Is it possible to open an idea tree in chess assistant?

No. The older form of Aquarium tree was the same as the Chess Assistant format (hsh) but the newer format (aqt) cannot be used in Chess Assistant.

So now my question is if there is a utility to convert from AQT to HSH.  There is one to go from HSH to AQT but not the other way around as far as I can tell.

There isn't a utility but there may be a possible work around.

You could take the epd backup to the aqt tree and then use the Tree Utilities (Script|Run Script 9 Restore Idea Tree and there is an option for either an aqt or hsh format. I don't know if that works to create a hsh tree but worth a try (of course use a copy of the epd file to be safe). If it doesn't create a hsh file, there may be alternatives such as using the CA tree utilites.

Depends how you want to use the Idea tree in CA as well. If you want to use the aqt tree in CA for the engines, you can use the Aquarium Adapter in CA.

Update on Test: The Tree Utility in AQ 2017 cannot create a hsh tree so that work around doesn't work. I was able to create a hsh and import the epd file from the aqt file but will need to check the number of positions etc. to see that everything is there. Another suggestion would be to use the Tree Utilities from a previous version of AQ which had the hsh tree format (I can remember which version made the switch).

I think the tree format changed with AQ 2014.

I still had Aquarium 2012 on my computer and was able to use the Tree Utility to create a hsh tree with the epd backup for an aqt tree from Aquarium 2017. Yes - I see that AQ 2014 had the change in tree format away from the hsh format.

Although I have had Aquarium for a long time, it is only recently that I have taken the time to try and understand it as an analysis  tool.  Mainly this s because I use Chess Assistant so much and it can provide me a decent analysis.

However, I have tried something similar to your suggestion.

I took the workaround of 'emulating'  CA's background analysis. I took the epd results from IDEA and used those as input to BGA ( I wrote an " IDEA" script based on how the BGA script works).

Great result for me as I can carry out deep/guided analysis in Aquarium, but still use the results in CA !

I just wish that Convekta would put some work into CA. Although it is fairly stable, it does have a few bugs, and when it does go wrong, effectively you need to re-install to resolve. I have more backups of data and configuration than I know w hat to do with :)

Hoping a future update to CA comes that unifies the formats so we can access our IDEA trees when using the database

That would make much too much sense, so it will never happen!
