I am ready to put together a high end chess system, or have it built for me. As of 10/2017, two of our top experts, Lukas and Dr. X, were endorsing a system built around the AMD RYZEN Threadripper 1950X 16-Core / 32 threads.

  If that is still your judgment, what other components would you guys recommend?

My suggestions:
Gigabyte X399 aorus gaming 7  (cost effective compared to Asus zenith xtreme)
32GB Gskill TridentZ / Corsair Vengence 32GB (lower the latency costlier it gets)
1TB Samsung EVO 960 NVMe
Graphics card (as per your requirement)
Corsair H115i AIO CPU cooler (OR custom water loop)
Fractal design R6 Case
Seasonic 850W Platinum PSU (or 1000W depends on your other config like GPU's etc.)

You are offering two alternative RAM ideas? 
Do you think that 64 GB of RAM would be overkill?
My current master system for chess on my LAN is built around 2X Intel Xeon-E5-2686-V3, giving me 2 X 18 =36 cores for main system.
  While this is a great setup for IDeA processing with potentially 56 cores on 5 systems on LAN, the Xeon-E5-2686-V3 @ 2.0 Ghz has been a big disappointment for infinite analysis.
  Sedat's site lists        45773 Kn/s  36   x64   2x Xeon E5-2696 v3     @2.80GHz    Yorkman
  and   21983 Kn/s    8   x64   Intel Core i7-5960X    @4.50GHz    Jean-Paul Vael

On his site, I don't see any Threadripper listings. Can you overclock your system? Where do you think it would stack up on Sedat's listing?

64GB is NOT a overkill if you are going to use it for correspondence chess but DDR4 is EXTREMELY costly (atleast for me).
Yes 2 alternatives based on your price/availability (Esp Gskill DDR4 is not readily available all the time)
SF benchmarks should be around 42M-45M nodes/sec if you overclock it to 4GHz (very easy to do)...

But make sure you note there are different settings as pertaining HT on/off on the same list, so you compare only ones of the same kind.

This is caused by Windows: when there are more than 64 logical cores available, Windows will form 2 processor groups (4 in case of >128 logical cores). When you bought you computer most engines couldn't handle this. Stockfish 9 and all asmFish versions can. So you should simply retry using SF 9 or even better asmFishW_2018-02-02_bmi2.

Threadripper is a bit tricky. To get reasonable performance you have to reach high memory speed. To achieve this you should choose single rank memory modules. And you should only populate one memory slot per channel. So you are limited to 32 GB. I recommend G.Skill Flare X black DIMM Kit 32GB, DDR4-3200, CL14-14-14-34 (F4-3200C14Q-32GFX). And I like this mobo: ASRock X399 Taichi (90-MXB5R0-A0UAYZ). But in a few months there will be a new and better Threadripper available.

ECC doesn't reduce performance. But there is no really fast ECC RAM available. 2666 MHz currently is the max. It's not a bad idea to use Threadripper with ECC RAM. But not all mobos support ECC - Asrock mobos do.

Soldered dies/heatspreaders would be nice, a less crippled -X-platform, a few more integer ALUs... :grin:

Thanks for the heads up on new Threadripper. I will wait and then check here for the best components with new Threadripper chip.
Re my 2 X Xeon Xeon-E5-2686-V3 @ 2.0 Ghz system for i.a.: I believe that I have never been able to configure the junky bios properly.
I am probably using only 18 (instead of 36 = 2 X18) physical cores in i.a.

I should not have bought a cheap mobo from Supermicro, SUPERMICRO MBD-X10DRI-O Extended ATX Server Motherboard Dual LGA 2011 R3 Intel C612. The bios offers a choice of hyperthreading ON or OFF but does not offer more than 18 cores as a parameter.
  Testing has shown that i.a. works best with HT OFF, asmFishW_2018-03-07_bmi2.exe with 35 threads (did not try 36 threads), 4 Gb of RAM.
