Hi Mark, pleasure to play you, have a great game!!!
White's first move saved me from making a grave error, because on 1.e4, I had planned on playing 1...d5.
Maybe I will play that in a future round, but I do not know. I will choose something slightly more solid now.

Hi Matt,
Have a great game yourself. Nothing wrong with 1.e4 d5

I agree, but given correct play, I think White gets more of the fun!
Edit: I was referring, too, to the reputation of the Scandinavian defense, at least as I know it, as not being quite as stout relative to some variations in Ruy or Sicilian or the Caro-Kann.

interesting position...good luck to both players
I've worked out the positions very deeply previously, and have played this position many times before, quite successfully, I will add, but I hope you're right. Good luck to you too, interesting game with deka!
Same here, i am looking for a good positional end game.
Hi Mark
we started the round a few hours ago,and you are looking for an endgame?wow, you analized so deeply

This position is quite common to the King's Indian player. The moves I have played thus far are for sure Black's best because I have analyzed the endgame quite extensively, and the text line was advocated by Fischer. My favorite variations to punish are the exchange variations of the king's indian. I beat my first master OTB from the current game position.
Gallagher's opinion, and his analysis on openings is especially excellent, by the way, and cited by many: "Practitioners of the Exchange Variation can be divided into three categories. Firstly, there are the endgame lovers who play this system with the intention of grinding you down in a long boring endgame. These people deserve some respect, although our main feeling towards them should be one of sympathy for having such a feeble system against the King's Indian. The second category are the psychologists. These are the tricky characters who select this variation because they feel that it is the most unpleasant for you to play against, especially if you are noted as a tactical player. The third, and in my experience by far the most numerous category are wimps. They select this variation with the idea of killing the game and achieving an easy draw. On no account should they be given one until every last possibility has been exhausted. Perhaps they will achieve their objective, if they play extremely well, but they should at least be made to suffer. As you can imagine, I don't think too highly of this variation." (Gallagher, How to Beat the Anti-King's Indians [I highly recommend it!! + chesspub + I believe this excerpt was cited in Bologan's or Golubev's book (which one? maybe both, IDK
, too from what I am told!)
I would place Mark in the first category of course, he plays excellent chess, and I recall that he played the Black side of the Berlin very well! I find Gallagher's comment to rather amusing as well as appropriate, hence it's reproduction here.

me one of them

p.s. meaning that i love playing long endgames
Sorry Matt for playing a grinding you down long boring endgame that was not my intention. I do have subscription with chesspub but don't use it much.
No problem. In fact Gallagher's game in the text line is in there.
I got a subscription to chesspub late last year because I had almost no published chess literature, and at 2100 level, at which my rating still resides unfortunately (beating higher rated players and losing to lower rated players more frequently of late), I thought it a good idea to better understand opening theory, although I have to admit my positions out of the openings last year in this tournament were rather promising, except in two of my losses, against Sebi and ralunger.

Not really this is all know theory not even switched on the engines or consulted books this is straight out of my memory.
i forgot about your memory
well,in al cases you have a beautyfull endgame to play, and since you are in our team...go and win Mark!

I never play for a draw sometimes i loose more because of that
i also never play for a draw...because i love win
That's good for me since this position is better for Black.
I look forward to your win then

I think it's probably going to be a pretty dead draw I'm afraid, although I will be careful in how I go about it...
You could well be right. I did not set our for a draw i never do.
I'm right, I've analyzed and played this all before.
I may have the slightest of chances to play for a win objectively, but I don't believe it. For future reference, I think KID practitioners find the other exchange variation, after 7...Nc6 to be slightly more annoying, see Ponomariov- Nakamura, from their St. Louis match, 2011 or 2010. But that position is almost just as unpromising as this one is.

This was in Dortmund. I tried this line a couple of times OTB (mainly due to being too lazy to learn a proper line) and can assure you that white has nothing there.
Thanks for the correction (maybe you were there?
) . I thought it was St Louis (so I will check), but you're probably right [edit: yes, Kappatoo is correct], I think they had played each other shortly before their match in St. Louis. I recall that Krush - Melekhina is the other game I have in that line in my db, and that game was shortly and boringly drawn (in St. Louis in 2009 as I DID know
).
I was so looking forward to seeing a 9.Ne1 Taimanov.
This and the 7.Be3 line are the most testing IMO --- so it seems to me; Radjabov's and Bologan's play, although sufficient, after 7.Be3 Ng4 (Na6!?) (cd meh, Karpov-Kasparov...) isn't exactly the most inspiring. I was surprised by Mark's last; I was planning to play Be6 on 0-0-0 although Ne6 is also fine.

No, I wasn't there in the last few years.
What about the Bayonet? Well, in any case, if you know a promising line against the King's Indian, please let me know. :)

I know for sure Black is doing completely fine there, if anything I think Black has improvements...
The Taimanov is the way to play but Black can get his fun.
Edit: 7.Be3 is underestimated practically, if you're lazy... worth checking out, the endings tend to favor White, so I expect it become more popular.

You know for sure that black is completely fine in the Bayonet?? Now you're bragging. :)
The main lines liquidate pretty quickly to a draw if Black likes.
OTB against 12.f3 main I would mess it up at the moment.
Edit: And in the Panno, (Pg3), Black has to find a lot of precise moves and White has more options (as you well know).

Sorry, I don't buy it. Sure, it is not easy to find something for white. But after 12.f3 Kh8 (or do you have something else in mind?), white can choose among at least seven (!) sensible lines. It's hard to believe that you have worked all of them out to a draw. Or maybe I greatly underestimate how much time you have put into the King's Indian.
Yeah. I don't like the Panno, not my style. I am also not sure that white has something if black decides to play a Grünfeld against g3.

Yeah I tend to like playing into Queen pawn opening ideas via playing them though the English or Reti move orders.
There are a lot of move order tricks.
