What should my hashtable size be set at for correspondence games, wherein Rybka might run (on either a 32 or 64-bit laptop machine) for a week or more before the hashtable is cleared?

so big as possible, max. value is 2048MB for Rybka 3.

I really hope Vas can change this value to 8GB or even higher in all the next versions. That's important.

Gaмßito.

Don't expect a dramatic strength increase by doing that.

The correct reply is that you cannot know what is the optimal hash for rybka in correspondence games.

You probably need many thousands of correspondence games to know if 2048 mbytes is better than 1024 mbytes for rybka3 for correspondence games.

I believe that nobody used enough computer time to know.
More hash is supposed to be better but chess programs may have bugs so it does not prove that more hash is better.

Uri, would you like to play a corr. game in CHess? 30 days/1 day per move.  Gentlemans agreement of course. Unless someone wants to volunteer to arbiter/TD?

That's true. I believe it's much more important to have some kind of permanent hash than having the "working hash" as big as possible...

Yes, I keep running at 64MB even though I could push it to 256 (with 64 Rybka is actually using 568 due to the bug...)

Uri,
A quick review of the posts here reveals that no one knows what's best for hashtable sizes. The answers range from 56 mb to 2048 mb. For better or worse, I'm using 1024mb.

And, it's not a matter of IF Rybka has bugs, but only HOW MANY bugs (or crabs) she has. :)

Well, I think it's clear that using less than 64MB is not recommendable (at least for fast time controls/slow hardware, Dadi Jonsson's second test say that the effects of hash table sizes are small enough to not worry about them, but memory swapping should be hurtful.)

This is the only test that I'm aware of involving different hash sizes for Rybka 3. I don't think anyone has (or will) do such a test for correspondence time controls

on my machine 256 is the best
rybka find moves fastest on this ram dunno why but it is based on my own experience :]

all the best
