It seems that even if white plays more or less randomly here, it suffices to draw.....
But i guess we would have to wait another 2 long days before they will play.... :-(
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2008-07-26 16:50
Monte Carlo here says 88% draw 12% win for black. We should try to take that 12% chance. Btw. in the starting position Monte Carlo sees a much lower chance for black ;)
So we are on the right way.
Parent - - By sarciness (***) [gb] Date 2008-07-26 18:34
Shocking! I thought black was winning in all lines...
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2008-07-26 19:01
In that case we'd have announced the distance to mate ;)
Parent - - By sarciness (***) [gb] Date 2008-07-26 19:05
It's 1597 moves, isn't it? With zugzwang forcing the loss of a pawn and the game by move 1526.
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-26 19:24
thankfully we have an arbiter to ensure fair play and enforce the 50 move rule.
Parent - - By sarciness (***) [gb] Date 2008-07-26 19:28
Shucks. Isn't it the 60-move rule now?
Parent - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-26 19:30
probably it is the which captain loses interest 1st and forgets to post rule.
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2008-07-26 19:31
But are we playing by all FIDE rules?  What if we find a 7-piece tablebase ending that wins? ;-)
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-26 19:32
ask Graham its up to him
Parent - - By George Tsavdaris (****) Date 2008-07-26 19:43
I think 50 move rule is to be followed here.

While i don't agree with the 50 move rule in some positions that are won for example in 70 moves without piece capture and Pawn move, the 50 move rule is as simple it can be and making complicated rules is not the best.....
Parent - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2008-07-26 19:52
I was thinking this with a slight complication that is easy to understand: "50-move rule unless at 50 moves one side can prove that it is a position that has been solved with tablebases to be a win, in which case that side must supply a long line of conditionals leading to the said win".  This means that it must be a case where the solution is known, which is very difficult to do with most of the 7-piece wins, as these are known, but not publicly available.

Of course, I very, very highly doubt that we are going to be dealing with a situation where this rule would be useful...
Parent - - By Graham Banks (****) [nz] Date 2008-07-26 20:19
As far as I'm aware, the 50 move rule is still the official FIDE stance.
I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.   ;-)
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2008-07-26 20:21
What we're wondering is whether the official FIDE stance should be applied to this game, or whether if one side can prove that it has a win in a certain number of moves that would require suspending the 50-move rule, they can be awarded the opportunity to show the win over the board.
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2008-07-26 20:22
I guess it doesn't really matter: I'm sure that if the match ended drawn but one side had a 7-piece tablebase win that they couldn't play due to the 50-move rule, history would remember that side as the "winner", even if not officially. :-)
Parent - - By George Tsavdaris (****) Date 2008-07-26 20:29
Actually the 50-move rule is a stupid rule for computer play when there are tablebases that can prove there is a forced win in more than 50 moves with no Pawn move and piece capture.
The 50-move rule philosophy is just to prevent long pointless games and also to protect some players from stubborn or unskilled players that try to win drawn endgames.

It's certainly a godsend in OTB play, that's for sure.   :-)

Perhaps although I've not seen too many GMs using that theory or too many modern chess books allude to it.   :-)

If the distance to mate is more than 100, I'll convince my teammates to offer a draw. My computer never announced a mate in more than 91 moves (that mate in 91 was KNNKP )
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2008-07-26 19:30
Well, as you know, it's not a dead position, and so some of us want to continue playing until it is clear to everyone.  In other words, we are trying to show the difference between real grandmasters and Kramnik. :-)
Parent - - By Mars (**) [de] Date 2008-07-26 20:27
...until it is clear to everyone.

Just wondering if it means that we're going to play until naked kings... ;-)

there is a lot of play left in this game, when Turbo said september,i think he was being over optimistic,as i have mentioned on the forum, some of us are looking at christmas,as we avoid the drawing lines.second game would then start Jan 1st
Parent - - By George Tsavdaris (****) Date 2008-07-26 21:07
I believe this game will end inside August 2008 or worst case until around September 20.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-26 21:11
good to hear george,i must have missed some of your winning AN.

Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:34

haha prey for 16 core nehalem!
Parent - - By Mars (**) [de] Date 2008-07-26 22:18
There is some play. The question is for how long since "avoiding drawing lines" might become difficult soon. :-)
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:21
the hamsters are taking a long time to respond to what they believe is a drawn game, maybe they are finding it not so drawn on reflection.
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-27 21:31
We chose our move yesterday but have decided to wait 47 hours to post it. sadly you will still hold the record of 47 hours 59 minutes for a move.
Parent - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:36
well you can try and beat it,make sure you press the right button though.

I hope you are joking..... :-)

I guess this has to do with the numerous "complains" you are hearing from us that you are too slow.... :-)
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-27 21:38
well yes and no we chose a move but are still analysing this and one other.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:43
we chose a move after 5 mins, then analyse it
Parent - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-27 21:45
Amazing your team are all here within 5 minutes of us posting a move that is indeed impressive.
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:40

Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-27 21:42
personally I think less is more I  would rather have a human input to the game.
Parent - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 21:45
we have, that is our luxury, amongst others we have 2 Russians playing without computers
Parent - - By NATIONAL12 (Gold) [gb] Date 2008-07-27 22:03

Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2008-07-27 22:19
