :(, as they are completely focussed on the new one (I have seen templates, which look quite nice.) If they wouldn't honestly think of a new release, then they would have turned off the current (old) server, as it would not make sense to keep it any longer...

Do you consider the Mundialchess tournament also a Freestyle tour?.
Parent - By Ciron (**) Date 2009-10-21 10:46
Difficult question. Yes and no. There are so many unclear points with this tour, that we will have to wait which direction MundialChess effectively goes. The time format 10+1 is nothing I would recommend to any freestyler. And so far we don't know what really will happen. There shall be a newsletter coming soon; I expect, there will be major changes, and we should discuss about this afterwards... Server is online again (and my opponent found a "resign" button - big surprise for me! :)

A shame but i believe sad that it seems that freestyle as we know it is more or less dead.

Our last hope was left with highendman pumping some money into a fading dream we all had of what was a great tour but he has now pulled the plug no sponsors can be found to light up what has been a bad year for most in the financial chaos that had gripped the planet.

If i had the money myself i would put it up as prize money and get some kind of tour on before Christmas i just wish i had i really do we have been let down so much and left feeling (if only).

No sponsor for 2009 i expect no sponsor for 2010 either as the world recovers iam surprised highendman pulled out he seemed so set on the idea he had us all pumped and ready to go.

One thing i do predict is Vas may as well release Rybka 4 and maybe a rybka 4 Cluster version as he seems he will not got a chance to test this software n the freestyle environment.

Looks like it back to my book work then in a vain hope maybe 2010 will be my year but it seems so more unlikely and that pains me to say it.

Are we a little bit overdramatic today?  I grant you the news isn't particularly good but it does not seem as dire as you perceive it.  There is still interest in Freestyle, it is just a matter of finding a sponsor and chess server.  All the people who have participated and had some measure of success in the past still like the format and would play again under the right circumstances.  Frankly it does not surprise me that we are in this situation right now as with the release of Rybka 4 pending a pretty good chunk of the Freestyle competition (Vas and all his cohorts) are pretty much sidelined anyway.

Another point: by next spring it will have been so long since the last prize tournament there may be a lot of new blood, new vigor, new hardware.  Water off a duck's back, I say.

:-D

No doubt Comrade Hernandez has some ideas on how we can liberate these resources...

Chess server: Chessbase probably would be willing to participate.  I can't think of any reason why they would ban us as personae non grata other than we are rude and crude and about as welcome as a great big pack of gun-toting redneck hillbillies showing up at your daughter's wedding already well liquored-up, and finding out much too late that they are all the groom's relatives.  Yeahh, "we all kin now."

So it all comes down to money.  Hmm...could we name it the "Nelson Hernandez Freestyle Open"?  Nah, let someone else take the honor.

That's what I think too.
Canceling of tournaments and matches is quite common in today's chess world. Just have a look to the history of FIDE world championship and grand prix events; noone, however, would doubt that wcc will go on, whereever, whenever and whoever this will be...
That's what I also expect for Freestyle Chess. It is too attractive in order to be ignored, but it is also too complicated (and too comlex) in order to be organized by greenhorns. 2010 shall be the year for a brand new start!

How about playing without a sponsor? Everyone who wants to play pays say $250 as an entry fee and the top 3 gets prize money along without a small cut to the organizer for his/her work.
