Up Topic The Rybka Lounge / WBCCC 2012 / 1 hour increment- any purpose?

I have been wondering about this matter. Why do we have a one hour increment? It seems to serve no purpose. 1 hour is not enough to save a player from timing out in this format. So what is the purpose?

True.

The idea was to have a time control as close as possible to first season, but without the drawbacks of dead zone.

For WBCCC 2011 a time control of 30 0 was agreed, however, by mistake a 1 hour dead-zone was introduced. This allowed players to manage their time so that they had one hour increment, by not opening XfccPlay, but instead waiting for the opponent's move on the forum, so they could get one hour more per move (the hour was added before they looked at the move, instead of after like in increment, but the effect on the clock is the same).

The one hour increment was introduced so players could get their extra hour without having to do the juggling of XfccPlay and forum checking, and that all players would get the extra hour regardless of how often they checked their games on the server.

However, I agree it's not necessary and WBCCC 2013 could do without it.

However, some players (like Barnard) claim that one hour increment is enough to avoid losing on time (they put an alarm clock that wakes them up when their opponent move, and they have enough time to move and accumulate another hour and keep going for an indefinite amount of time.)

Actually, if the hour is just there to allow such crazy maneuvers to avoid losing on time, there's no need for a 1 hour increment the whole game, the one hour increment can start when a player has 5 days on the clock or less, or something like that.

It might. I happen to like it. After 24 moves, we would have gained a whole day.

i like the one hour increment;it can be very useful in conditionals, and also allows to players that want play very quickly to avoid lossing on time, even if his opponent try to flag them, and the other player has 1 remaining day, simply because when you receive your opponent move, you have an hour to make yours, and that avoid you lossing on time if you play enough quickly and make impossible that your opponent flag you if you take the good measures with that 1 hour increment

appart from that, each 24 moves you have one whole extra day

edit:you can save your game and avoid lossing on time,in for example dead draws,if you select receive emails in real time in your phone, and when your opponent makes a move, you give him a fast answer...with that idea, even if my opponent has 25 remaining days and me only 2 days,i can asure you that my opponent wont be able to flag me

My opinion, everyone knows I like fast time controls, but I actually favor the one hour increment. It is not much at all, but it is enough to save a game that has legitimately reached time trouble. Plus it makes up for any transmission lags, bugs etc.

I do have quite a bit to say regarding this and similar issues, but will wait until the final game is finished.
