Zap isn't developed anymore? Why?
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2007-05-18 20:24
Hi Werewolf,

Here is your answer from Zappa web site:

[Quote: "As of the summer of 2006, I am retiring as an active computer chess programmer in order to concentrate on my PhD work. This means that if you are waiting for the next version of Zappa (Zap! Chess) you will be waiting for a very long time, and that I will no longer be playing in computer-computer tournaments, although I may still stop by CCC or ICC from time to time."]
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) Date 2007-05-18 21:56
nooooooooooooo

why do all these good programmers just stop, it's so annoying!
Parent - By RFK (Gold) Date 2007-05-18 22:15
Hi Werewolf,

I know, Ed Shroder did the same with "Pro Deo" et al (rebeluci). Drove me nuts.
Parent - - By Uri Blass (*****) Date 2007-05-18 22:16
I see no reason to believe him.
New zap was released in 2007 inspite of his words and Zap participates in tournaments inspite of his words.

Hi Uri,

I think you are right- I think after the fact he got juiced up again.
Parent - - By Roland Rösler (****) Date 2007-05-19 01:04
What have releasing to do with developing? Nothing!
Parent - By Uri Blass (*****) Date 2007-05-19 06:20
if you do not develop you cannot improve and he made a big improvement from the time he claimed that he stopped to develop.

After he released Zap he announced in Talkchess that he is retiring from chess because he can't make enough money in it, and that he's going to try programming for Go.

Why isn´t Zap (USA) developed. Why isn´t Fruit (France) developed? Why we see no new Shredder (it´s the time; Germany)? Why makes Hiarcs (GB) so much wind? Why comes the new good programs from Hungary (Rybka) or Russia (Strelka)? It´s because of globalisation, I believe. You have to pay the taxes and the lodge!
PS: When we see good (best?) chess engines from India, China or Armenia? They all have best brains and chess tradition!
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) Date 2007-05-19 10:34
this is a typical comment from you. Written in the world's worst english and...pointless.
Parent - - By Michael Waesch Date 2007-05-19 11:18
Oh well, just let me read your German then ...

I translated Roland's post into German and let Google Translator mutilate it back into English. Note the (mostly) improved word order.

Why isn't Zap (the USA) developed no more? Why isn't Fruit (France) developed no more? Why we do not see new Shredder (it is time; Germany)? Why does Hiarcs make so much wind? Why do the good new programs come from Hungary (Rybka) or Russia (Strelka)? Because of Globalisation, I believe. You must pay the taxes and for the house! HP: When will we see good machines from India, China or Armenia? They have all the best brains and chess tradition!

As for Werewolf's German (I made a couple of slight modifications to make it easier for Google):

Dieses ist eine typische Anmerkung von dir. Es wird auf schlechtestes englisch der Welt und... sinnlos geschrieben.
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) Date 2007-05-19 16:18
Vemple - that was funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the trouble is I think most germans won't get it....
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) Date 2007-05-19 16:24
Don't say negative things about Germans or... I will close the English Rybka website :)
Parent - By Kapaun (****) Date 2007-05-20 21:39
You mean because the translator had a better English than Roland? ;)
Parent - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2007-05-22 11:55
Why does Hiarcs make so much wind?

I can answer this - Hiarcs and I enjoy Indian food. Therefore we can get a bit windy.
Parent - By Roland Rösler (****) Date 2007-05-22 01:24
He Werewolf, we don´t have full moon. Howl at another place when it´s the time.

> Why isn´t Zap (USA) developed.

Ever heard of Google?

As of the summer of 2006, I am retiring as an active computer chess programmer in order to concentrate on my PhD work.

>Why isn´t Fruit (France) developed?

Unless the whole team has been lying all along, it IS being developed.

>Why we see no new Shredder (it´s the time; Germany)?

Learn to search:

we will release Shredder 11 this summer. Much will be improved,
including his endgame capabilities. We will also publish some
6 men Shredderbases, however we do not have a schedule for this yet.
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) Date 2007-05-20 21:31
well Mr.google since you like telling us how wonderful google is maybe you can tell us how you got that info!
seriously I typed in shredder 11 etc and got nothing back, even inserted your quote.

good info though - thanks.

seems a shame that they're targeting the endgame again with shredder, I've always felt that was its strong point. I would have liked to see it improve in the middlegame.

Hi Werewolf,

I received an email from Stefan and posted it somewhere. He said pretty much what Vempele is stating. Here he gives the approximate release time for Shredder 11

This is good. I remember about 18 months ago I exchanged a few emails with Chrilly Donninger and he said he thought stefan was a very talented programmer. With so many others giving up it's nice to hear shredder is still being developed!
Parent - - By RFK (Gold) Date 2007-05-21 13:23
Hi Werewolf,

I like Shredder's interface for what it offers. I think Stefan is more interested in presenting a kind of "family" all round GUI. It just doesn't go far enough for me at this point in my chess interests. I like using Shredder for playing games- but, ( and this may sound over the top) it is just not "professional" enough for me. That is why my focus is on Convekta. I hope that makes sense.
Parent - - By Carl Bicknell (*****) Date 2007-05-21 13:44
It does. I think a lot of people have high hopes for conveteka...just hope they deliver or we'll start getting crazy posts like "I'm going back to chessmaster" etc !

Hi werewolf,

Keep the faith, brother!!!

I didn't mention Google in that second link, did I? I meant to say it might be useful to search the other chess forums.

HIARCS is and always has been a great product.  I have used it for years and until Rybka came along, it was probably one of the best positional playing programs.  I think there is no need to sully a product which has given many a chess enthusiast many hours of fun.  Hiarcs, Zap, Junior, Fritz, Fruit, Shredder, Spike are all very important to chess engine development and they feed of each other.  Rybka has obviously pushed the bar very high at the moment, maybe a little too high ... but the other programs have improved dramatically as well.  With regards to Hiarcs, the only thing that has stopped me from purchasing it anymore is the incovenience of activation system.  I obviously understand why they have to do that ... but in my case I change computers so often that it would really be a headache.  Once they develop an activation scheme which is not too difficult I will definetely purchase it again.
Parent - By noctiferus (***) Date 2007-06-24 11:24
fully agreed.
I have rybka, shredder, fritz, junior, fruit.
would like to buy hiarcs too (it looks great): but I have my hands full of professional software that use this methodology (one of these costs 20000 euro), and that's a problem, if one changes configuration too often.
Please, Harvey,  try something else. I'd be among the firsts to buy it.
Parent - By Uri Blass (*****) Date 2007-06-25 11:14
They do not have to do it.
Doing it is their choice and I am not sure if this give them more customers.

Even Shredder 9 UCI has become a headache for me.  I have it on my 64x2 with 2 different operating systems (XP Pro and XP 64 bits).  Whenever I change boot up systems Shredder demands I give my name and the very long code again.  I don't see this as necessary.

Hi Jim,

This is a very old thread that seems to have been bounced for some reason. Ansari said that if the protection is changed for Hiarcs he would buy. The protection was changed with 11.2. Your Shredder problem sounds strange I dual boot some of my machines and have no issues with Shredder. I suggest you email Stefan who is always very quick to answer support emails.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

Have you got a Mac?
Can you give an impression about the strongest chess engine on Mac OS X?
Parent - By exigentsky (***) Date 2007-05-26 20:16
I just got a Mac this year and purchased HIARCS 11.1 MP along with Sigma Chess. I posted my impressions here: http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?tid=208
Parent - By Sesse (****) Date 2007-09-25 12:22
The strongest chess engine on Mac OS X is Rybka under microwine, I'd guess. :-)

Hello,

I bought Hiarcs 10 when it came out - I also purchased an older version of Fritz (7?) when I was in the USA (I think I paid $ 4 for it) and I bought a version of Rybka. From my limited experience I have to say that I always liked Hiarcs a lot. I never felt much of an affinity with Fritz. I like Rybka too, but I am still 'testing' it; sometimes it does things I do not understand.   So Hiarcs and Rybka would be my choices. Best, Jack, Ireland

Harvey should stick to resurrecting old versions instead of regurgitating unfounded allegations. Anybody with a sense of decency would not go posting alarmist threads without first looking for the truth.
Parent - - By Michael Waesch Date 2007-06-24 10:53
In the original thread it is quite clear that everyone considers it a hoax by someone who want to fool around people. It did not get any serious attention, but people like sensations, mud and dirt and when they don´t get it, they just create it themselves. One of the original answers only consisted of one German word: "Scherzkeks" (=someone who is prone and well known for fooling other around).

And with this one word the whole thing is answered in full detail. Just put the original poster into your mental filters for the future. The isn´t more to to or to think about.

In fact the original thread is here http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?tid=1482

posted by Ernst. If I had noticed this I would not have started another.

How many people in the Freestyle were using the supposedly hypermodern Hiarcs? Did Harvey play using that or he will give us another 3000 Euro excuse?
Parent - By nuff (**) Date 2007-09-25 11:22
Is it a coincidence that Harvey ignored the question or that there were none? Some things never change.
