I just seen some users on playchess.com using toga 1.4 and achieving 2700s elo and seeing some games where they draw or sometime beaten rybka. I can't even achieve rating 2700s using rybka 2.3.2a, I somewhat regret purchasing an engine where there is a free one and open source that can match it. Is it really worth it to buy future rybka updates? Or engines like toga will get so strong that it can match a commercial engine?
There is no danger.
Even if you use single processor and 32 bits then Rybka is still better than toga.
From the ccrl list:
Rybka 2.3.2a 32-bit 3024 +19 −18 72.1% −150.1 34.3% 1073
Toga II 1.4 beta5c 4CPU 2993 +22 −22 54.2% −28.7 38.6% 695
comparison on hardware that supports only 32 bits single processor
Rybka 2.3.2a 32-bit 3024 +19 −18 72.1% −150.1 34.3% 1073
Toga II 1.4 beta5 2921 +23 −22 58.7% −59.6 37.7% 640
Comparison on faster hardware
Rybka 2.3.2a 64-bit 4CPU 3139 +10 −10 68.9% −135.6 43.6% 3390
Toga II 1.4 beta5c 4CPU 2993 +22 −22 54.2% −28.7 38.6% 695
I guess that you have old hardware or your opponent have a better book otherwise I cannot understand why you cannot get better rating than toga.
Note that nobody can promise you that there is not going to be free engine that is better than the commercial engines.

don't really think my hardware, i use dual core OC at 3.8Ghz and HS masterbook.ctg. I just get 2550s - 2630s. still get beaten by a free toga....

Well, have you tried using Toga instead? Perhaps then you will get even worse results.
It depends on why you purchase chess engines.
If your sole intent is to dork out, build fast hardware and make good books to play vs. other engines on playchess.com, then Rybka truly is the top dog.
If your intent is to have your chess engine(s) be your analysis partners, then Rybka should definitely be one of the engines on your PC.
If your intent is to play games against chess engines, then there are lots of free engines out there that would give even grandmasters a run for their money.
I'm anxious to see Rybka 3, not because of the engine so much, but because of the GUI. Vas knows what engine v. engine freaks and serious chess players want. There have been many discussions as to which features will be in the new GUI. I can hardly wait to see the final list and to (hopefully) give it a try myself.

I want Rybka 3 for the GUI too but also for the engine for analysis. There have been a couple of situations where Rybka has been unable to find sacs in my games that Junior, for example, can find. I'm hoping Rybka 3 will have superior King attack ability.
Hello, is there any time period when Rybka 3 is going to be released? I thought is was going to be quicker than this! I would purchase just the engine and book. I don't need GUI. Thanks
I am really a big computer chess fan, but now my concern is that "engine vs. engine freaks" dominate the discussions and have too much influence. What happens in Playchess' engine room is totally unimportant and the ratings there are worthless. People are wasting their talents, time & energy there. Whatever matters there, should NEVER guide decisions for a serious computer chess product.
The Playchess engine room is a nutshell in a nutshell's nutshell: Chess --> computer chess --> online engine competition. A few hundred people are simmering in their own soup.
And btw., what about computer chess on ICC or FICS? Why is that never mentioned here?

Not if they're having fun. If we came to earth to have fun, then they're using their time the best they can.
From this viewpoint, you are of course right and I agree entirely.
Going to high-end "gentlemen's clubs" with a free pass from the wife would be time better spent.
You always have to be careful about this, but in computer chess I think that it works out quite well. The vocal computer chess guys are I think close to representative of the chess players out there who use engines to analyze but would never actually make any requests, etc.

Those ratings on Playchess are generally achieved by using Rybka and then temporarily switching to whatever other engine they want to use just for fun.
correct... if you have a lower rating lets say around 2400 or less you will not be noticed by a 2650 and above elo..
