Another moderator and I came to the conclusion that we need more moderators, so if you visit our forum regulary and want to become a moderator, just leave a short message here or write a personal message to me.

i'm a fresh fish here, but i'm responsible.. i would like to volunteer also, but no hurt feelings if you find better fish in the sea ;)
I would like to ask all volunteers if Pictures of dead/cooked Fish offend them?
I would recommend any of these people to avoid the hotel in little town of Andenes, Norway (Norlandia Andrikken Hotel). As I recall, they had 53 types of fish for breakfast...

The tourism guide sez: The hotel is situated in the city centre of Andenes and offers one of Europe’s most exciting experiences – whale safari! We stake our reputation on offering the best of traditional recipes, and we can offer overnight accommodation in fishermen’s shacks at the nearby Lankanholmen.
The most exciting experience for me was that this was the smallest hotel room I had ever stayed in, probably less than 50 square feet. I was there for a week in July and there seemed to be an all night party outside the hotel every night for the duration of my stay.
I was working with an older gentleman there who remembered the Germans burning the town down during the war (probably accidentally). He also told me "I like whales", then realized this might be misinterpreted and clarified by adding "I like to eat whales". :-) He mentioned that they had a whale eating holiday but I don't remember at what time of year.

I am NOT interested in becoming one, anyway i have a request, make sure the forum stays as open and free as it is today with the next moderator too. I don't want any new rules restricting user's free speech. Thanks.

I PM'ed Felix offering to volunteer. I do not see my role to censor or delete pictures of dead or cooked fish. In general we want a high level of activity on the list and I am sure a funny picture of a fish - if somehow relevant in the context - will only help the list being active. Postings that are likely to make serious contributors less active would be removed if I was to become moderator. In general I prefer to keep intervention to a minimum, however my tolerance for postings that are clearly off topic is limited and I would prefer that such postings are moved to a special section for messages deemed unsuitable for general consumption.

Most of the "moderation" tasks is to split some topics once in a while, and move a thread here there between forums :)
I think that what we simply need is moderators to be active in moving off-topic posts to "The Flip Side"--this way, we can feel comfortable responding to such posts when they have a connection (however vague) to the original topic without feeling like we shouldn't keep the "off topic" conversation going, especially if it's potentially interesting.

I promise to not abuse them, and I will try my best to make The Rybka Forum a better place!
Don't worry, that was my main concern, so you can expect me to do it from now on (Branching off-topic posts to The Flip Side. But I think that the off-topic discussion should have a certain length, because I wouldn't like to create new threads on the Flip Side for just 3-4 off-topic posts.)

What about creating a new thread for suggestions to moderators?
There, for example, you could "report" a long off-topic discussion that needs to be branched to The Flip Side, or, like you suggest, branching threads that are too long and the indent is eating a ridiculously big part of the page (Along with reporting of personal attacks or swearing, etc.) Would that be desirable?

We have already the "report" button and the rybka forum&suggestions board, I think we should have not too much sections.
The Thread could be in forum&suggestions, something like "Suggest an action". (I would have never thought of branching the Bobby Fischer 1943-2008 thread without turbojuice's suggestion so I wonder if it would be good to have a special thread for that, or maybe we can just use this thread for that.)
Well, you may not know that, but there's the "report" button so that every user can suggest branching and the moderators will see a short message that there was a report. I guess that's already quite good.
Thanks, I didn't know that the report button could be used to request branching (I thought it was only used for reporting "bad posts".)
"Anything" that somebody think needs some attention other than the usual can be reported.

I am not aware of this issue, and i totally agree with you.
As there are several volunteers, will there be a public election or will he be chosen by Rybka team members.
i hope there is an election.. i already have a public campaign strategy and everything... i also raised $2 for my campaign already, most of which will go to advertising...

Just as long as it's not done via a secret ballot. Voting should be a trust, not a right! [See Chapter 10 of Mill's Considerations on Representative Government]. :)

In order to make this look more like a real election, one of the candidates (or his advisers) should put out a post giving additional unflattering information about each of his opponents. Nothing should be off limits!

Well, I was chosen in a monarchical way, so, as long as I don't abuse my powers I have nothing to fear. That means no tax records for you! ;)
As one of my firsts acts as moderator, i would change F.Kling's name, because of it's inherent negative connotation due to it's relation, however distant, to an unkind and, often, censored word
I will talk with another moderator about it and will come up with the result next week.
OK, I made my decision already today, the new moderator will be Soren Riis, he impressed us with his qualifications :) and was the most active of the candidates.
