Rybka 5 will be released later today.  It will be sold both by Chessbase and by Convekta, as well as directly here at the Rybka Forum.  This is a stand-alone UCI engine, meaning that it will not be sold with Aquarium, as Houdini is currently Convekta’s primary engine.

Some items of note:
**The overall improvement is such that Rybka 5, according to our testing, is now 85 points stronger than Houdini 2.
**The search has been improved, and Rybka is now most likely the fastest-searching engine among the top engines.
**The calculation of nodes per second (NPS) has been changed to the conventional counting method used by most other chess engines.
**The calculation of the depth has also been changed to the conventional scheme used by most other chess engines.
**The bugs involved in the occasional incorrect calculation of the score in the past have been solved: this feature has now been removed from the program.  Most users will not find this a problem, though, as they are generally interested in the strongest move that the engine can play, not its score
**Rybka is now able to play Gothic Chess.  This chess variant will be the primary focus of development for future Rybka versions.

Well done and congratulations.
Not April fools though, right?  Gothic chess???

Thanks.  The timing of the release is unfortunate, but we're trying to roll this out quickly so that the users have the early opportunity to find any new bugs that have crept into the program.

A few other notes:

**Rybka 5 now only uses 5-man endgame tablebases.  In our testing, particularly in rook endgames, Rybka 5 performed noticeably better when using only the 345 Nalimov tablebases.
**The blind bishop endgame bugs are still in the program.  I am working closely with Robert Hyatt to solve this problem, and we hope to release an update later this spring.  We are hopeful that with some ingenuity, we might be able to make Rybka 5 even stronger than Crafty in these endgames.
**In terms of Gothic Chess, while Gothic Chess is supported, most GUIs (including Aquarium and the Fritz GUIs) don't support this chess variant, so you will need to download a GUI that supports this.
**Rybka 5 is greatly improved in the openings phase of the game.  It is able to vary its opening moves in the engine analysis itself, based on the results of past games and the tuning of the parameters based on how the rest of the games went.  As such, Rybka 5 no longer needs an opening book, and thus no longer supports one.

Goddamn you, you probably left out bishop underpromotion again!!
Parent - - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2012-04-01 14:22
Sorry, but we didn't get to this.  Perhaps we will be able to get to this in Rybka 6.  I was able to find a solution to this long ago, but it had the unfortunate side-effect of always promoting to bishop, which is probably not what most users had in mind.

I was hoping you would seek a license agreement to replace Crafty in Winboard.

WWWHHHAATTT!?!?! We have waiting for like 10 years and I still don't have this feature!

Does this mean that Rybka 5 won't have an OFficial opening book.. or does Not Support mean = that rybka 5 Will not allow you to load your own .CTG books period? If so the case, I understand alot of people here use rybka 5 for other purposes than I, I mostly use for  Engine Games vs. Engine Matches ..If the other Opponent uses Rybka 5 as well, Wouldn't both Users play same lines more often rather than traditionally as we all use custom opening books. I understand Rybka 5 will vary its openings as described, but if you have 30 players using same Engine in a Play room wouldnt same lines be played over and over almost identical games where basically would come down to who has strongest PC..?

Just asking a question, Would love to buy this Product nomatter the answer, But I feel it should atleast allow user option of adding or using his/her own opening book if need be.

Rybka 5 will not have an official opening book.  In addition, Rybka 5 overrides the GUI and does not allow the GUI to play the opening.  Tests showed that in general, modern programs play weaker moves when they allow the GUI to use an opening book, and this is particularly the case with Rybka 5.  The only programs tested that played stronger openings by using an opening book were Crafty and Hiarcs.

We all know I have a cloud version opening book and it comes free if you rent cluster time.

Does Rybka 5 include copy/paste of line codes solving under promotion of the new Crafty that will be released with Apple Fruit Juce 3  next week ?

Obviously an April Fool joke. No program can possibly be 85 ELO points better than Houdini 2.0 c:roll:

Best of all: It's bugfree by definition, so we didn't have to do any beta testing. In case someone finds some strange behavior that's not a bug but a feature  (we learned this from Microsoft)
Parent - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2012-04-01 15:29
Does it play Action Digital Frisbee? Or, will I need another core upgrade?
Parent - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2012-04-01 17:09
Don Dailey was just curious if perhaps Richard V may have beta tested Rybka 5, and, well, if so- do you have his email address?

Its about time you have completed me. I mean people have been waiting forever to see me surpass Houdini for a long time now.

RYBKA 5 on a single core is 85 ELO points stronger than HOUDINI 2.c running on 12 cores.
Parent - By turbojuice1122 (Gold) [us] Date 2012-04-01 21:24
Rybka 5 as sold currently actually will not work on computers with only one processing core.  We are working on this, and a special 1-CPU version will hopefully be released next month at a higher price for those who want to buy it.  We didn't see much need in developing this version, though, as hardly anyone will use it.

Well, in the eastern U.S., April 2 is now upon us, so I guess it's time for the fun to end, and for me to revert to my normal screen name.  It might be a good idea to move this to the Flip Side now, though I'm attaching a screenshot so that people who got in on this late can see how things looked with me pretending to be Vas for a day.

Happy April Fools Day!
