I get angry letters from the power company because of all my commercial sized servers chewing away at chess positions.

They don't know you heat the house with chess during winter.

Seems more like a friendly warning, so you can prepare for the large electricity bill you can expect, or take measures if you have some unintended power leak. Good service, I think.

Next thing you can expect is a visit from the police, under the suspicion that you are growing mariuhana in your basement. Or perhaps to check whether your neighbor is growing mariuhana in his basement, stealing the required electricity from you.

Stealing electricity for illegal gardening is a popular offence here. A few years ago there was a case where some people suddenly had this terrible smell pervading their house, and making it uninhabitable. When they finally broke open the floor to get at the source they found a dead and decaying body under it! Turned out it was the remains of their neighbor, who had crawled into their foundation to tap their electricity for his pot-plant farm, and had been so clumsy at it that he had electrocuted himself in the process!

I am a journeyman electrician. I was employed by Manitoba Hydro for several years (now with AltaTrans, located in Alberta, Canada). Not sure about your utility provider, Dan, but Manitoba Hydro had (has) a contractual arrangement with utility companies in Minnesota where much of our surplus electricity was (is) sold to them at discounted rates.  The contract stipulated that a minimum volume had to be provided during non-emergency conditions.

So, we would regularly send out "we would like to help you. . . " correspondence, much like what you received, to non-corporate customers. Not so much to help "you" save money, but to help increase the volume for export and increase revenues for the company.

Perhaps that is their motive for constantly bugging you.

If the "efficient neighbors" are one person households, they use a lot more in your area than here in the Netherlands in the same month. My bill for september I get a sad smiley for using more than in the same month last year. I don't really know exactly why I used more, possibly accumulated dust in my computer already raises the bill. It is green electricirty but that does not mean I'm sure it is generated with renewable energy sources, I would have to switch my supplier to be sure it is from windmills etc. So I can't say I'm really green. But I'm not using very much electricity either, probably I could save a lot of this if I just shut down the computer more.

Did you think to buy solar panel if you are using electricity so much?

Major computer hardware retailers should be required to sell those also.
