I think that more time to the GM(or less to Rybka) it´s interesting, I don´t like the idea of not allowing ponder.
I don´t like too Uri idea, take back moves.
But Uri have a good idea, a future correspondence match, I have liked the match that Steeve Ram
played against 3 engines.

$1000? Hehe hehe Top GMs demand appearance fees way above that. You will have to find proper sponsors such as those behind the Kramnik/Kasparov/Adams battles with Fritz/Deep Blue/Hydra. There is interest in chess and sponsors still shell out big bucks for chess, its a question of approaching the right people. Perhaps rybka can partner with Intel or AMD?
Actually, the current prize money is up to Six Thousand Dollars (from five sponsors) for a match victory. So far, Kamsky has declined, Ehlvest has not committed either way, and invitations were just sent out to Nakamura, Kaidanov, and Christiansen so far. I'm trying to get other email addresses of high-rated GMs. For this level of funding we won't get a 2700+ player, but a 2600+ GM is a realistic goal. If someone knows how to approach big companies for sponsorship, go ahead, I sure don't.
Kamsky declined eh? Figures. Christiansen?? I can't see a winning chance for him. Send a invitation to Kasparov and tell him to march his way over here to play Rybka.
If Kasparov agrees to play us, we can agree not to throw him in jail :)

Is it too much to send the same invitation to Bobby Fischer? Can we guarantee not throwing him to jail? :)
I have Bogdan Lalic's email address. He's about 2580
your sponsors? I thought you were paying...
I put up the first thousand dollars prize money (for a match victory), others have pledged an additional five thousand. Feel free to send a copy of this challenge to any GM.
Here's a fast blitz game between Rybka 2.2n2 quad and Nakamura for what it's worth:

Also some games between Rybka 2.2n2 and Teimour Radjabov, I thought Radja had some good chances at times, these super fast blitz games are light relief for them I think.

Wow! That's a lot of games. How many games did you play with Kamsky?
Too many blitz games against Radjabov.. 3+1, this control time is really difficult for a human, still for a TOP GM.
188 games against Kamsky (not all Rybka)
Your search found 188 games: [89 20 79 = (white win,draw,black win)]

Thanks for posting the games. Do you have any summary statistics (approximate will do) for the top players against Rybka in these blitz games since you upgraded your hardware? Also, in view of the overwhelming percentage scored by Rybka, perhaps you could provide the GMs with the option of playing at pawn and move handicap (the f7 pawn) -- I know ICC supports that as a type of "wild" Chess. Of course most would be too proud to accept, but perhaps some would be agreeable. There would be the problem of repeat games, since there is no opening book, but since the games would not be rated the GMs would have no motivation to do so. This would be quite helpful to us in terms of planning for future handicap matches.
BigMomma has probably the most well documented compiled games between Rybka and top GM's. Thanks for sharing them. As for wild chess ... I don't think either Kamsky or Rajdabov would be interested. But the original idea of using a 3 move opening book should dramatically improve the chances of the GM's since they seem to more than be able to handle themselves as it is... only to falter to some tactical shot which is difficult to see in fast time controls.
If there is some simple way to cut off the normal book after three moves, this version could be registered separately, perhaps as "littlemomma", and we could see how much of a difference in rating this makes (in ICC blitz). Of course, it would not be as strong as a version with a book specially written for the purpose.
Well Larry thanks for putting out such a challenge. Please let us know when the offer is taken.Maybe Gata would be interested.Yes I feel your confidence in Rybka.I don't believe anyone can be successful against Rybka in any kind of match play.Incidentally, what does VAS think of this challenge,"he may have posted something but i did not check all reply's"

We now have a total of Six Thousand Dollars pledged for anyone who can defeat Rybka under my terms, but very little guaranteed if the GM loses. We haven't yet publicized it on a wide scale, I'm waiting to hear back from Kamsky and Ehlvest first. I'm confident we can get a 2600 rated GM at least. I believe Vas shares my view that grandmasters cannot win without a pawn handicap, but he is not opposed to demonstrating that if a GM accepts this offer.
I wonder if the challange is for every GM(as long as no GM can beat rybka under your terms) or if there is a limit on the number of GM's.
I do not expect many GM's to accept the challange but you should be ready for the possibility that my estimate is wrong.

Six Thousand Dollars!? Ok, Just remember that you probably won't have a GM play against Rybka unless they have good chances. Rybka is actually easy to defeat due to it's weak tactics and poor undertanding of king attacks. Maybe you'll get a GM that knows where to exploit these weaknesses. Michael Adams would be the best player for Rybka, since he is the best positional chess player in the world. All he needs to do is understand her weaknesses and you can call it a night.
I don't think Adams is a good candidate for the Rybka match, he was slaughtered by Hydra 2 years ago. So I don't believe he would be all too confident in taking on the strongest PC program today, even with slight handicaps. As for the world's best positional player, did Adams ever defeat Kasparov under regular tournament time controls?
Hi,
It is very clear that Adams was not the best oponent to play against the machines. He doesn't have the appropriate style.
He is a very strong GM, but he doesn't have experience in this type of confrontations. He always plays 1.e4 and has a very aggressive style, and for that reason it was the chosen person to play.
The best positional players of the History, follow this line : J.R Capablanca, Smyslov, Petrossian, A.Karpov, Kramnik, and Kasparov that is all-terrain :-)
Regards,
Gambitto.

Yes, Capablanca is probably the best ever. But, that's debateable.
I sometimes wonder how Capablanca figured out his moves.
Yes, J.R Capablanca and Paul Morphy, they were the best and the most bigger natural Genius of all the times.
It is Still for me a delight to see Raúl's games, he had an extraordinary easiness to play chess. He was brilliant.

well, I don't like standing up like the "rybka fan" and all, but that's almost funny. let's be a little more rational.

This position occured in one of BigMomma's Blitz games against Radjabov.
Looks simular to the won game by Kamsky
I think this is Rybka's biggest weaknesses. Best to hope the GM who accepts the match doesn't create a position like this against Rybka.

No! Let's hope that he does!
In the win by Kamsky, the first capture didn't occur until move 29. Trying to keep everything on the board for as long as possible is probably a very good strategy for a GM against Rybka or any other engine.
As I use polyglot books on ICC a three move book would be trivial to create using the make-book function of polyglot with a -MAX-PLY argument of 6.
Sorry I didn't track statistics per engine and what h/w that engine was running on. This was more of a past time than a scientific experiment. You might find the work by Marc Lacrosse in this area useful he has an ICC GM v comps repository at http://users.skynet.be/mlcc/chessbazaar/gmvscompsicc2006.html
You cannot be sure which engine was loaded at the time though.
Handicap matches might be interesting but I'm not sure how many GMs would go for them. Why they play the comps is a mystery, but if it's to practice for real tournaments (and there is some - but not overwhelming - timing evidence to support this) then they probably will just want to play straight chess.

How about setting up the "Wild" option so that any challenge from a player rated 2400+ at pawn and move is accepted, and any challenge from a player rated 2000-2399 at knight odds is accepted (and mentioning this in the notes)? If no one takes up the challenge, nothing is lost. The games won't affect BigMomma's rating. The results should be very interesting.
Thanks Larry for organizing this, I'm looking forward. Thanks also to those who contributed to the prize fund.
We'll have to decide if we want to aim for a big score. If yes, then some work on contempt (in the extended sense) will be needed. This means things like avoiding trades in equal or worse positions, avoiding symmetrical pawn structures, keeping some (but not too many) pawns on the board, etc.
If we just aim for a match win, then the only item on the to-do list is an opening book that will minimize Rybka's chance of being caught in some prepared line.

I have to disagree with the above statement about Rybka being weak in positional play and tactics. She certainly is not lacking in those two and you can increase the contempt value and outlook to increase this.Adams is NOT a good candidate for this match.I think the only pone that can come close to giving Rybka a challenge is Kramnik and he was defeated by the silicon Monster Fritz.Anand comes to mind also but we will have to settle for at least a 2600 GM.With that much money in the pot I would like to play Rybka-hahah.Will the match be seen on Chess Assistant site, just looking ahead a bit as chess players do.I hope we get a good match and interesting one.Hey,how about giving Father a call.Rybka has to be set to a good contempt level anyway whomever she plays, the settings I imagine will be set to Anti-Human. I'm glad to see Her book will be set to a minimum as to give the GM a chance.Lets hope for a good one!
I prefer not to see Kramnik playing against rybka.
We do not need a player who cannot see mate in 1.
I prefer even to see GM adams against rybka and I do not think that adams is the best candidate.
The last GM who could beat machines in a match some years ago was GM Ilia Smirin so I prefer to see him playing.
Smirin's fide rating is 2650

It happen's Uri. Don't degrate Kramnik because of a 1-time occurance where he didn't see mate in 1. It happens, and it probably happened to you too.
Of course it happened to me when I was a weak player or when I played blitz but not in a serious game.
It is also not a single blunder by kramnik against computers and I remember that he lost a piece by 1 ply blunder in a previous match against Fritz and he also resigned in position when Fritz could not win against itself because of a fortress.
Kramnik did too many mistakes that even I expect myself not to do.

I cannot say never but I certainly expect that stupid blunders in serious games will not happen to me as often as they happened to kramnik against computers.

I remember almost forty years ago, when I was already rated maybe 2250 or so, I played a serious match for a prize with another master, and in the first game, in a clearly winning position with plenty of time, I overlooked a threatened mate in one, despite taking several minutes on the move. I still won the match by 2.5 to 1.5.
Yes, Indeed this Happen. All the world chess champions have made some big errors at some time. That is part of the human chess.

I can say that one of the reasons for my progress in chess from the time that I had rating near 1600 is that I tried to ask myself before every move what are the legal moves of me and my opponent.
I did it after finding that in significant number of games I did a mistake simply because of not considering some move of myself or not considering some move of my opponent.
Of course this strategy cannot help in blitz but it can help in serious games and I think that it is the main reason that I am relatively better at longer time control.

This might make sense for a low rated player, but would be poor strategy for masters or grandmasters (else they would do it). The reason is that let's say a grandmaster makes a one-move blunder (excluding time-pressure, when your idea can't be used anyway) every twenty games, roughly every thousand moves. Your idea would help about that often. But the time needed to consider every legal move, every turn, even very briefly, would surely hurt the quality of far more than one move in a thousand, and in some cases will cause just as serious blunders, only they will be two or three move blunders.
Note that the idea is not only productive for tactical blunders but also to avoid positional mistakes and part of the positional mistakes happen simply because of not considering an important move.
If GM's use average of 3 minutes per move(when they are not in time trouble) and if they use 30 seconds per move for looking very briefly at the legal moves of them and their opponet(note that it may be possible to do it during the opponent's move in big part of the cases if you predict the opponent move correctly) then I think that the idea may be productive even for them.

Actually, an American friend of mine (Sonny Kamberi, rated well over 2300) told me that he did this regularly. He'd scan the board for every legal response to his intended move. He could do it very quickly, and in fact he could also do various things like multiply huge numbers in his head very quickly.
I think this is one of the reasons why it's so hard to come up with "methods" for teaching how to play chess or other thinking activities like writing software. Every human has some really unique mental traits, and also some unique blind spots, and they will build their own personal approach around those traits and blind spots.

>We do not need a player who cannot see mate in 1.
Isn't that a rather naive metric of chess strength?
> I prefer even to see GM adams against rybka
GM Michael Adams also has missed a mate in one:
1r3b2/4k3/2p2R2/p1p1p3/P1PrN2P/3q4/1B4Q1/2K1R3 w - -
He played Bxd4 in this position and was promptly checkmated.
>GM Ilia Smirin so I prefer to see him playing
It seems that GM Smirin is not immune to chess blindness either:
r3rqk1/3b1p1p/p2p1npQ/nppPp1N1/4P1P1/1PP4P/P1BN1P2/R3R1K1 b - -
Smirin played 24...Qe7. I'll leave it to the reader to find a better move.
I think that all chess players who have played at the top level have made similar mistakes in their games. That includes the world champions. Even the world championship matches contain their share of tragic blunders.
I have no doubt that Larry Kaufman, being a strong player with a lot of experience, will pick the most interesting opponent out of the available options for this match. Of course the interest of strong players is influenced by the prize fund and fortunately the Rybka community has already added a sizable sum of money to Larry's personal contribution.
What games and what time control?
The problem is that kramnik did too many mistakes against computers when against humans he played clearly more games and at least did not blunder often.
The mate in 1 is only one of 3 blunders that kramnik made against Fritz that I expect myself not to do in games.
I can mention also resigning in position that fritz could draw against itself and giving a piece by one ply blunder.
Even if GM can make stupid blunders it may happen in 1 out of 100 games.
When it happens to kramnik in more than one out of 10 games against computers(and not against humans) then I do not like to see him playing against computers.

I understand that Uri, it is not very usual that a great player like Kramnik cannot see a mate in 1, or make other continuous errors in his games against the machines. This sometimes makes oneself to doubt, but it happens.
Yes, you are right. This is something strange, but if you remember, some months before his games against Fritz, Kramnik had health problems, and he made several serious errors in some of his games against GMs. Many things can affect a good player.
Yes, although a GM does not punish in the same way that the machines do it. You know well that the machine punishes the most minimum error with no mercy. This is practically always. This is psychological blow that I believe, it affects our game a lot. It affects our nerves :-)
Yes, than you expect.. But nobody, completely nobody can assure that he won't make them.
People have to remember an important thing: it is not the same thing to play in our house, in a calm way
without any pressures and knowing that if we lose there is not any problem, that to play under a very strong pressure before many millions of people that are following the game. That is already something very different. Still for these GM´s that are professional people, these situations are very difficult to manage.
At the moment I believe Kramnik is probably one of the best players to play against the machines. He has a very appropriate style and it is quite solid. But there are also many others that are sufficiently good. The bad thing, for us, for the public, is that most of them, only play for exorbitant quantities of money, and this is something very bad for the game.

The Smirin example looks like a bad game score. Otherwise, white would have voluntarily put his queen en-prise with his last move.
