The 5th Livingston World Computer Chess960 Championship was held this past week in Mainz and Rybka won ahead of Shredder, Deep Sjeng and Ikarus.

A huge thanks to Hans-Walter Schmitt, Eric van Reem, Hans Secelle and the rest of the Chess Tigers staff for putting on a great event. They get everything right, from the big things down to the little things, and it's really fun to be there.

Another huge thanks to our team, especially to Lukas Cimiotti for help with testing and to Felix Kling for help with GUIs and for moral support. :)

Congrats also to Shredder for winning the blitz tournament.

Felix's report with pics and games can be found here: http://rybkachess.com/index.php?auswahl=Mainz+2009

There were a lot of interesting moments, here are two:

Rybka - Deep Sjeng, round 1 of prelim

2kn4/p2p4/P1p5/1p5r/1P1PQ3/2P5/K7/8 w - - 0 35

Of course, Rybka gives a high static score to this position and underestimates black's fortress possibilities. Fortunately, white can land the crushing blow, just in time: 35. d5 !! (putting a finger on black's weak a-pawn) Rxd5 36. Qe3 Kb8 37. Qf4+ Kc8 38. Kb2 Rd1 39. Qe3 Kb8 40. Qf3 Rd5 41. Qf4+ Kc8 42. Kc2! (taking away the d1 square), leaving black in zugzwang.

Shredder - Rybka, round 1 of final

r7/1p3b2/4p3/p1k1Pp1p/P1P3pP/1P6/1KB3P1/3R4 w - - 0 42

White has been in control for some time and aimed for this position, which at first glance looks quite good strategically. However, Rybka has already been giving 0.00 scores for three moves, realizing that the tables can be turned with a wild tactical variation: 42. Rd6 (42. g3 is met with 42. .. Rg8 with the same counterplay) f4! 43. Be4 f3 44. gxf3 g3 45. f4 Rg8 46. Bg2 Rg4 and in the complications black is not any worse.

Another nice moment from the third game against Shredder from the preliminaries:

r3k1nb/1bpp3p/1pn1pr2/5p2/2P3pq/1QNPP3/PP1N1PPP/B1R1R1KB b - -

Here Rybka had some score drop to 0.00 and was failing low, but Shredder played f4 - what Rybka saw was Nd4!!

If 1.exd Rh6 2.Nf1 g3! winning most probably.

Another position from the 7. round of the preliminaries (Rybka-Deep Sjeng):
brkqrbn1/1p1p1ppp/1Rp3n1/P3p3/4P3/5N2/P1PP1PPP/B1KQRB1N b Ebe -

If 1...Bc5 then Rybka planned to sacrifice the exchange+pawn with 2.Ng3! Bxb6 3.axb6 Qxb6 4.Nf5 Qc7 5.d4!

Hey Vas,
So when stephen saw that your rybka analysis said nd4 was winning for him did he take extra time to wait for shredder to see it? LOL
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2009-08-04 11:11
Shredder moved quickly there, I'm not sure if Stefan saw Nd4 during the game :)

Congrats on an unbelievable super performance! I doubt anyone expected such a margin. Did you?
It seems you're doing something (more likely a lot of things) VERY right hehe.

Well, Vas did some tests at home and this result was to be expected.

Ok, just kidding :-D Of course this was quite a good result, especially with those strong opponents on equal hardware.

What is "Rybka 4"?
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2009-08-03 12:55
It was Rybka 3s58 960 Deep that was competing :)

The other engines where Deep Shredder 11.47 Beta, Deep Sjeng 3.2 and Ikarus V0.44cmb1 SMP

who said Vas is creating just 1 version per month? :) And why should he stop with 3z58?
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2009-08-03 14:09
No reason, but this format only allows for 26 thousand builds. Are you sure this will be enough? :-)
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2009-08-03 14:16
" this format only allows for 26 thousand builds" Why? After 999 there comes 1000 and so on :)
Parent - - By Geomusic (*****) Date 2009-08-04 03:38
did this version include  rybka 4 src improvements or what will be  Rybka 3+ beta?
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2009-08-04 04:28

> Rybka 3+ beta

Rybka 3+ will have what it takes to dumb her down to Rybka 3 strength, so nothing could qualify as Rybka 3 beta (until we have a release candidate 2 weeks before release, or something.)

Btw., Vas also talked about you in Mainz, he will try to improve some things so that you can't beat the cluster anymore :)
Parent - - By Highendman (****) Date 2009-08-03 17:31
That's an honour. I look forward to a Cluster version that wipes the floor with me hehe.
