Westmere-ES or Westmere-EP?
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [gb] Date 2012-04-13 09:11
whats the difference ?
Parent - By Vempele (Silver) [fi] Date 2012-04-13 09:27
X5675 is Westmere-EP, ES could be a typo or it could stand for "engineering sample".
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-13 10:03
Selling engineering samples is illegal, so if it's really ES, it would be a bad deal.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [gb] Date 2012-04-13 10:10
I see, thanks.

By the way, do you know where I could find the best deal for Xeons X5650 ?

Since the lowest price seems to be at 600 GBP => 600*1.4559 = 873 CHF ( doubt I can find such a good exchange rate....) I have to add Swiss VAT at 8% => minimum 943 CHF

Here is the best deal I could find in Switzerland :
http://www.powerch.com/Komponenten.13/Prozessoren.339/Intel.294/BX80614X5650/XEON+X5650+2.66GHZ+6.40GT%25252FS.127956.html

960 CHF.

i offered you a better deal and you turned me down strange now you are looking to pay more than i offered you.

i would take this deal nothing wrong with es cpus

Well I am looking.

What was really unfortunate is that my computer brokedown at easter.....   :-(
Your deal was good.

@ lukas cimiotti

if selling ES is illegal, does it mean also that the cpu is bad?
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-13 14:20
No, the CPUs are probably good, but you can't take that for granted. And you've got no warranty.
Parent - By mocha1961 (***) [us] Date 2012-04-13 14:29
does it mean that the ES dont last long?
Parent - By mocha1961 (***) [us] Date 2012-04-13 14:05
@lukas cimiotti

his posting clearly shows ES

I wouldn't buy any of this. Not because it's a bad computer, but because of possible legal problems.
And: thanks for finding this
Parent - - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2012-04-13 18:36
I'm surprised that eBay is allowing these sales to take place.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-13 19:11
Maybe Intel provided its ok to sell ES chips to some employees ?
Parent - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2012-04-13 20:13
You can contact Intel and I'm sure they will let you know what where they stand with these chips.
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-14 07:07
If you report it to ebay, they'll stop it. If you report it to Intel, they'll prosecute the dealer.

Parent - By mocha1961 (***) [us] Date 2012-04-14 14:07
i guess you're right lukas, the guy stopped posting that ES. thx
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-13 19:16
Hey Lukas, quick question, can we fit just 1 CPU on the SR2 board and add later the 2nd CPU ?
Parent - By Rubén Cómes (****) [ar] Date 2012-04-14 00:19
Sí, se puede.
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-14 07:07
Yes, no problem - if you use identical CPUs.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-14 07:44
Thanks,

Just to make it sure I understand it correctly, you can run 1 CPU on the SR2 board and let the 2nd CPU slot empty right ?
One can also OC the 1 CPU correct ?

Thanks again for your help.

Since my computer is broken, I am considering buying the SR2 board and temporarely 1 CPU (x5650 or e5645 if it performs as well when OC)

regards
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-14 12:06
Yes. But if you want to only use one CPU it's much cheaper to take a Core i7-970 and a reasonable single so. 1366 mainboard.

p.s. the SR2 is huge, it only fits in very few cases.
Parent - - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-04-14 14:13
Xigmatek Elysium is cheap fits sr-2 with np has plenty of room for a water setup a good case..........
Parent - By mocha1961 (***) [us] Date 2012-04-14 14:29
yes. huge case
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-14 22:08
Well, the idea was to do in in steps, since I am having lately quite a few invoices.....
Also my case is an Cosmos 2 so I believe there should be no issue to hold the SR2 board.

I was also wondering if we can expect to see this Year a price decrease of the x5650 ?

Now also to consider is that if intel releases an i7 with 10 cores this Year, buying an SR2 with Xeons doesn't make much sense.

The SR2 does not fit into your Cosmos II case.

?? where does it point to ?

The CoolerMaster Cosmos 2 has been release early 2012 and it mentions everywhere I have seen that it fits an SR2 board !?
Parent - - By Labyrinth (****) [us] Date 2012-04-15 11:38
I think you've got Lukas on that one. I didn't read through that forum thread, perhaps it was mentioned (it's many pages long).
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-15 11:57
well, it is likely that Lukas in writting a quick answer mixed up with an other case.

Errare Humanum est
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-15 13:48
Well, it doesn't officially support HPTX.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-15 13:50
What do you mean by that ?
Parent - - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-04-15 13:55
You should ask David Evans what he had to do to make it fit in his case.
With "not officially supported" I mean things like misplaced motherboard stands.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-15 16:53
Isnt this about a Cosmos S ?

The box I have is a Cosmos 2 which I believe is biger ?!

Parent - - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-04-15 17:14
ahh sorry cosmos 2 fits the sr-2 with ease
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-15 17:21
Thanks :-)

I believe so, this case is so huge that if it doesn't fit in that, then I wonder in what it would fit.

Maybe you can help me on the 2 following things before I spend thousand of bucks :
* Would an Xeon e5645 OC on an SR2 board do as well as an X5650 ?
* Can we expect i7 10 cores within 1 Year ?! I believe Xeon yes, but was wondering about the "normal" range CPU "i7" or should we call it maybe "i9"

10 cores will be xeon..

5645 has lower multi i would expect 3.8 hard push 4ghz.

gran the 5650 for the extra multi and go for it...gl
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-04-15 21:19 Edited 2012-04-15 21:36
Hi,

Well, the thing is that here in Switzerland I found the e5645 for about 550 CHF and the x5650 is for about 980 CHF.

So its nearly 2x the price for what 200 MHz more ?

EDIT: does TDP has any influence for chess engines ?
Parent - - By kgburcham (***) [us] Date 2012-04-15 23:27 Edited 2012-04-15 23:29
EDIT: does TDP has any influence for chess engines ?

this is a value that is related to heat generated by the cpu.
The higher the value the more cooling needed.
Thermal Design Power of a 3960x is 130W
Thermal Design Power of a 2687w is 150W
Just means match the cooler to the heat generated at 100% load.
Compare hardware to get a better understanding.
Usually the more kns needs more switching, more switching needs more transistors, more transistors need more cooling, more cooling needs more money, etc.
kgburcham

The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is the average maximum power a processor can dissipate while running commercially available software. TDP is primarily used as a guideline for manufacturers of thermal solutions (heatsinks/fans, etc) which tells them how much heat their solution should dissipate. TDP is not the maximum power the CPU may generate - there may be periods of time when the CPU dissipates more power than designed, in which case either the CPU temperature will rise closer to the maximum, or special CPU circuitry will activate and add idle cycles or reduce CPU frequency with the intent of reducing the amount of generated power.

Thanks for your answer.

And does QPI has an influence ?
