Anyone know what changes/additions there are?  I already have Houdini 6 so the upgrade would strictly be for Aquarium for me.
Parent - - By retep1 (***) Date 2017-12-04 19:47
look here:

Unfortunately I can not discover anything new in the GUI Aquarium 2018 - you will pay for - hopefully - a few bug-fixes and the 1-year access to 7-piece Lomonosov endgame tablebases and a 3rd month account for 3-month Chess King LEARN subscription .

I think I will wait and see.  I don't see anything at that link that says "buy me"... if you get my drift.

Aq 2017 is keeping me very happy and I don't use the 7-man tablebase.  So there is no sense of urgency.

Nothing from my "wish list" has been addressed... if it has, they should provide better information about new features.

Does it work under linux/wine?

I saw no material changes from Aquarium 2016 or Aqr 2017. Can any Aqr 2017 user tell me what is significantly better in 2017 version vs. 2016 version?
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-05 15:49
There was, I believe, some change to the "Custom Task" features... 2017 saw the introduction of the script there... I guess it might have been 2016, but I am pretty sure it was 2017.  Apart from that, 2017 was a major stability release, that's why I upgraded from 2016.  But because 2017 is very stable, I don't see any urgent need to upgrade at this time.

AQ 2018 says Version 11.0.0, Build 100.
Parent - - By chesspjn (**) Date 2017-12-05 21:56
Just used it for a few hours but in idea it is faster, the number of positions is more accurate, in 2017 the number could be something like 1178 for the best move, but when you looked at next move it could be 60k for the 2 best moves and perhaps 20k for the 3rd. Now it shows 140k for the best move. I hope this made any sense. Back to testing.

How does one install Aqr 2018 if one already has Aqr 2016 (or 2017) installed?
Parent - - By chesspjn (**) Date 2017-12-06 05:31
I kept my old installed and just installed it in a new folder. Copied my project I was working on, imported tree from the master and continued with it. I had no problems with it.
Parent - - By cma6 (****) Date 2017-12-06 17:30
Thanks for the advice. I will get Aqr 2018. So the process seems to be: 1) copy over the project files. 2) Copy over both Abases and
Atresse files to new folders.
Why not simply copy the tree files rather than import them?
Parent - By chesspjn (**) Date 2017-12-06 19:20
I wanted to start as quickly as I could, and didn't bother to try to find out which files I needed to copy. Import the tree was quickly done.
Parent - - By dickie (**) Date 2017-12-06 19:22
Copying and importing are both unnecessary. Simply edit the file aquarium.dir in the Aquarium 2018 folder to point to your pre-existing aquarium data directory. You can delete the new data directory in the Aquarium 2018 folder if you wish.
Parent - - By cghori (**) Date 2017-12-06 20:11
How do you edit the aquarium.dir file?
Parent - - By dickie (**) Date 2017-12-06 21:36
Open it with any text editor, notepad will do, and edit the line beginning DataDir= by removing the path to the newly installed aquarium data directory and replacing it with the path to the directory you have been previously using.

This is a great idea. It is not only much faster, but one won't run into the problems I have in the past from copying over many .aqt files many

I will end up buying it for the database alone.

$35 for the Hugebase update compared to $70 for Chessbase.

Last year I put together a combined database out of those 2 and the correspondence database that included only games where both players were ELO 2100+.
90% of the games in Chessbase and Hugebase are identical in that rating range, and I'm pretty sure the difference is even less at the GM level.

It was a huge pain to put it together because I had to use both Chess Assistant and Aquarium to make it work, and I created separate databases for selected rating ranges in order to be picky about which games I look at when there are lots of them in that position but have the option to include lower rated games when the tree gets sparse.
Chess assistant can remove duplicate games from a database but can't make AQT trees.

This year I'm just going to splice in the new games from Hugebase and the correspondence database since the tiny number of extra games I get from Chessbase won't really be worth the price.

Is there anyway to copy over your engines/settings from Aq17 to 18??
Parent - - By dickie (**) Date 2017-12-15 18:33
The file engines.xml in your Aquarium Data\Config directory holds all your engine settings. Just copy from 2017 and replace in 2018.
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-15 19:11
Any idea which xml has the control for the minimax buffer size?  I used to know, but my mind seems to have lost that bit, and I would like to make the minimax buffer larger.  I have looked on my own, but I can't seem to spot it.
Parent - - By dickie (**) Date 2017-12-16 07:45
Is this what you are looking for:

<TreeOptions tree_memory="100" maximum_tree_memory="500" minimum_tree_memory="8" tasks_before_minimax="5000"/>

In my setup this is line 12 of RPlayOptions.xml in the Config directory.
Parent - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-16 17:29
Hello dickie:

Yes!  That must be it.  I have researched after I read your post and I think this is it.

It seems that --> tree_memory="100" <-- is the key item.  It is apparantly set in megabytes, and some previously have said 1900 was the maximum.  I am not sure that is true any longer since that was a very old post here.  If I adjust it to 1000, which I read was recommended, I wonder if I should increase the maximum and minimums to fit the new setting.  For example, I wonder if this might be good:

<TreeOptions tree_memory="1000" maximum_tree_memory="1900" minimum_tree_memory="128" tasks_before_minimax="5000"/>

And I am not sure what to do with the "tasks_before_minimax"??  Should I just leave it alone??  Increase or decrease???

I think I will play around a little bit and see what I can do.

Thanks for the pointer!!
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-16 19:20
I will try more testing later.  I don't have much time at the moment.  But the initial testing was negative.  That is, I found no change in memory utilization by changing this to 500 or 1000.  Even during the minimax, no change.  I thought maybe it was a dynamic buffer, allocated and released as needed, but no change at all was observed.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone connected to the company that makes the programme could/would be available to help out with questions, rather than it being a case of members of the forum trying to help out each other.
I assume (haven't looked) the so-called manual is very much the same one that has been issued every update/year without any/little change?!
Parent - - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-17 02:06
Hi mist:

I do not know who is or is not a company rep, but Dadi used to be the most valuable resource.  He always seemed to know the correct answer.  But I believe that Dadi grew tired of it all.  And now he seldom appears in the forum.

Felix also seems quite knowledgeable.  But I have no idea his affiliation.  When he replies to queries though, he always seems to be spot on.
Parent - - By mist (**) Date 2017-12-17 11:01
Hello to you!

Yes I think that Felix 'may' have some connection with the product, but he does not seem to post etc.very often.  As for Dadi, yes he was very helpful and to be honest I was the person who upset him more than any other.

That being said it has only been the past two years that Aquarium has been working stable (more or less) which is something people who pay for something should have had right from the start, and I have used (tried) Aq from the very first. I am sure that a LOT of sell's have been lost over the years due to a un stable product/ no help/and poor customer care.  I think the icing on the cake that upset Dadi was when I said much the same thing and mentioned that this is the only piece of software I know where you are recommended not to use your anti-virus with?! He got all upset, and throw his toys out of his pram about it all!

But as I have said, Aq 17/18 has (so-far) been fine, I know that user's such as yourself require more help with all the workings of 'IDea' etc. but in the main it still seems 'us' are helping 'us'!!

I would like to know if there was really a little bit of bug fixing in AQ 2018 in comparison to AQ 2017 that I had bought.

Parent - - By mist (**) Date 2017-12-17 11:57 Edited 2017-12-17 12:01
I think there has been 'bug' fixing (more than anything else) done in Aq18.

I know that Aq is not that expensive, BUT, wouldn't it be nice to be given updates/bug fixes (as with Chessbase) from time to time without having to buy a new version every year?

Even something like a small discount if you are a returning customer would not go amiss
Parent - - By Radost (***) Date 2017-12-17 13:19
Okay, but: Do you have evidence for this (bugfix)?
Parent - - By mist (**) Date 2017-12-17 16:18
Frankly, no evidence of anything....however it does have next years date on the front and it is now Version 11.0.0. (build 100).  So we must have something new for our money........?
Parent - - By Radost (***) Date 2017-12-17 16:25
Yes, we should have. :-)

I own AQ2017 and I don´t need only an updated database, engine or so on (I have Houdini 6). Sometimes I lost my analysis because of heavy crash of the program. So I had to reinstall AQ :-(

So it would be cool if the developer fixed some bugs. The higher number of the build is not a sign of rework.
Parent - By mist (**) Date 2017-12-17 19:53

>I don´t need only an updated database

No, neither do I, make my own, and why they are still putting out C.C. 2012 database is a joke.

>I have Houdini 6

So do I

>  I lost my analysis because of heavy crash of the program

Lost count of the times that has happened over the years

Why did I buy the thing.??!!
Parent - By pawnslinger (****) Date 2017-12-18 04:28
I have lost my trees (important trees), so many times, that backup has become 2nd nature to me now.  I just expect it, and do full backups of the SSD that contain my trees.  Now, when a loss is incurred, I know it is limited.... to my last backup.  But I must admit, losses with AQ 2017 have been much much rarer.
Parent - - By SchackMatt (**) Date 2017-12-18 06:47
Have also had lot of losses of trees pre-AQ2017. Glad to say that I have not had any single loss with Aq2017.
Even if Windows update (Windows 10) at two occasions brutally closed down the system during night all active trees still were OK.
Aq2017 is very stable according to my experience in spite of some minor bugs.
Parent - By mist (**) Date 2017-12-18 10:09
It's a fact that Aq 17 has been the most stable version they have had...and not before time (maybe they have a new/different person working on it).   Still not found anything really new in Aq18 as yet....there must be something?!

I just support Rybka/Aquarium "for fun". However, I'm a beta tester for Aquarium, although the last version wasn't published in the beta test section, so there was no beta test in this forum.
I once did/redid the german translation for Aquarium and drew some symbols for it, but basically that's it.
So there is no conflict of interest to declare ;-) .

Dadi, however, really knows a lot and is closer related to ChessOK/Convekta, but I don't know any details.

Like Felix, I'm a beta tester. I bought my Aquarium 2018 like everyone else. I've helped a lot of users here on the forum, but that's because I enjoyed helping and it's also a good way to get a deeper understanding of Aquarium. I never got paid for the help I've given and I wouldn't accept money for that. Now, I just enjoy using Aquarium and use it every day in my correspondence chess. It's an amazing program!
Parent - By Radost (***) Date 2017-12-19 18:53
Hi Dadi,

I like AQ 2017 very much and use it for my correspondence chess too.

Do you know if AQ 2018 contains bugfixing or so?

Parent - - By braindied (**) Date 2017-12-19 08:03
The email from ChessOK offer of the week refers to "Buy any new H6Aq18 product, including Upgrade versions - and receive..."

But I cannot see any upgrade version to buy?? - or no discount for upgrading from a previous version of Aq??

Does an upgrade version or a discount exist?

Anyone help?

Parent - By SchackMatt (**) Date 2017-12-19 11:23
I bought H6 seperately some time ago and got an update-price. I think Houdini offered a better upgrade price for a couple of weeks. It could be this lower price ChessOK is refering to and just forgot to change the offer when no upgrade price for Houdini was available anymore.

I think you better email ChessOK asking what they intend. They give the emails: 'For questions about orders and delivery:,'.
