One of the best ideas I have read since a long time.

The tournament has been announced.

Jeroen do you think that Cluster Rybka will play?
Parent - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-19 09:56
We'll have to ask Vas, Lukas and Jiri. Of course I really hope Rybka will play

All this needs is media coverage. How does the ICGA promote their basement tourney?
Parent - - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-19 10:13
I wouldn't try to simulate what the ICGA does to promote its tournament, because it would mean zero percent coverage ;-).

Best is to contact ChessVibes, ChessBase and TWIC amongst others, they have a large exposure to chess players.
Parent - By magnumpi (**) Date 2012-06-19 10:22
Exactly. I think Chessbase would be very interested. Rybka is sold also by Chessbase afterall.

> I wouldn't try to simulate what the ICGA does to promote its tournament

Well, if you go around the internet, you'll find people that don't know much about the rating lists and what's going on, and they believe Junior is the World Computer Chess Champion, etc.

The ICGA did something right to convince people their tournament was meaningful, the parts they did right you'd want to emulate.
Parent - - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-20 13:36
'Strongest computer chess event ever' and 'All top programs present' seems to do the trick quite easily.

Of course in writing articles for ChessVibes, TWIC and ChessBase you can mention that this tourney was way, way stronger than any WCCC event has ever been and had ten times more entries :-).

Shouldn't be too difficult.
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2012-06-20 13:57
Yes, someone still has to do it, though, otherwise the tourney will come and go and then it'll be "wouldn't it have been nice if those sites talked more about it?"

I hope someone is already contacting those people.

Of course the thread on CCC has exploded and turned into the usual mud slinging. I bet the ICGA crooks are furious :-).
Parent - - By Permanent Brain (*****) Date 2012-06-19 11:24
Yeah!

This reminds me of the FIDE/PCA split of WCh. we had in the past. We experienced that the "off federation" PCA champions were more respected than the FIDE champs. It seems computer chess will imitate the top human chess...

People want to see:

A) the strongest programs
B) the strongest hardware
C) the best books

This is a kind of Freestyle tournament, with the 'engine only' option. Skinner thinks that it is a useless tournament, well: let's see. He probably has no clue how popular Freestyle was, with 90% Rybka's and strong hardware
Parent - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2012-06-19 15:22
Well, what has happened is the issue is once again open for real discussion, and out of this perhaps a more plausible tournament plan can be put into place for discussion.

LOL. Not really understanding what is going on?

To quote Peter Skinner:

The whole point of the tournament is to prove how utterly useless it is, and what a waste of time it will be. Nothing more.
The reason the ICGA has good tournament rules (And I try to follow the same rules with the CCT) is because it weeds out the crap.
I'm out to prove that with 90 derivatives entering, it will become what everyone bitches about. A hardware/book war. Nothing more.

I'll at least give the guy an A for effort I don't see anyone else stepping up to do anything else.
Parent - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-19 13:27
It is HIS view that this tournament is utterly useless. If he gets 90 entries and the best programs are playing, with nice prize money to be taken: who cares? This tournament will catch more interest than all WCCC's combined, see the reactions of the people :-).

It is the WCCC that is utterly useless and a waste of time and money, as nobody is interested in it. This tourney is different

Good one! The ICGA weeds out the superior chess programs, while allowing inferior derivatives

This is NOT a Skinner quote, according to Miguel Ballicora.

So is this another one of Harvey's lies?

why bother with the quote -look to the concept!
Parent - - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-19 16:16
Let's not bother with that! I am looking forward to the most interesting computer chess event ever

Best Regards,
Sedat

From CCC: it appears HW has posted part of a private mail of Peter Skinner without his permission, leaving out some important bits.

Nice Pussy but you could do with a trim.

Is not me, is you :-P

Hiarcs not playing in CCT over Skinner's new tournament just seems so juvenile.

+1

Or,

This was one reason Mr. Skinner thought you were being sarcastic, because he was being sarcastic!
Parent - - By Jeroen (*****) [nl] Date 2012-06-19 16:14
No, it seems that Peter has never said the above and that he was wrongly quoted.

Now back to normal: this is going to be a very interesting tournament!

I see this as going from one extreme to another. I cannot fathom the rationale behind the concept.
